TOP CATHOLIC OF THE CENTURY NUMBER:

Evelyn Waugh: British satirist who took his faith seriously
Evelyn Waugh    Today we bring you the 97th person selected out of the TOP 100 CATHOLICS OF THE CENTURY. The voters selected Evelyn Waugh, the renowned British novelist and leading satirist who converted to Catholicism at the age of 27 and from that time on defended the faith in his writings, subtlely instilling the values of Holy Mother Church into his leading characters and tweaking the conscience of both England and America in respect to what is worthwhile and what wasn't through his vast literary contributions. • Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, S.J. - photo from Inside the VaticanCardinal Carlo Maria Martini, S.J., Archbishop of Milan, casts an envious eye toward the Vatican as the favorite of the modernists
Our eightieth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order is 72 year-old Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, S.J., the Archbishop of Milan who has been in that post for 19 years. It is no secret Cardinal Martini is the "poster boy" for the liberal faction of cardinals and clergy who are openly pushing his candidacy to succeed Pope John Paul II, who they are insidiously trying to push out by spreading false rumors about the Holy Father's health. But Martini's age is working against him as the Holy Father outlasts this latest threat by the modernists. Martini is a brilliant intellectual and considered by many to be a people person. "But I solemnly tell you: All Scripture shall be fulfilled, and all that has been foretold to you shall come to pass. But it shall not happen as you conceive, but it shall all be fulfilled as a thief coming in the night." Sacred and Merciful Heart of Jesus
Those words from Our Lord were imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart on April 6, 1995 in which He emphasizes that His patience is growing thin with the hardened hearts and lukewarm souls who continue to do what they please without heeding the Divine Will. He rues the fact so many look for signs and wonders but refuse to look within and examine their own souls. He assures all nothing will change for all that has been foretold will occur. He prefaces these strong words with equally strong words in His Message four days earlier in which He reminds us of His Apostles and their weak human natures but through their faith they were transformed and He wants to do the same for us. Famous quotes of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen An open and shut case!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

"Nothing is more interesting in our social scene than to see how often those who boast of an 'open mind' end with a closed one."

      HEADLINES:
Apostolic Nuncio in Israel begins making preparations for Papal Visit in 2000
Despite the obstacle of a lasting peace accord between the Palestinians and Israelis, the Apostolic Nuncio in Israel Archbishop Pietro Sambi expressed hope that the problems will be solved so the Holy Father can trace the footsteps of Christ and the Apostles in the Holy Land next spring. He pointed out ecumenical advances by the Jewish and Moslem representatives to help clear the way and encouraged Catholics on pilgrimage to Jerusalem to meet with the Catholics there to get to know them better and offer moral support since the Christian population is so sparse in the Holy Land. For more, click on Preparing for the Jubilee in the Holy Land .

Cardinal Ratzinger points out that there has been too much emphasis on the "people of God" concept and not enough on the "Christological Mystery"
Cardinal Ratzinger     In a recently published book "Dilexit Ecclesiam," the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger laments the fact that the "spirit of Vatican II" has mislead many into diminishing the true role of the Church where the whole concept "people of God" has been reduced to a sociological concept rather than theological. For more, click on Cardinal Ratzinger's comments.

Pope John XXIII's beatification imminent, possibly on Feast of Pope Saint Gregory the Great in 2000
All that is lacking in officially setting a date for the beatification of Pope John XXIII is Pope John Paul II's approval of the documented miracles attributed to the late Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncali. The Holy See hints that the date for his beatification could very well be September 3, 2000. For more, click on Pope John XXIII.

Italian Catholic expert on the Crusades decries misconceptions of the term "crusades" in separating fact from fiction
Claiming the term "crusades" was concocted by anti-Catholics, Vittorio Messori, an Italian Catholic writer and expert on Church history contends that bad publicity against the Church contributed to the public's negative concept of the Crusades. He blames the Enlightenment movement after the Reformation for spewing lies and poisoning the peoples' minds against the Church, playing down the "pilgrimage" part of the theater and emphasizing the greed of Christians in securing trade routes. In addition, he points out, in recent times there has been an unreal sympathy for the Moslems that is unwarrented since they turned a Christian stronghold into an Islam empire, slaughtering countless thousands of Christians and pillaging and plundering many churches and monasteries. July 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message
The Gospa's message for June    Dear children! Also today I rejoice with you and I call you all to prayer with the heart. I call all of you, little children, to give thanks to God here with me for the graces which He gives to you through me. I desire for you to comprehend that I want to realize here, not only a place of prayer but also a meeting of hearts. I desire for my, Jesus' and your heart to become one heart of love and peace. That is why, little children, pray and rejoice over everything that God does here, despite that satan provokes quarrels and unrest. I am with you and I lead you all on the way of love. Thank you for having responded to my call.
