St. Mother Seton    Lord God, You blessed Elizabeth Seton with gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to Your people. Through her example and prayers may we learn to express our love for You in love for our fellow men and women.

The DAILY WORD
Taken from the Gospel for Thursday's Mass

"Again the next day John was standing there, and two of His disciples. And looking upon Jesus as He walked by, he said, 'Behold the lamb of God!' And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus."

John 1: 35-37

Appreciation for the Sixth and Ninth Commandments of God

    "Thou shalt not commit Adultery"
    and
"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife"

Today we continue our series in the search to uncover the wonderful treasures of the Church contained in the great Deposit of Faith as explained in My Catholic Faith. The Ten Commandments are the foundation of our moral code set down by God and the Sixth and Ninth Commandment - "Thou shalt not commit Adultery" and "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" are two of the most violated commandments. Wars, pestilences, divorces and misery have been the result of not following God's command and that is especially pertinent today when a permissive society is rampant with immorality and a blatant rejection of these two important commandments that protect our bodies and souls. Our Lady has confirmed over the centuries in visions and messages that there are more souls in hell because of the sins of the flesh. For the 212th installment, see APPRECIATING THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF OUR FAITH

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS TRADITION
Eleventh Day of Christmas=Eleven faithful Apostles

    Eleventh Day of Christmas
"On the eleventh day of Christmas my True Love gave to me eleven pipers piping"

So many have misinterpreted the Twelve Days of Christmas with a secular meaning, but they fail to realize that, in fact, they were a "secret catechism code" sung by persecuted Roman Catholics from the Protestant Reformation through the French Revolution. It was their way of communicating their faith much in the same manner the early Christians did with symbols such as the fish. The eleven pipers piping stood for the Eleven Faithful Apostles who stuck with Jesus when seemingly all others had abandoned Him. They were referred to as "pipers" for they indeed were sent out to all corners to spread the Gospel as Our Lord had commanded and, like the "Pied Piper of Hamlin" they attracted many to the One, True Faith. It was a way for Catholics to remind their fellow faithful to keep this in mind during the hard times for all but Saint John were persecuted and martyred for the faith. If they remained faithful to their Faith and to Jesus, they too would one day enjoy the same rewards of Heavenly bliss.

We are grateful to the artist Shannon Wirrenga (701-255-7312) for permission to use the phenomenal and touching original painting above of Jesus smiling at a newborn babe full of life, a life that He allows. It is appropriately titled "I Knew You," taken from Jeremiah 1: 5. No entity, matter or energy can exist without God and He alone gives and takes life. Life is the most precious gift we have been given. That is why we dedicate this section to the Sanctity of Life for so few realize the treasures it holds from conception to the grave.

The elections are over, but the battle for life is not. We cannot give up the fight. Please continue to pray that President George W. Bush and his cabinet will promote legislation for the Sanctity of Life and pray for those pro-abort congressmen, senators and governors that they will have a conversion of heart and recognize the evil of their ways. Remember, nothing is impossible with God. We encourage you to go to the Pro-Life links below to keep up to date on the great battle between life and death - the Sanctity of Life vs. the culture of death. For more see, PRO LIFE FOR LIFE

Events that happened Today in Church History

Pope St. Eutychian   Today is the 1,726th anniversary of the election of Pope Saint Eutychian as the 27th in the line of the Apostle Peter. His pontificate lasted 8 years, ending in martyrdom on December 7, 283. It was St. Eutychian who decreed that a cloak known as the Dalmatic and similar to what the Roman Emperors wore, be placed over the remains of each martyr. This vestment is today worn by deacons at solemn religious ceremonies. This Pope also began the tradition of blessing the crops for all agricultural areas in Rome and elsewhere. Famous quotes of Bishop Fulton J. SheenHow clear is a 'clear conscience' when the end does not justify the means?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the words of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen have been known to launch a thousand images in one's mind, one of the ways this late luminary did so much to evangelize the faith. Because of the urgency of the times and because few there are today who possess the wisdom, simplicity and insight than the late Archbishop who touched millions, we are bringing you daily gems from his writings. The good bishop makes it so simple that we have dubbed this daily series: "SIMPLY SHEEN".

"Some make the justification for their actions, 'My conscience is clear.' What conscience is not clear if it makes its own standards? What note on a piano is wrong if the musician who strikes it declares it to be the right note? If a conscience decides that eighteen inches will be a yard, who shall prove him wrong? The atheistic Krushchev, with all the crimes of the Ukraine on his back, said, 'God knows I do right.'" "
