DAILY LITURGY for THURSDAY and FRIDAY
Today, besides being Weekday in Ordinary Time, is also the Feast of Saint Maria Goretti. This young Italian virgin was martyred for her faith in 1902 because she treasured her chastity and would not give in to temptation even when her life was threatened. Her perseverance and intercession have paid dividends countless-fold for her murderer was converted in prison and was present at her canonization by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Her attacker was reunited with St. Maria in 1970 when he died as a Franciscan Capuchin Tertiary. She is the Patron Saint of those who seek to emulate her virtues. Today especially it is necessary for all young people to practice the restraint and virtues she exemplified because more than ever before temptations lurk in all areas of our lives and permeate all walks of life. It is not easy striving for sanctity today. Friday is the FIRST FRIDAY in July and Weekday in Ordinary Time is observed. For the readings, liturgies, meditations, and profile on St. Maria Goretti, see DAILY LITURGY.

The DAILY WORD
Taken from the Gospel for Thursday's Mass

The test of time will measure true enthusiasm and zeal
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".
"Decisions and resolutions taken during an enthusiastic moment mean little unless tested by time and by waiting. At the beginning of the public life of Our Lord, when many wished to follow Him, He refused to accept them: 'He knew what was in man.' The immediate request for places on the right and left side of the kingdom by James and John He ordered tested by the ability to bear sacrifice and to drink the cup of His Passion and Crucifixion."

Following is Our Lady's brief message on the occasion of the 19th Anniversary of the Apparitions.
"Dear children! Today I call you to prayer. The one who prays is not afraid of the future. Little children do not forget, I am with you and I love you all. Thank you for having responded to my call."
