This coming Sunday is Father’s Day! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all the
Dad’s out there! Hope you are treated with great love and appreciation!
My dad died in 1981 so I don’t have an “earthly” father to celebrate
with anymore. But I do remember him constantly with great love and appreciation. My dad brought me into this world ... literally. I was born in April of 1940 and in those days, doctors used to come to homes to deliver babies. Though I was not premature, the doctor did not get there in time, and my dad delivered me. That was April Fool’s Day, and I’ve always said that when I was born, I fooled my dad.
I always felt very loved by my father. I am very aware that many
people don’t have a happy recollection of their Dads. That must be quite painful, for a father’s love,
presence and attention helps bring great security to a child as he or she grows.
This is the Year dedicated to God the Father. It would be most
appropriate to remember Our Eternal Father with special love and attention this weekend.
I think God, the Father, is the “forgotten” Person of the Trinity.
Yes, we do mention Him when we make the Sign of the Cross, pray the Doxology and end many prayers, i.e.,
“we ask you this, Father, in the Name of Your Son, Jesus,...”
But I must be honest. When I pray, I usually pray directly to Jesus,
to the Holy Spirit, Our Blessed Mother, and frequently, St. Anne. It isn’t that I don’t love God,
the Father, I just don’t pray to Him directly as much as I should, I think.
I am well aware that we cannot separate the Persons of the Trinity.
To honor the Holy Spirit and Jesus is certainly to honor God, the Father.
A few years ago, I was struck with the realization that there is no
church (that I know of) that is named after God, the Father. Have you ever heard of a church or chapel named
something like “The Church of God the Father” or “The Church of the Eternal Father.”
I think this needs to be changed. As a matter of fact, I announce
right now, that if I am ever to be responsible for the dedication of any convent chapel, I can assure you, it
will be dedicated to the Glory of the Eternal Father.
This weekend, let’s constantly praise the Eternal Father, remember
Him specially, call on Him lovingly. He is Our Father. Spiritual things are more real than material
things. So God, the Father, is more Our Father than our earthly fathers are. He would appreciate it very
much if we came to know and love Him better in this life. After all, if we can make it to our ultimate goal - Heaven, we shall be spending eternity with Him, the most loving of all Fathers.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, DEAR GOD, THE FATHER! I wish Your children did
not offend You so much ... or at all. Bring us back to being children with whom You are
pleased. Help us to know You better so that You will not be a stranger to us when we enter into Your
Kingdom. Amen.
