Why Saint Augustine is the ideal saint for all to emulate today in these times when so many are searching for answers and not finding satisfaction until their hearts rest in God.
In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto points out the vices and virtues Saint Augustine lived and, because of the former, all can relate to the fact that he was a great sinner who committed practically every sin, but, through the power of God and the relentless intercession of his mother Saint Monica, Augustine eventually came to his senses after he had tried everything else. He himself said, in one of his most famous quotes, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee." So true, and because of this, Sister suggests he is the ideal saint - the ideal role model for all to be encouraged by, for he responded to Christ's words, "Your sins are forgiven, go and sin no more!" We all need to practice what he preached and lived...after his conversion. For those who aren't there yet, Sister assures them not to despair, just read his "Confessions" and that will give one all the encouragement in the world to shed sin and embrace the graces of God.
