Indian Religious leaders speak out on behalf of Papal Visit, encourage people to give him a rousing welcome

Reacting to growing sentiments spawned by radical Hindus, the religious leaders of India have spoken out, trying to encourage their people to welcome Pope John Paul II in early November when he arrives in New Delhi rather than protesting. The leaders of the Sihks, Hindus and Jains religions all called for the people to show the Holy Father a warm, rousing reception for he represents the values and virtues all mankind should strive for and that religion does not matter when it comes to human dignity which this man of Rome upholds faithfully. The leaders asked the people to return love for love, not hate for hate. For more, click on India prepares

Catholics of Indonesia hopeful new President will help end discord and violence

With the surprise election of Abdurrahman Wahid as Indonesia's new President replacing the weak B.J. Habibie who received a no confidence vote, Catholics in Indonesia and elsewhere are hopeful that he will right the wrongs committed against Christians, especially most recently in East Timor where hundreds of thousands were persecuted, many killed. Wahid's track record speaks well for his tolerance of Catholics. For more, click on New Indonesian president.

Chinese underground Church shows solidarity with Rome: "We pledge our loyalty to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church."

Despite all the persecution against the underground Catholic Church in China, the people and clerics have pledged their loyalty to the Holy Father and the Roman Catholic Church. The clandestine Church in China, where the government only recognizes the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Church, not in union with Rome, is the closest thing to the early Christians who sought the catacombs to assemble for Holy Mass and the Sacraments. So also today where the underground Catholics are hunted and imprisoned for their Faith. For more, click on Solidarity with Rome .

Presidential Candidate Steve Forbes lauds Bishop's Guide as "an example of the finest form of participation by religious institutions in our national life."

Whether Republican Presidential candidate Steve Forbes is just lobbying for the Catholic vote or he truly means it, he praised the National Conference of Catholics Bishop endeavor to issue the civic responsibility guide to each Catholic in the country which we covered last week. He called it a responsibility all should undertake in upholding the fundamental values which "are not Republican, Democrat, or independent issues. They are human issues and concern an authentic understanding of human rights and obligations." For more, click on Forbes endorses Bishops' Guide.

    Number 34:

    Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.

He proved how the family that prays together, stays together by taking the Rosary universal as the "Rosary Priest"

Today we bring you the 34th person selected out of the TOP 100 CATHOLICS OF THE CENTURY. The voters chose Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., the beloved Irish-born "Rosary Priest" who came into living rooms for decades with the Family Rosary Crusade as families huddled together before the advent of high technology and the break-up of the family unit. He died in 1992 but his legacy lives on as the Rosary is enjoying a renaissance thanks in large part to what he promulgated. Those fruits would not die. The cause for his canonization has been introduced in Rome. For more on the 34th selection, click on FATHER PATRICK PEYTON, C.S.C.

Faith is more than a word, faith means trusting in God, not man!

In his column today, Pat Ludwa treats the subject of beliefs - simply put: faith - and asks in whom do we trust - God or man? Too often society over the centuries has tried to rely on man and dismiss God as a superstitious nonentity. But when we place our trust in man, we get confusion, anger, turmoil, hate, jealousies, greed, even war and bloodshed. Pat shows how throughout nearly 2000 years all those who have placed their "faith" in man and the world have perished into oblivion while His Church, which is the true Faith based on God, continues and grows stronger. There must be something to this "Faith in God" thing, he rationalizes, showing through Sacred Scripture that this indeed is true as revealed in Divine Revelation. For Pat's column Faith is meaningless if not rooted in God , click on VIEW FROM THE PEW

Holy Father shows why we must love our neighbor in order to truly love God

In his most recent regular weekly Wednesday Papal Audience in St. Peter's Square, Pope John Paul II continued his treatise on the Theological Virtue of Charity, this week concentrating on the intrinsic link of love of neighbor to fulfill our love for God, for without love for neighbor the Fruits of the Holy Spirit cannot be manifested because total love means keeping the two great laws - to love God and to love neighbor. Without one of the two, our love is empty. For the Pope's words on his talk, "Love of God demands love of neighbor," click on THE VICAR OF CHRIST SPEAKS.

    Events Today in Church History

Today is the anniversary of the death of two saintly Sovereign Pontiffs. One, Pope Saint Marcellinus was the 29th successor of Peter who died a martyr during the latter days of the Roman persecutions early in the fourth century; the other was Pope Saint Boniface V who ruled from 619 to 625 and who established the privilege of sanctuary for those to take refuge from civil authorities. "True innocence is compassionate"

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

"It was the Pharisee who sneered at the Lord when the adulterous woman came to pour ointment on His feet. He could not understand why Perfection did not pick up His robes from such filth. St. Augustine, who was a great sinner, was a more understanding theologian of the grace and mercy of God than St. Thomas, who had so few human weaknesses. Parents who boast of their moral uprightness can rarely sympathize with the weakness of their children; they too often make virtue repulsive instead of attractive. The description of Christ in the Bible is the ideal: 'We do not have a High Priest Who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One Who has been tempted in every way we are, yet remained without sin.' True innocence is compassionate."

    September 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message

Dear children! Today again I call you to become carriers of my peace. In a special way, now when it is being said that God is far away, He has truly never been nearer to you. I call you to renew prayer in your families by reading the Sacred Scripture and to experience joy in meeting with God who infinitely loves His creatures. Thank you for having responded to my call.

"But the Lord answered him and said, 'Hypocrites! does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or ass from the manger, and lead it forth to water? And this woman, daughter of Abraham as she is, whom satan has bound, lo, for eighteen years, ought not she to be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?'"

    Luke 13: 15-16
