Man Pleads Guilty to Cardinal Threats
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 13, 01 (CWNews.com) - A Puerto Rican man
pleaded guilty on Monday to charges he threatened to kill
Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua of Philadelphia and members of
the charity Casa del Carmen.
Aldo Muniz, 41, admitted to placing six phone calls from
his mother's home in Puerto Rico between March and May
2000. He said he would kill workers at Casa del Carmen,
blow up a church, and shoot the cardinal. Muniz had worked
part-time at the charity in 1992 and 1993. He insisted he
did not intend to harm anyone, but just wanted to make them
afraid.
Muniz's attorney Eric Vos said his client has a history of
mental illness, and was neither taking his medication nor
undergoing therapy at the time. He was scheduled to be
sentenced May 17. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 40
years in federal prison and $1.5 million in fines.
