SNOW JOB!Official Logo of the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics

The title could refer to the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan which opened this Saturday in an area north of Tokyo - 56 years ago the bitter enemy of the United States and the rest of the allies. Location of Winter OlympicsToday Japan is an ally, not militarily but commerce-wise, actually surpassing all other nations in technology; and today, America has another enemy - Saddam Hussein. Though we know he is a definite threat to the free world with the spectre of chemical and nuclear weapons looming, we have to ask if America is getting a "Snow Job" from the current troubled administration in an effort to divert the citizens' attention away from the sex scandals permeating the headlines. It's a case of life imitating art with the film "Wag the Dog" covering the very same topics. In today's commentary, we begin a series of editorials on how far we've strayed from the sheltered Mantle of Mary who has been entrusted as our patroness. This ties in with the theme leading up to the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on Wednesday. click on Today's CATHOLIC PewPOINT

The official link between the Mother of God and America!       Though the Blessed Virgin Mary has been associated with many causes, apparitions and messages in the United States, the official link between Our Lady and America is the Immaculate Conception which Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1947, seven years before proclaiming it as Dogma and eleven years before Our Lady appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous to confirm this. Therefore, the site we review today ties in with all this - namely the site representing the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. click on SIGNIFICANT SITE OF THE WEEK

Unless we put our hearts into it, unity is just a state of mind! Father Stephen Valenta, OFM Conv.      The fact that when we think too much trouble follows is what Father Stephen Valenta, OFM Conv. illustrates in his column dealing on Unity and Strength in relationship to praying with the heart as he continues his expertise instruction on how to pray from and live in the heart in his twentieth column today. The new image of the lay person in the Church
animated gifs used with permission of EWTN      The Holy Father's Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles Laici shows how the laity new role in the Church, evangelization and striving for personal holiness has evolved to give the lay role a higher status in the Church. But with this privilege comes more responsibility as Dr. Joseph Bagiackas summarizes in his expert analysis of the Pope's writings. For the sixth installment, dealing with Chapter One and the Definition of the Laity and the Lay Person's Call to Holiness, click on THE VICAR OF CHRIST SPEAKS

The calm before the storm
Today's liturgy is the calm weekday Mass before the storm of three outstanding luminaries of the Church - tomorrow Saint Scholastica, Virgin and Religious Foundress of the Benedictine nuns and the following day - the Blessed Mother of God - the Immaculate Conception and Saint Bernadette Soubirous on the special feast of Our Lady of Lourdes who has stormed Heaven with petitions of grace and favors on her children through healings and promises. PRAYERS & DEVOTION
The following is taken from the Opening Prayer of Saint Jerome Emiliani whose feast yesterday was superceded by the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Therefore we bring you the prayer today.
God of Mercy, You chose Jerome Emiliani to be a father and friend of orphans. May his prayers keep us faithful to the Spirit we have received, who makes us Your children.

Medjugorje Monthly Message for January 25th

The Gospa     Dear children! Today again I call all of you to prayer. Only with prayer, dear children, will your heart change, become better, and be more sensitive to the Word of God. Little children, do not permit satan to pull you apart and to do with you what he wants. I call you to be responsible and determined and to consecrate each day to God in prayer. May Holy Mass, little children, not be a habit for you, but life. By living Holy Mass each day, you will feel the need for holiness and you will grow in holiness. I am close to you and intercede before God for each of you, so that He may give you strength to change your heart. Thank you for having responded to my call!

From Russia with Love...or Cunning? Pope to find out when they meet tomorrow!
The much-anticipated meeting between Russian President Boris Yeltzin and Pope John Paul II will take place tomorrow at the Vatican. The Holy Father very much wants to discuss Religious Freedom in Russia and many suspect Yeltzin will counter by extending an invitation to the pontiff to visit, much to the consternation of the Russian Orthodox. Once again the Holy Father is thrust into the center of a political situation which only he can soften and solve through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Click on Yeltzin visit to read more.

We know the Holy Father will not mince words with Yeltzin when it comes to Religious Freedoms
With the impending visit tomorrow, writer Lawrence A. Uzzell of the Keston News Service spells out the problems Catholics are presently experiencing as more and more religious freedoms are being curtailed. The persecutions tie in with what Our Lady has said, first at Fatima and then many places after about Russia and what is echoed by Ukranian visionary and mystic Josyp Terelya who likened Yeltzin's countenance to the face of satan. Baghdad Bishop begs for Mercy from the world as Iraq and U.S. come closer to war
As an injured dove, prey to the hawks of America and Saddam Hussein, the Latin-Rite Catholic Bishop spoke out late last week petitioning the nations to lift the embargo for the people of Iraq who are caught in the vice, being squeezed by the lack of food and medicine. Lamenting the terrible conditions of his people, he asks for calmer heads to bring some common sense to the principals who perpetuate this battle of words that could erupt into full-scale war.
