 EDITOR'S NOTE:
We want to remind you to set your clocks ahead one hour tonight so you don't miss Sunday Mass. Time flies and it is fleeting. In the end, only God's time counts.

Because of our special two-part excellent treatise by Father Chad Ripperger, F.S.S.P. on the root cause of the polarized position between Traditionalists and neo-conservatives in the Church today that ran Thursday and Friday, we have moved APPRECIATING THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF OUR FAITH series below to today. This also replaces, for this week only, our regular Saturday series AT ONE WITH GOD - The Charism of Conjugal Love, which will resume next Saturday.

Also note, during the Easter Triduum we will suspend all regular series, including HEROD'S HEROES until Easter Monday when all series will resume in their regular rotation. We feel strongly that, beginning with Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday, all content should be focused on this holiest and most sacred four days of the year. Therefore we will also suspend news during that four-day window to block off all distractions that we may all better concentrate on the sacramental importance of Holy Thursday, the Passion of Good Friday, the Preparation of Holy Saturday and the glorious result of Resurrection Sunday. During this special four-day liturgical period the issues will be abbreviated with heavy emphasis on devotion. We pray this will be a positive aid in complementing your Paschal Triduum with attendance at all liturgical services during this special time of grace.

Power of
the Keys

Church's authority to make laws includes the power to enforce them!

"Our Lord said: 'If he refuses to hear even the Church, let him be to thee as the heathen and the publican. Amen I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound also in Heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.'" Matthew 18: 17-18

Today in our 224th installment of our catechetical series on My Catholic Faith we have completed the Ten Commandments of this catechetical series and begin a seven-part set on The Commandments of the Church. Sadly, many over the past thirty-plus years have not realized that there are Six Commandments exacted by Holy Mother Church in addition to the Ten Commandments. These are often called the "Precepts of the Church" as well. As Jesus instructed Peter in Matthew 16: 18-19 and again in 18: 17-18, the Church was given the power to make laws for He gave His Church power to teach, to sanctify, and to rule its members, in order to lead us to eternal salvation. The difference between God's and the Church's is that the latter can be modified per Christ's command, whereas the former are for all time binding. But because of Our Lord's words, disobedience to the primacy of Peter's authority then is disobedience to God. For today's installment on The Commandments of the Church, see APPRECIATING THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF OUR FAITH.

To the new shepherd* of Rockville Centre, we implore you to call New York Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy to task for his unyielding pro-abortion stance.

Cardinal McCarrick   Today's "Herod's Hero" is the Democratic Congresswoman from Long Island, the Honorable Carolyn McCarthy. There's nothing honorable about how she, as a 'Catholic,' has promoted the culture of death. We call on her to repent and for her shepherd for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, in which see she lives, will censure her. *Note, Bishop James T. McHugh passed away on December 10, 2000 and a permanent successor has not yet been appointed. Because of this we call on McCarthy's ruling prelate in Washington D.C. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, to issue the ultimatum of the "Bell, Book, and Candle" if she will not hear even the Church. We beg of the Bishops, to stand up for the Roman Catholic Church, to exact the discipline all Catholics are expected to follow. By McCarthy's pro-abortion record during her 3 terms in office she has turned away from God by showing a disdain for Catholic doctrine and being a willing accomplice to satan. We implore her to amend her ways, to turn away from embracing the pro-abort stance with no mercy for the lives of millions of unborn. For another betrayer who seeks to perpetuate the culture of death and slay the innocents, see HEROD'S HEROES

The Odyssey Ahead

On final leg of Pope's "Jubilee Journey" in May he could be facing ecumenical landmines

As His Holiness Pope John Paul II prepares for his May jaunt to Syria and Greece, some fear he could be biting off more than the Church can chew - the Orthodox Church that is. Resentment has been building against his visit in Greece and the way things are shaping up, we can only pray he will be safe. The Apostle Paul, whose footsteps the Holy Father will be tracing, might have faced a better reception. But this Pope is a pioneer and, like Paul, he goes fearlessly into uncharted territory in hopes of showing the Roman Church's sincerity. Like Homer did millenniums ago, he ponders his Odyssey into Greece - an Orthodox stronghold. For more, see News from ROME

Pro-abort Tom Daschle's hate crimes bill would open even more wounds!

We should be very leary of a Hate crimes bill pro-abort and supposedly 'Catholic' Tom Daschle, Democratic senator from South Dakota and minority speaker in the Senate, has introduced. While on the surface it might seem an appropriate measure, beneath there is a hidden agenda that would greatly empower the homosexual agenda and further erode Christian ideals and principles. Pro-Life at forefront of Italian elections

Cardinal Ruini issues guidelines for Catholic voters in hopes they will follow the moral order

With national elections in Italy set to coincide with the 84th anniversary of the First Apparition at Fatima - May 13th, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Vicar of Rome, has issued a ten-step litmus test for Catholic voters to study the candidates and weigh their record in respect to the culture of life. Appropriately, it is the most important issue on the ballot regardless of what pro-abort politicians say. Like the U.S. Bishop's guidelines, this is intended to clearly outline for the populace the moral responsibility of the voter. Let's hope Italian voters are clearer on this than 50% of the American voters were. For more, see Pro Life News

Zapatistas responding to Bishop's call!

There indeed is hope on the horizon in Mexico in light of the on-going talks between the Zaptatistas and President Vicente Fox and Congress. Because of the willingness to discuss, the Zapatistas have thus responded to Bishop Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel's homily last Sunday, when he applauded the EZLN's decision to lay down arms and engage in political dialogue. Bishop Arizmendi, of San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, was opposed to Marcos' intransigent positions. For more, see Universal News    ALSO:

Lenten Weekday

    First Reading: Jeremiah 11: 18-20
    Psalms: Psalm 7: 2-3, 9-12
    Gospel Reading: John 7: 40-53

"O Lord, my God, in You I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and rescue me, lest I become like the lion's prey, to be torn to pieces, with no one to rescue me." Psalm 7: 2-3

The Voice of the Disciple

What thou understandest not when thou readest, that thou shalt know in the day of visitation. In two ways I am wont to visit My elect, namely, by trials and by consolation. And day by day I read them two lessons; one by rebuking vices, the other by exhorting them to the increase of virtues.

From Book III, Chapter III of "Imitation of Christ" by Thomas a Kempis.

A new bishop for Chiapas stirs tension

On this day one year ago Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel to succeed Bishop Samuel Ruiz a very popular bishop in the Diocese of San Cristobal de Las Casas in the tense southern state of Chiapas in Mexico. Ruiz had long been an advocate of indigenous rights for the Indians and had been grooming Bishop Ruiz Vera, who was more of a reactionary and more in sync with the Zapatista rebels than the Vatican would have liked. Therefore, the Holy Father, in an effort to bring peace, appointed Bishop Arizmundi and, though the tension has mounted, the most recent march to Mexico City by Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos and his ski-masked supporters' have resulted in hopefully a meeting of the minds between the Zapatistas and President Vicente Fox, who is more open to their plight and a strong Catholic as well. The backing of many Mexican bishops gives hope that a peaceful solution will evolve. See article above. Passion is not unconscious!

"The eye has a reflex action when someone is about to thrust his finger into it, but passion is a conscious affair; it is something that happens to a creature endowed with reason and free will."
