Message to the Americas:The New World was forged by evangelization commissioned by Christ Following up a year after the Bishops of North, Central and South America, along with the Caribbean contingent, met for the month-long Synod of the Americas in Rome at the end of 1997, Pope John Paul II officially closed the Synod with his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America at Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico City in January 1999. Those words from Our Lady were imparted to the Hidden Flower of the Immaculate Heart on February 16, 1995 in which the Blessed Mother calls for all to prayer and sacrifice in order to prepare properly during Lent as well as to expedite the Triumph of her Immaculate Heart. She calls for all to return to her Divine Son Jesus Who prefaces His Mother's words four days earlier in Message #591 by calling His children to return all reverence to Him. Silence is golden! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

Holy Father gaining second wind as he winds down summer vacation  
As the Pope counts the days until he returns this Wednesday from his summer hiatus in northwestern Italy, many have observed that he is looking healthier and happier and has shown more spring in his step during visits to the Alps and a Carmelite monastery on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.   The Congregation for the Clergy Prefect Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos released a letter to all priests of the world entitled "Teachers of the Word, Ministers of the Sacraments and Guides of the Community" intended for the new millennium and calling all ordained men to return to the values and roots of their priesthood.  The release of the first volume of a German "Martyrologium" reveals that 300 Germans were martyred for their faith and in fighting Hitler's evil regime. Proof is provided that both clergy and laity fought to help German Jews just as Pope Pius XII did for so many Jewish people in Germany, Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania and Russia. The UN is up to their old tricks and be forewarned it is satanic in purpose for they are out to snuff out life and values by openly intensifying efforts to promulgate contraception and push for abortions worldwide. They're going about it by demeaning the values and morals promoted by the Church and trying to "re-educate" women that their role of wives and mothers is demeaning and conning women, especially third world females, into thinking they need to assert themselves more and demand their rights. The UN is going so far as to openly criticize the Church's teaching and other faiths for their "antiquated, outmoded views." For more, click on UN smear

Cardinal Roger Mahony, long a crusader for the Hispanic cause, is no stranger to controversy as Archbishop of Los Angeles 
Our seventy-sixth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order is Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, the Archbishop of the sprawling Archdiocese of Los Angeles. As one of the youngest cardinals he is held up as the hope of the liberal establishment in the Church. 
Born in Hollywood, he became a Diocesan priest in Fresno on May 1, 1962 and Archbishop of Los Angeles on September 5, 1985. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John Paul II in the Consistory of June 28, 1991. For more on Cardinal Mahony, click on
