Report: Bush Prepared to Name Vatican Ambassador
DENVER, Mar. 5, 01 (CWNews.com) - President George W. Bush
is prepared to name the former head of the national
Republican Party as his pick as ambassador to the Vatican,
according to a report in the Denver Post newspaper on
Friday.
Jim Nicholson, a Colorado developer who spent the last four
years as leader of the Republican Party, is "a devout
Catholic... perfect for the job," according to sources
consulted by the newspaper. Other reports by the National
Journal and the Washington Post also name Nicholson as a
top prospect for the Vatican, or possibly Australia,
although Nicholson himself had reportedly named Secretary
of the Army as his first choice. That possibility has faded
recently, sources said.
Nicholson, 63, served four years as chairman of the
Republican National Committee. His second term ended in
mid-January.
