Holy Father focuses on family values and family structure during Wednesday Papal Audience
With the weather getting cooler the Holy Father moved his regular Wednesday Papal Audiences back to Paul VI Hall where he focused on family, emphasizing the great crisis the family is placed in today with secular mores being what they are. The Pope called for nurturing love within the family that will emanate out to others from the "little domestic family." He also asserted the importance that families and society realize a child is not a "burden" but rather a total fulfillment of the love between husband and wife which transforms them into teachers as father and mother, becoming the principal guides to the child's path to Heaven. Highest Islam leader in Egypt urges fellow Muslims in Nazareth to build their mosque elsewhere in deference to their Christian brothers
 
The pharoahs of Egypt weren't quite that understanding, but the Grand Mufti of Egypt is more than understanding. In fact, his comments Wednesday should cause the Muslim community to rethink building their mosque next to the venerated Church of the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. He calls on his fellow Arab community to honor Christianity's claim to this site, urging all to live in harmony and not build a mosque where it would cause consternation for that would forever be on the soul and conscience of those who had fostered this. Secretary of Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace criticizes WTO, points out violence in Seattle is result of society's insistance to have a say and being shut out
Bishop Diarmuid Martin, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace is not surprised by the violent protests in the emerald city of Seattle for WTO operatives have consistently not listened to civil society and gone about business at the detriment of many throughout the world. Bishops' document on liturgy Domus Dei: Liberals hate it, conservatives welcome it
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will vote on at their annual conference in Washington D.C. and promulgate next Fall, if passed, a document on liturgy called Domus Dei which will bring churches and the liturgy more in line with traditional norms of architechture and the liturgy to replace the vague Environment and Art in Catholic Worship (EACW) that has confused so many in dioceses across America. The first draft has been completed and is decried by liberals who fear they are losing their grip. Good. In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto  shows us simple preparations during Advent that include short prayer time and spiritual reading. If we must read, why not read things that will inspire rather than things that pollute such as all the secular trash out there that we're exposed to on a regular basis. We'd be much better off by picking up the Bible and reading a few passages and praying on it, or the writings on the saints no matter how short, or teachings of the Church or anything else spiritual that will edify and inspire us. Our one-hundred-thirtieth red-hat we feature, in alphabetical order, is the 67 year-old American Prefect of the Pontifical Council for the Laity Cardinal James Francis Stafford whose expert handling of World Youth Day in 1983 in his archdiocese of Denver showed to the Pope and the world he would be an excellent choice in guiding the laity into the new millennium. Weekend Events in Church History
Saturday is the 436th anniversary of the day when Pope Pius IV officially closed the landmark 19th Ecumenical Council in the Tridentine mountain village in the remote regions of northern Italy. Because of its location it was forever remembered as the Council of Trent. It had been opened on November 19, 1544 by Pope Paul III lasting 19 years in which it condemned Protestantism, enacted reforms and launched the Counter Reformation. Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. In this time of grace, may the cross be a sign-post of love and unity for you through which true peace comes. That is why, little children, pray especially at this time that little Jesus, the Creator of peace, may be born in your hearts. Only through prayer will you become my apostles of peace in this world without peace. That is why, pray until prayer becomes a joy for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.
