Saint Maria Goretti

Thursday, in addition to observing Ordinary Time, we also commemorate the Feast of the modern 20th century martyr Saint Maria Goretti. She's an excellent role model for all teens to emulate in her passionate embrace of the virtue of chastity. This is especially important in a world today where temptations of the flesh make it so difficult for young people to stay on the straight and narrow in the face of sin.

Vicente Fox

The election this past Sunday of Vicente Fox as the new President of Mexico signals an epiphany for Mexico's government and bodes well for the Catholic Church in Mexico according to news sources. The restrictions imposed by the PRI government will hopefully be a thing of the past for many believe Fox and his Action National Party or PAN will be Church-friendly since Mexico is so heavily Roman Catholic and he seeks to unify and strengthen its people in this new millennium.

In Dr. Frank Joseph's eye-opening Pro-Life Prescriptions column today he rails at the recent Supreme Court decision by the "Faulty Five" that overturned the Partial-Birth Abortion ban in Nebraska which ultimately signaled the death knell for all other states. For this ignominious decision Dr. Frank awards the 2000 contingent of Supreme Court Justices the unenviable "Jurisprudence Absurdity" Title.

Saint Thomas More

Today we commemorate the 465th anniversary of the death of Saint Thomas More, the Chancellor for King Henry VIII. Thomas' ethics and loyalty to a higher king were more important to him than temporal powers and riches and he paid for it dearly in martyrdom by decapitation, ordered by the cruel, prideful and lustful monarch.. But More's legacy lives on and stands today as the ideal role model for every lawyer and jurist to emulate for their official patron saint. His feast is celebrated on June 22nd.

The Precious Blood flows from the Sacred Heart, the center of "the inexhaustible source of grace that every person can always reach" the Holy Father stresses in his Angelus Address this past Sunday
His Holiness reads his Wednesday Message    In his Angelus Address on the first Sunday of July, Pope John Paul II reminded all that July is the month of the Precious Blood, which flows from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His Heart is the center of our lives, the Pope explained before a large audience in St. Peter's Square, and reminds us that we must be centered in Christ's Heart in order to be centered in life. His Holiness also stressed that His Blood was spilled for us and those martyrs that died for Him were not in vain and we must remember them and why He died and why the countless martyrs gave their lives for Him as well: "That Blood was not shed in vain and carries in itself all the power of the love of God and is a pledge of hope, rescue, and reconciliation. To reach this source, however, it is necessary to turn to the Cross of Christ, look upon the Son of God, on that pierced Heart, on that spilled Blood." He finishes up his address by reminding all that the Blessed Virgin Mary is our refuge in finding reconciliation, hope and peace through her Divine Son.
