Forget the turkey, our symbol of Thanksgiving should be the Holy Eucharist!
In this weekend's editorial, we trace the true meaning of Thanksgiving and it dates well before the pilgrims, all the way back to the Last Supper! We also ask why we can't celebrate the advent of the new millennium by spending the evening with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Surely there are enough out there to watch one hour with Him. Getting to the heart of why we give thanks
In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto takes a respite from her continuing story of "Kathy's Rosary Story" to focus on the blessings of Thanksgiving. She reminds us that we should be grateful to God for whatever He has chosen to bestow on us. No matter our lot in life, gratitude begets gratitude and we should express that gratitude whether it is in suffering for Him to merit graces for ourselves and others, or missions He has charged us with. Sister shows how this gratitude is synonymous with happiness - happiness of the heart For her column this weekend, A happy heart is a grateful heart, click on GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

If we are thankful, we have no need of pride. Let us give thanks for the Lord's Blessings
In his column today, Pat Ludwa questions all the rhetoric of "pride" that permeates our culture and masquerades the fact that if we are proud, then we are left to our own miserable selves. But if we are humble, and credit all that we have and are to God, then we are truly giving back to our Creator all that He has given us and we gain so much more. As Pat wisely puts it, "If we have pride, we have no reason to be thankful. If we are thankful,
we have no need of pride." For Pat's column Pride or Thanksgiving?, click on VIEW FROM THE PEW

SIMPLY SHEEN: Who wants to be a millionaire when you can have it all through the vow of poverty?
They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminarydid so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"The second way of preserving ourselves from an unseemly greed is the heroic way...the way of complete detachment from wealth, as practiced by St. Francis of Assisi and all those who take the vows of poverty. There is a paradox in such a renunciation, for the man who has given up even the hope of 'security' is the richest man in the world; he is the most secure of all of us, for he wants nothing...and that is a boast no millionaire can make."
