Pope will visit Mount Sinai on return trip from Iraq
The Vatican has unofficially confirmed December will be the date of the Papal trip to Iraq and Ur at Chaldea where the Holy Father will begin his historic "Jubilee Journey" first walking in the footsteps of Abraham, then in the footsteps of Moses at Mount Sinai in Egypt before returning to Rome. The Vatican has requested the US to cease bombing of Iraqi military positions during the Pope's visit to Iraq while anti-Saddam Hussein Iraqis are concerned and have formally asked John Paul II to avoid Hussein like the wise men avoided Herod. Pope and Church not afraid of the truths of history, calls for a day of atonement on Ash Wednesday in 2000
 As a result of a six-year study the Pope ordered, the Church has been called to a thorough examination of conscience, especially in three stages of history that have been placed under the world's microscope: anti-Semitism, the Inquisition and how well Vatican II teachings have been applied. The first two have already had symposiums, with the Vatican II symposium in Rome in late February next year just prior to March 8th when the Holy Father will call all the faithful to a penitential act of pardon for sins committed by and to Catholics over the centuries. Jesuit priest fears Indonesian militants not likely to let go of East Timor
 
Despite the suspected overwhelming vote for East Timor's independence expected to be announced in a few days, a Timorese Jesuit priest expresses fear that the violent pro-Indonesia-backed military youths will not honor the UN referendum for independence and continue to reek havoc on the island which is 90% Catholic. Keep the light of Mother Teresa's legacy of love burning bright
 In this weekend's editorial, we recall with love the legacy of Mother Teresa who passed away two years ago Sunday. We remind the reader what she stood for and why we need to keep her ideals in our hearts, souls and actions. By knowing and practicing our faith, living the Gospel and striving daily to willingly take up our cross and follow Christ, seeing Him in all we meet, then, and only then, can we be assured we are keeping Mother's light burning bright. In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto  treats the subject of discernment in everyday life and how to determine God's Will. For the fourth straight week "The Sixth Sense" desensitizes audiences as, thankfully, the disappointing summer movie scene winds down!
Top Ten Films
for the final week of the summer
 Continuing the mediocre movie trend, "The Sixth Sense" remained in first place for the fourth week in a row, tying "Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace" at the beginning of the summer and last year's titanic film "Titanic" for most weeks in the top spot. Unlike the latter two, "Sense" doesn't make a lot of sense and is a clear indication that this has been a down summer for quality films as the rest of the list affirms. With this Labor Day weekend serving as the last hurrah for the movie industry to try to make heads or tails of the season, we're hopeful there will be more quality films like "Life is Beautiful" issued in the fall. "Life" has been mysteriously delayed for video release. We hear they're tinkering with the voice-over track, redubbing it in English! Don't they get it?
