In fact, his feast day corresponds with the day he first arrived in San Diego in 1769. He established the site of the mission on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16 of the same year. PRAYER & DEVOTION
Today we honor the First Martyrs of Rome with the Preface of today's last Mass for June:
Father, You sanctified the Church of Rome with the blood of its martyrs. May we find strength from their courage and rejoice in their triumph.
Events Today in Church History
On this date last year His Holiness Pope John Paul II issued his Apostolic Letter Ad tuendam fidem aimed at dissident theologians mostly in higher education at Catholic institutions who have strayed from the true teaching of the Church in regards dogma and policy such as their stubbornness in pushing for women priests despite Rome's orders that there will be no discussion. This Apostolic Letter gave the Holy See teeth to carry out discipline against those who stray. They have been duly warned. SIMPLY SHEEN: Wisdom is gained by suffering
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"Pius XII, just a short time before he died, told someone whom I know very well, 'You have suffered a great deal and it has been difficult.' The speaker said to him, 'But I would not be without it, for it has drawn me closer to God.' Pius XII answered, 'That is right. We get learning from books, but we get wisdom from suffering.'"
"Do not look for love everlasting on earth, for it does not exist. I alone provide all, and I solemnly tell you that the Hour of the Triumph of My Mother's Immaculate Heart draws very near."
Those words come from Our Lord on His solemn birthday on Christmas Day in 1994 in which Jesus imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart in Message #578 that He and His Blessed Mother Mary, whom He has sent as a sign of His Divine Mercy, have said all they can. Christ reaffirms that not since He walked the earth in Galillee have there been so many signs and wonders, yet Our Lord laments that so few realize this or acknowledge the miracles and respond to what He asks so that His Mother's Immaculate Heart can triumph as He has promised. He asks, in His Message five days earlier on December 20th, to be obedient to His Holy Church and His Vicar on earth and asks then as well on Christmas Day to come humbly before Him and kneel at the manger offering ourselves as our present to Him. Leader of Armenian Church succumbs to throat cancer
Catholicos Karekin I, leader of the Armenian Church which had signed a reconciliation agreement last fall that effectively paves the way for reuniting the Armenian Church with Rome, died Tuesday in Yerevan. The Holy Father had wanted to visit him before his inevitable death but his own health in Poland precluded any possibilities. It could be a good omen that he died on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul for Armenians can associate that day with the day celebrated in the Western Church as a Papal Feast. Disney video being used in South America by Planned Parenthood in promoting the Culture of Death through family favorite vehicle Donald Duck
The wholesome, family value reputation built by Walt Disney is corroding under Michael Eisner as word comes that Planned Parenthood has recirculated an atrocious, blatant contraception Disney animation promotion in Spanish in South America using Donald Duck to do the dirty work that demeans all that is sacred for the meaning of life. It was actually made in 1968 and shown for twenty years until it was pulled. Disney has denied involvement and asked for it to be shelved but the fact Disney made the video speaks volumes. After fifteen months the murder of Auxiliary Bishop Juan Gerardi Conedera of Guatamala still remains a mystery and Church officials, human rights advocates and now a former judge want answers now! Up until now the government and military have been staging a cover-up framing another priest with no evidence while everything points to a conspiracy by the military to silence the Bishop after he had exposed the government for various violations and atrocities.
