CARDINAL HUME GIVEN AWARD BY QUEEN ELIZABETHLONDON (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Basil Hume of London, primate of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, was appointed on Tuesday by Queen Elizabeth to the prestigious Order of Merit.
The order was founded in 1902 and is limited in membership
to the king or queen and 24 others, appointed by the
sovereign. "I would like to think that it is a recognition
of the part played by her majesty's loyal Catholic subjects
-- laity, clergy and bishops -- in the life of the nation,"
said Cardinal Hume, 76, who recently announced that he is
in the advanced stages of cancer.
