Roll Call on Unborn Victims of Violence Act
Broken down by Catholic vote as well
Note: Because our server was malfuntioning yesterday and because of the importance of knowing how Catholic politicians voted - Pro-Life in Blue, pro-abort in red - we are repeating this today. The 252-172 roll call Thursday by which the House passed the pro-life
Unborn Victims of Violence Act can be broken down in the following perspective:
Voting YES (pro-life, for the bill) were 53 Democrats, 198 Republicans and
1 independent.
Voting NO (anti-life, against the bill) were 150 Democrats, 21 Republicans
and 1 independent.
X denotes those not voting.
P denotes those who voted they were "present" at the time of the vote but
did not vote "yes" or "no" on the issue.
There are 2 vacancies in the 435-member House.
The following votes are listed by state delegation.
Those in Blue = Catholic House Republicans who voted for the bill
In Navy Blue = Catholic House Democrats who voted for the bill
Those in Red underlined = Catholic House Republicans who voted against the Pro-Life measure, ergo: pro-aborts
Those in Red = Catholic House Democrats who voted against the Pro-Life measure, ergo: pro-aborts
Bold black = Democrats who voted for the bill
Italic black = Republicans who voted against the bill
Tan = Did not vote
* = How the Catholic Democrats helped swing their state
What is so promising about this first bill of the new Congress - 107th - and the first Pro-Life bill in 2001 is the number of Democrats who voted for the culture of life. 45 Republicans voted for it; 45 Democrats voted against it. Three Republicans - New York's Sherwood Boehlert, Maryland's Connie Morella and Florida's Mark Foley from Palm Beach all went against God and their party in voting against the bill. Conversely 25 Democrats went against their party and voted for God and life. That is encouraging. What is even more encouraging is that some are seeing the error of their ways and could be repenting of their past voting record.
A few who stand out here are New York's Charles Rangel who voted for the bill. That is the first Pro-life vote he has cast and so it's a start. As we have stated, as the Prodigal son we will gladly welcome him back. E-mail him and thank him for seeing the light at ny15@legislators.com
Another is David Obey of Wisconsin who we just covered a few days ago. He cast a vote for the bill, while Jerry Kleczka, whom we had categorized as "Herod's Helper" voted against the bill. Therefore, tomorrow Mr. Kleczka will be featured as the 53rd on the list as "Herod's Heroes." Another from Wisconsin, Thomas Barrett also voted against the bill. So we encourage you to write Congressman Obey and thank him for the vote for he too could be seeing the light and the importance of the Sanctity of Life where his Faith is more important than his party. David Obey's e-mail is wi07@legislators.com.
Two "Herod's Helpers" listed thus far have helped not only their own cause for living their Catholicity, but showed a sincere desire to help turn their Party away from the culture of death with a vote for the Pro-Life bill. They are Massachusetts' Richard Neal and New York's Michael McNulty. Their e-mails are ma02@legislators.com and mike.mcnulty@mail.house.gov respectively.
Watch also in the near future for a special section saluting those Catholic Democrats and Republicans who did vote for the Sanctity of Life.
