Mary is the gate to her Divine Son's Heart. Mary is not divine, she is not God. But God desires us to honor her because she is His Mother. The Rosary is a beautiful bouquet of spiritual roses we can offer her for her intercession before the Blessed Trinity. With that kind of link, how can we go wrong?

Sister Mary Lucy Astuto     In her column this week, we bring you another gem from the archived columns of Sister Mary Lucy Astuto. Today we provide an article that proved popular in how we can explain to non-Catholics how we view and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Just as we honor and obey our own mother on earth and defend her always, we honor and obey our Heavenly Mother and defend her. All devotion to Our Lady stems from what God asks of us in honoring and venerating the Daughter of the Father, Mother of the Son, and Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Through the Rosary we offer bouquets of spiritual roses to her which, she in turn presents to the Holy Trinity and God conveys to us, through her, the graces and blessings - truly fulfilling her God-given role as Advocate, Co-Redemptrix, and Mediatrix of all grace. For her column, entitled Be not afraid! see GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

FIRST FRIDAY - Devotions to the Sacred Heart

Most Holy Heart of Jesus, shower Your blessings abundantly upon Your holy Church, upon the Supreme Pontiff, and upon all the clergy and religious. Grant perseverance to the just, convert sinners, and enlighten unbelievers. Bless our relatives, friends, and benefactors. Assist the dying, deliver the holy souls in Purgatory, and extend over all hearts the gentle empire of Your love. To You, most merciful Heart of Jesus, we commend all these souls, and in their behalf we offer to You all Your merits in union with the merits of Your most Blessed Mother and of all the Angels and Saints, together with all the Masses, Communions, prayers, and good works which are being offered this day throughout Christendom.

    The DAILY WORD
Taken from the Gospel for Friday's Mass

"He who hears you, hears Me; and he who rejects you, rejects Me; and he who rejects Me, rejects Him Who sent Me."

    Luke 10: 16

Events that happened Today in Church History

Pope first to visit White House    Today is the 21st anniversary of Pope John Paul II's first visit to the United States as the Sovereign Pontiff and the first Pope to ever visit the White House. He met with then president Jimmy Carter in the capitol of the world's most powerful nation. There he set the tone by emphasizing human dignity for all which Carter, a Christian, agreed with fully. It was not the first time this great Polish Pope had set foot on American soil for he had visited a few times as Cardinal Karol Wojtyla and showed a great love for the American people. He has since visited several more times, each time reinforcing the theme of human dignity and the culture of life. Yet over this past decade that has fallen on deaf ears in that once proud and honored edifice that houses the leader of our nation. It now is nothing more than a house of ill repute in many ways, due to the immoral ethics of this current administration and party. Famous quotes of Bishop Fulton J. SheenA liberal is one who has lost sight of the shore

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

" Self-will always repudiates a truth which challenges it. However successful self-will may be, it is never satisfied; that is why the egotist is always critical. The 'head that wears the crown is uneasy,' not because he is tired of the crown, but because he is tired of himself. He has it within his power to do anything he pleases, and this living without boundaries and limitations becomes as dull and stagnant as a swamp. A river must be happier than a swamp because it has banks and boundaries; a swamp is a valley of liberty that lost its shores and became 'liberal.' "
