Events that happened Today in Church History
Today is the 1,726th anniversary of the election of Pope Saint Eutychian as the 27th in the line of the Apostle Peter. His pontificate lasted 8 years, ending in martyrdom on December 7, 283. It was St. Eutychian who decreed that a cloak known as the Dalmatic and similar to what the Roman Emperors wore, be placed over the remains of each martyr. This vestment is today worn by deacons at solemn religious ceremonies. This Pope also began the tradition of blessing the crops for all agricultural areas in Rome and elsewhere.
