Why Saint Augustine is the ideal saint for all to emulate today in these times when so many are searching for answers and not finding satisfaction until their hearts rest in God.    In her column this week, Sister Mary Lucy Astuto points out the vices and virtues Saint Augustine lived and, because of the former, all can relate to the fact that he was a great sinner who committed practically every sin, but, through the power of God and the relentless intercession of his mother Saint Monica, Augustine eventually came to his senses after he had tried everything else. He himself said, in one of his most famous quotes, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee." So true, and because of this, Sister suggests he is the ideal saint - the ideal role model for all to be encouraged by, for he responded to Christ's words, "Your sins are forgiven, go and sin no more!" We all need to practice what he preached and lived...after his conversion. For those who aren't there yet, Sister assures them not to despair, just read his "Confessions" and that will give one all the encouragement in the world to shed sin and embrace the graces of God. Events that happened Today in Church History    Today is the 729th anniversary of the election in 184th successor of Peter, Blessed Pope Gregory X on this date in 1271 A.D. Before his elevation to the Papal Throne he was the simple priest Archdeacon Tedaldo Visconti - a dear and trusted friend of two of the giants of the Church scholar-wise - the Dominican Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Franciscan Saint Bonaventure. He was elected by the Conclave in Viturbo and the vox populi was so strong for the Cardinals to elect a Pope that they took extreme measures to motivate the College of Cardinals, going so far as to remove the roof of the conclave and restricted the prelates to only bread and water, thus expediting their decision for they had taken much too long in deliberation - three years - and the people wanted to expedite the process. They did and Gregory was unanimously selected. Three years later he convened the 14th Ecumenical Council in Lyons which reunited the Church with the Greeks and enacted reforms that were necessary for discipline. He died on January 10, 1276 after a four and a half year pontificate.
