On this date 997 years ago Bruno Egisheim was born in Lorraine. He would go on to become the 152nd successor of Peter as Pope Saint Leo IX who would become known as the Pontiff who excommunicated the Eastern Patriarch Michael Cerularius in 1054 prompting the thousand year schism between East and West. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

 We continue with this new series that debuted the beginning of the year, bringing you on a regular basis three times a week the Princes of the Church. Our sixty-eighth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order is Cardinal Jose Ali Lebrun Moratinos, the Archbishop emeritus of Caracas, Venezuela who turned 80 on March 19th. Abbreviated Summer issues begin today for next few months |
As has been the tradition of the DAILY CATHOLIC each summer - from the last two weeks of June through the end of August, we traditionally pare back our original features. Thus, beginning with today's issue, the summer issue format is in effect. This means there will be only one VIEW FROM THE PEW by Pat Ludwa a week - on Thursdays, and one CATHOLIC PewPOINT each Friday. Sister Mary Lucy Astuto's weekly column GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER on Fridays will continue as well as our COLLEGE OF CARDINALS COLLECTION three times a week and the usual Monday feature VICAR OF CHRIST SPEAKS. However, as for features, we are going to recycle those from earlier editions so that newer readers over the last two years can have the opportunity to read what they may have missed. Just as the networks run re-runs, we are running reruns of earlier successful articles. However, we will have a very special new feature beginning in July when we begin our COUNTDOWN OF THE TOP 100 CATHOLICS OF THE CENTURY. We will suspend for the summer the SITE OF THE DAY and CATHOLIC CANVAS and focus more on the news features of the day to emphasize the daily, up-to-date strengths of the DAILY CATHOLIC. As always, we welcome your feedback and what you, the reader, wants to see in this publication that is fast approaching four million visits since we went on line daily on All Saints Day of 1997.

Suffer the children to come to God along the Path to Communion
Following up a year after the Bishops of North, Central and South America, along with the Caribbean contingent, met for the month-long Synod of the Americas in Rome at the end of 1997, Pope John Paul II officially closed the Synod with his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America at Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico City in January 1999. Because of its significance for all Americans, we bring you this important document in several installments over the next few months. Those powerful words from Our Lord were imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart on the feast of Saint Martin of Tours on November 11, 1994 in which Jesus reinforces the magnitude of His Mercy and alerts His children of the sorrows that are to come, offering us the shelter of grace to best cope with what lies ahead. He follows this up two days later reiterating the importance of remaining loyal to His Holy Church and Vicar on earth and again beseeching His little ones to pray for Divine Mercy that the chastisements be mitigated and more find salvation despite the evil one's treachery and trickery. Britain's Cardinal Hume, 76, loses battle with Cancer
 
It was inevitable and Cardinal George Basil Hume was prepared, having announced a few weeks ago that the cancer he suffered was taking its toll quickly, but still there is great sadness when the event finally comes and all of Great Britain, the Church and the Pope are mourning today with the passing of England's Archbishop of Westminster who was known as a great pioneer of ecumenism whom Pope Paul VI consecrated a cardinal in the Consistory of May 24, 1976. He had been Archbishop of Westminster since the Feast of the Annunciation in 1976. He died on the one year anniversary of another of his colleagues in the Conclave Cardinal John Carberry of St. Louis who was also appointed by Paul VI. Cardinal Hume was born in Newcastle-on-the-Tyne on March 2, 1923 in the Hexham Diocese of England. He came from a mixed marriage with his mother being French Catholic and his father a strict Anglican and well-known heart surgeon. He was ordained a Benedictine priest on July 23, 1950. After teaching for several years, he was appointed in 1963 Abbot of the Abbey where he studied as a seminarian. He held this post until being named Archbishop of Westminster on February 9, 1976, the first such honor for anyone from a monastic order to such a high position. Holy Father expected to reign in German bishops over abortion issue with strong letter
  The German bishops and people are waiting for the shoe to fall for word has leaked that the Holy Father is about to release a very stern letter that is sure to go against the grain of a lot of Germans and could very well include some bishops in a test of loyalty to the Holy See over the abortion issue which deals with the system now in which the bishops inadvertantly are participating in a program which promotes abortions. To offset this, the Pope, in no uncertain terms, is firing off a strongly worded letter to the episcopate which spells out what they are to do. For more, click on Showdown in Germany.
 US House passes bill to reinstate the Ten Commandments in public schools and buildings
 Thou shalt reinstate the Ten Commandments in American Schools. No that's not a commandment, but it could be a law if the Senate agrees with an amendment passed by the House late last week that Republicans claim will help America turn the corner and begin the comeback road toward morality, while the Democrats' tired refrain is that by legally posting the Laws of God it will promote hate crimes. Colombian rebels not helping their own cause by delaying release of all the hostages
 
If the Cuban-backed Colombian National Liberation Army wants the excommunication lifted they had better comply with the Church's wishes that they release all the hostages taken. That is the directive from Cali's Archbishop Isaias Duarte

Dear children! Also today I call you to convert and to more firmly believe in God. Children, you seek peace and pray in different ways, but you have not yet given your hearts to God for Him to fill them with His love. So, I am with you to teach you and to bring you closer to the love of God. If you love God above all else, it will be easy for you to pray and to open your hearts to Him.
