Today is Opening Day in ballparks across America when the baseball season officially gets under way. In today's editorial we reminisce about this national pasttime and how it equates with life and our journey by inning. We're not going to win every game, we're not going to go four-for-four in every outing or pitch the perfect game, but if we work on the fundamentals - God's Laws and obedience to His Holy Church, then we should gell into winners. Like fans in the stands, we need to encourage our team - our fellow man when they're feeling blue, when they're having problems with their faith. That is the heart of Jesus' message in Lesson/Meditation #79 in which He counsels us to Counsel the Doubtful as part of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. We need to be sensitive to others as part of our evangelization efforts which Jesus and His Vicar on earth call us to. We can only be the teachers He wants if we study up on our faith and practice what we preach through frequent reception of the Sacraments. There are many times in a ballgame when our team is down and looks like they could be headed for defeat, but then someone steps to the plate to get that key hit to spark a come-from-behind rally. Such was the case with Holy Mother Church when the cardinals elected Pope Alexander IV in 1254 to relieve the terrible "pitcher" before him Pope Innocent IV who had left the Church in shambles. Though Alexander was weak in military prowess, he was strong in spiritual matters and was a great crusader for the mendicant orders which would go on to save the day as you'll see in the sixty-second installment Pope Alexander IV Trying to pick up the pieces and reestablish trust. A ball goes through an infielder's glove and he is humiliated. A pitcher walks ten runs in and the bases are still loaded, a team is in the throes of a terrible slump. All downers in baseball, but that is nothing compared to what Christ suffered for our sins during the horrific scourging as we vividly see in part three of Meditative Lesson 10: THE SCOURGING AND CROWNING WITH THORNS Christ's resolve to persevere should motivate us to hang in there no matter what the obstacles, no matter what our adversary below throws at us for we can be assured Jesus is always in the on-deck circle of our hearts and souls. Dear children! Also today I call you to fasting and renunciation. Little children, renounce that which hinders you from being closer to Jesus. In a special way I call you: Pray, because only through prayer will you be able to overcome your will and discover the will of God even in the smallest things. By your daily life, little children, you will become an example and witness that you live for Jesus or against Him and His will. Little children, I desire that you become apostles of love. By loving, little children, it will be recognized that you are mine. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Pope echoes what Saint John Bosco preachedOne week from World Youth Day in Rome, the Holy Father ventured out into the streets of Rome to visit the Church of Jesus Adolescent, a parish specifically for troupled youth that was founded by Pope Pius XII after the Second World War. Pope John Paul II echoed the resolve and ideals of another Italian more than a century ago who devoted his life to the youth: Saint John Bosco and urged all not to abandon the troubled youth, but to show them the Spiritual Works of Mercy. It was a fait accomplis that Rudolph Kos, the fifty-two year-old former priest in the Diocese of Dallas, would be convicted. The question was how many convictions. The answer came Monday when a Dallas jury handed in the guilty verdict. Sentencing is yet to come, but for many the wounds will heal slowly while many others hope this closes the final chapter on a tragic era in the Diocese which has suffered greatly from Kos' actions. In Ireland the Christian Brothers spoke candidly in asking forgiveness for the transgressions of child abuse and some sexual abuse their members may have committed over the years. The twelve year run as Superior General for the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate ends this year for Father Marcello Zago,OMI, but the Holy Father announced he will become an Archbishop and his work as Secretary of the Congregation for Evangelization will begin.
