US Ranks Third in Catholic Population
HUNTINGTON, Indiana, Feb. 9, 01 (CWNews.com) - The United
States ranks third in the world in Catholic population,
behind Brazil and Mexico, according to the 2001 Catholic
Almanac.
Brazil had 139 million Catholics, Mexico 118 million, and
the US 62.4 million. The remainder of the top 10 Catholic
countries, in order, are the Philippines, Italy, France,
Poland, Spain, Colombia, and Germany.
In the US, Rhode Island is the most Catholic state with
64.3 percent of the population being Catholic, with
neighboring Massachusetts coming in at just under half of
the population as Catholic. California, New York, and Texas
have the the largest total Catholic populations, with the
three states containing one-third of the US Catholic
population. Catholics make up 22.7 percent of the US.
