This weekend we commemorate the Feast of the TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD on Friday and the Feast of Pope Saint Sixtus II and his martyred companions as well as Saint Cajetan, priest and religious founder plus the Observance of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday before Sunday's Feast of Saint Dominic which is superseded by the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In honor of the Feast of Saint Dominic we present a special prayer from My Daily Prayer:
O God, Who hast vouchsafed to make Thy Church illustrious by the merits and teachings of Blessed Dominic, Thy Confessor, grant through his intercession, that she may not be deprived of temporal help, and continually may advance in spiritual growth. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

Air Force turns into "Air Farce" with ridiculous ruling against married Catholic officer
A controversy is brewing that could undermine Catholics' rights both in the military and civilian life. The latest is the ruling by the United States Air Force that they will not accommodate the moral needs of a married Catholic Air Force Lieutenant who has objected to the immorality of sleeping in the same quarters with an unmarried woman. For whom do the bells toll? Filipinos want their "liberty bell" back!
As if the US Military doesn't already have enough PR problems, it has been revealed that there is a bitter controversy over the "Bells of Balangiga" in the Philippines between the U.S. Army and the Catholic Church in the Philippines. The latter claims the soldiers stole the Church property when they took the bells as a memorial of their victory over the Filipinos over a century ago when they quelled an uprising that resulted in the slaughter of 50,000 Filipinos. The Filipino Bishops have appealed to the NCCB for help in convincing the Army and Congress to return the bells to their rightful place in Balangiga. For more, click on Bell, book and the Army.
Two Colombian nuns acquitted in shooting of intruder
It took a week, but finally the two Colombian nuns arrested for gunning down an intruder in the dark were acquitted of any crime, the court ruling that the shooting was done in self-defense. The history of their convent has shown many breakins and the nuns recently began carrying a gun for self-defense and to protect the valuable religious treasures in their chapel. Finally there will be a source all Catholics can turn to regarding upcoming elections where the Catholic Alliance will provide issues and voting records according to how they stack up with Catholic doctrine and teachings so no one will consciously vote for a culture of death candidate or someone who is not in accord with the ideals and values of Catholics. The voters chose that crooner of crooners who lived his faith in the face of Hollywood's barrage of temptations. We're speaking of Bing Crosby, the popular star of film, tv and the recording business whose songs will forever be etched in our memories as the melodies hauntingly remind us, especially at Christmas. He was part of the wholesome Hollywood group that stayed faithful to the faith and their marriage vows and will always be Father Chuck O'Malley to millions. A thrill ride in St. Louis: Inside the hierarchy of the game with a Padre and a Cardinal
In this weekend's editorial, we rejoice with sure future Hall of Famers Tony Gywnn, who has been a Padre his entire professional career, and Mark McGwire who continues to shatter the baseball and major league records. Thursday night in St. Louis was a special moment when the world experienced a double shot of excitement. Though Gywnn fell one hit shy of reaching the 3000 hit mark, McGwire slammed his 500th and 501st career homerun. In a perfect world had both those feats been attained the two would have gained instant immortal status among the baseball gods. Their lives off the field have also garnered plenty of plaudits not only from fans but from God above Who had to be smiling on the happy events that occurred on the eve of the Transfiguration when a city and the baseball world was transfigured into the mecca of baseball immortality. Our eighty-fourth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order is Cardinal Dino Monduzzi , the retired Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal Household. For nearly fourty years he was a member of the inner sanctum of the Pope, overseeing the private papal palace and chapel during the pontificates of four Popes. For his loyal service he was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II at the most recent Consistory of February 21, 1998. On Friday we commemorate the death 778 years ago of the founder of the Order of Preachers Saint Dominic whose feast is superseded Sunday for Ordinary Time. To him Our Lady gave the Holy Rosary to strengthen him and his followers against the heresies rampant in his time and which would become the ultimate weapon for all after him, especially in our day and age.
