Events that happened Today in Church History
Today is the 287th anniversary of the birth of the Franciscan missionary priest Blessed Junipero Serra in 1713 in Petra on the Island of Majorca during the pontificate of Pope Clement XI. Junipero would join the Franciscans in 1730 and, following the Will of God, travel to the west coast of America where he would establish 21 missions along the coast, all still in existence today with the first being built at San Diego de Alcala in Mission Valley. He died on August 28, 1784 at the age of 71 in Monterey, California. For other time capsule events that happened Today in Church history, see MILLENNIUM MILESTONES AND MEMORIES
If you want freedom, exercise your free will as God wills
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"People talk most about their health when they are sick, and most about liberty when they are in danger of losing it. Despite all the pleas for liberty, it must be remembered that every flight from responsibility is a flight from liberty and every denial of personal guilt is also a denial of freedom."
