Pope will visit Mount Sinai on return trip from Iraq
The Vatican has unofficially confirmed December will be the date of the Papal trip to Iraq and Ur at Chaldea where the Holy Father will begin his historic "Jubilee Journey" first walking in the footsteps of Abraham, then in the footsteps of Moses at Mount Sinai in Egypt before returning to Rome. The Vatican has requested the US to cease bombing of Iraqi military positions during the Pope's visit to Iraq while anti-Saddam Hussein Iraqis are concerned and have formally asked John Paul II to avoid Hussein like the wise men avoided Herod. Pope and Church not afraid of the truths of history, calls for a day of atonement on Ash Wednesday in 2000
As a result of a six-year study the Pope ordered, the Church has been called to a thorough examination of conscience, especially in three stages of history that have been placed under the world's microscope: anti-Semitism, the Inquisition and how well Vatican II teachings have been applied. The first two have already had symposiums, with the Vatican II symposium in Rome in late February next year just prior to March 8th when the Holy Father will call all the faithful to a penitential act of pardon for sins committed by and to Catholics over the centuries. Keep the light of Mother Teresa's legacy of love burning bright
In this weekend's editorial, we recall with love the legacy of Mother Teresa who passed away two years ago Sunday. We remind the reader what she stood for and why we need to keep her ideals in our hearts, souls and actions. By knowing and practicing our faith, living the Gospel and striving daily to willingly take up our cross and follow Christ, seeing Him in all we meet, then, and only then, can we be assured we are keeping Mother's light burning bright. That's the only way she would have it. Like her namesake St. Theresa of Liseiux, it's important not to bite off more than we can chew but rather to do the ordinary things in an extraordinary way. It's only logical that God wants us to think!
In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto treats the subject of discernment in everyday life and how to determine God's Will. She explains that we have the crib sheet of the Commandments and the teachings of Holy Mother Church, but that we need to weigh the good points with the negative to best determine the direction to take. She reminds all that we can't take the Almighty for granted and we can't abuse the privilege of signs by asking nonsensical questions that common sense will answer. In other words, use the God-given gift of our brain and think! That is the gist of Sister's column this weekend For her column this weekend, How to discern God's Will, click on GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

When it comes to Mercy, God wins hands down!
They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"God is more merciful to the men who mock Him than men are merciful to the gods they make. When David sinned, God gave him the choice of being punished either by Him or by man. David chose God - His Mercy is greater."
Weekend Events in Church History
On Sunday we commemorate the death two years ago of one of the world's greatest modern saints. Though she has not yet officially been canonized by the Church, to the global vox populi Mother Teresa already has been sanctified through the countless accounts of her work in Calcutta with the poorest of the poor where she personified Jesus. Appreciation of the universal concept of Catholic as one of the true Marks of the Church
This weekend we continue with our new series in the search to uncover the great treasuries of the Church contained in the great Deposit of Faith. We continue with the essence of the Church - the four marks of the Church - One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic; today exploring the third mark: Catholic, which means universal and sets the Church of Rome apart from the common moniker "Christian" which has been so misused and abused. For the third installment, click on APPRECIATING THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF OUR FAITH
PRAYERS & DEVOTION
In honor of the Feast of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, 64th successor of Peter and Doctor of the Church, we present the Opening Prayer for the Mass in his honor:
Father, You guide Your people with kindness and govern us with love. By the prayers of Saint Gregory give the spirit of wisdom to those You have called to lead Your Church. May the growth of Your people in holiness be the eternal joy of shepherds.
The Gregorian gift to the Church: The Plan of the Mass
In honor of Friday's feast of Pope Saint Gregory the Great we resume the abridged History of the Mass and Holy Mother Church over a 2000 year span called 2000 YEAR VOYAGE ON THE BARQUE OF PETER. Today we bring you the brilliant plan bequeathed by Pope Gregory I to the Church in the latter part of the sixth century that has been perpetuated up to today with only a few changes in the ritual, not not the meaning and essence of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. For the fourth straight week "The Sixth Sense" desensitizes audiences as, thankfully, the disappointing summer movie scene winds down!
Top Ten Films for the final week of the summer
Continuing the mediocre movie trend, "The Sixth Sense" remained in first place for the fourth week in a row, tying "Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace" at the beginning of the summer and last year's titanic film "Titanic" for most weeks in the top spot. Unlike the latter two, "Sense" doesn't make a lot of sense and is a clear indication that this has been a down summer for quality films as the rest of the list affirms. With this Labor Day weekend serving as the last hurrah for the movie industry to try to make heads or tails of the season, we're hopeful there will be more quality films like "Life is Beautiful" issued in the fall. "Life" has been mysteriously delayed for video release. We hear they're tinkering with the voice-over track, redubbing it in English! Don't they get it? It was the mystery of the language and the lilting Italian that made it such a moving story. For the Top Ten reviews for the final week of the summer prepared by the NCCB, click on MOVIES AND MORALS

August 25th Medjugorje Monthly Message
Dear children! Also today I call you to give glory to God the Creator in the colors of nature. He speaks to you also through the smallest flower about His beauty and the depth of love with which He has created you. Little children, may prayer flow from your hearts like fresh water from a spring. May the wheat fields speak to you about the mercy of God towards every creature. That is why, renew prayer of
thanksgiving for everything He gives you. Thank you for having responded to my call.
