Events that happened Today in Church History
Today is the 1,375th anniversary of the election of Pope Honorius I as the 60th successor of Peter in 625. He would rule for thirteen years. He established the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 and, like our present Holy Father, had a great zeal for the missions, sending many priests and monks into foreign lands to evangelize the Faith in fulfillment of Mark 16: 15. Honorius also resolved the long standing controversy over the Three Chapters which first rose its ugly head in the mid sixth century over the controversy under the Eastern Emperor Justinian which resulted in various heresies and the condemnation of them at the Council of Chalcedon. Yet the schism of Aquilea kept it alive until he put an end to it. Pope Honorius, who had been elected two days after the death of Pope Boniface V, died on October 12, 638. These are but popular ways of expressing the virtue of humility, which does consist so much in humbling ourselves before others as it does in recognizing our own littleness in comparison to what we ought to be."
