VATICAN ASKS WEALTHY COUNTRIES TO SHARE RESOURCES

VATICAN (CWNews.com) -- The Holy See has called upon the world's affluent nations to devote more resources to helping the poor, and less to providing the developing nations with armaments.

Msgr. Alois Wagner, a Vatican representative at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, made that plea at an annual meeting of the group's executive committee, which is opening this week in Rome. Msgr. Wagner said that wealthy countries should share "their riches and their economic capacities" with the developing world, adopting "a new international social structure" which would encourage economic growth in the Third World. He observed that the most affluent nations are currently involved in efforts to ship advanced weaponry to poor countries, and argued that those resources could better be devoted to easing the countries' financial difficulties.
