Dr. Frank Joseph's Pro-Life Prescriptions LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL column for October 25, 2000

The Opportunity of a Lifetime can also be the Opportunity of Eternity!

It isn't often that people have the opportunity to save thousands of lives every year. Just think about it-- a human life. To save just one life would be reason enough to feel good, to be counted among God's soldiers who "fought the good fight." But to be a part in the saving of about 5000 lives every year would elicit a satisfaction of overwhelming proportions, not to mention the tremendous graces and merits in Heaven.

Think about it, when the time has come to meet your Creator, you may not remember the lives that you helped to save but you will be at peace, because you know that God remembers all the good that you do.

You say that you WOULD help to save thousands of lives every year, if only you had the opportunity?

Well, I've got great news for you -- you DO have the opportunity. An opportunity that comes along only once in a lifetime. It will take very little of your time.

And what is this wonderful gift that God has bestowed on us -- that we can actually save the lives of our fellow man? God gave us a free will and a brain, to use as we see fit. He placed us in a country that has free elections.

We please God by casting our vote for pro-life candidates, those men and women who will uphold the culture of life over the devastating, immoral and deadly culture of death. Our vote can be used to elect a man, who will sign the death warrants for about 5,000 of God's most precious children every year, or we can vote for a man who will sign the BAN to outlaw the killing of babies while they're being born, -- the barbaric partial-birth abortion, a procedure that the medical profession scorns. Itís mere existence is just political. Itís payback time by Clinton and Gore, to the abortion industry and the Hollywood crowd for their money.

When Clinton was running for president, he said he was against abortions, BUT, he still thought that a woman should have the right to choose. [to kill her baby] He also said that he wanted fewer abortions done. He really didn't mean that -- he lied, because the very first time he got a chance to have fewer abortions done, he vetoed the ban on a procedure that is so brutal that it would make a grown person sick.

It is a procedure that the American Medical Association says is never needed to save the life of the mother, nor to ensure her health. One would think that Clinton/Gore, the abortion mills, NARAL and people of all walks of life, who have no sense of common decency would be satisfied with the killing of 1.4 million children of God every year in the first 16 weeks of gestation. But no -- they want abortions legal right up to birth.

Even the fact that Clinton/Gore were presented with reliable studies that unborn babies feel excruciating pain when they are killed at 20 weeks gestation, made NO difference to them. MONEY for their political futures was at stake. What's 5,000 more lives every year?

Recently Bishop James T. McHugh of Long Island, New York said it best in denying any pro-abort to speak on any Catholic property in his diocese when he asserted, "We are not just private citizens but representatives of the Catholic Church." Although he says, "there is to be no mention, for or against, any candidate for public office from the pulpit," he urges priests to "call attention to the culture of death" including "the contradiction of claiming to be a faithful Catholic while rejecting the teaching of the Church."

With that in mind, how many times have Catholics been told that the Doctrine of the Catholic Church forbids all abortions and all who knowingly and willingingly assist in perpetuating the killings could be self-excommunicating themselves from the Church? It's true. Canon 1371 asserts in paragraph 2 that "a person who wrongly does not otherwise comply with the legitimate precepts or prohibitions of the Apostolic See, the ordinary or the superior and who persists in disobedience, after a warning." It's time other bishops follow the actions of Bishop McHugh, Bishop Elden Curtiss of Omaha, Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz, Archbishop Charles Chaput, all the American cardinals, Bishop John Myers and many more of their peer shepherds who have spoken out so strongly already. The United States Bishops Conference has spoken out, but individual bishops need to fortify and clarify it so all Catholics are totally clear on the consequences of voting against life. They need to sound the warning to all who would disobey the Church precepts of upholding life.

It is already set in stone in Canon Law 1398 for one who has an abortion, "A person who procures a successful abortion incurs an automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication." In addition Canon 1364 states, "With due regard for Canon 194, paragraph 1, n. 2, an apostate from the faith, a heretic or a schismatic incurs automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication and if a cleric, he can also be punished by the penalties mentioned in canon 1336, paragraph 1, nn.1, 2, and 3." Is not a Catholic who promotes or condones the culture of death an apostate from the faith? Is not this belief heresy to what the Church teaches? Ergo, are not pro-aborts in schism? Priests everywhere who are so concerned about upsetting the status quo by speaking out strongly against abortion shouldn't be worried about rocking the boat, but rather be gravely concerned about the execution of these canons. Publicly they may not be reprimanded, but we all know Who keeps the great book. With two weeks to go it's something every cleric should think about as well as every lay Catholic before it's too late!

A person who votes for a man, knowing full well that he WILL veto a ban that prohibits these killings is just as guilty as a politician who vetoes the ban, because you have given your blessing to the killings. Your vote could have ended the American holocaust.

And when you're ready to meet your Maker, can you take the chance that God is going to somehow absolve you? Do you think you should be absolved, since you had the opportunity to vote for a man who would have signed the ban that would have saved 5,000 children of God every year? Even the life of one child is worth a vote for Life!

You may think you're in good stead with the Church, even going so far as defying the Church to excommunicate them as Frances Kissling of 'catholics' for a free choice has done. Whether the Church makes it official or not, she is excommunicated in God's eyes and that's all that counts. Remember Christ's words in Matthew 16: 19, "and whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven." Now realize, the Church has not "loosed" the sin of murder. It is still a commandment, the fifth one, in fact. The Church has not relaxed the attitude toward protecting the unborn, but made it stronger through the Popes of Vatican II. Therefore, consider also Canon 1376 regarding Offenses Against Ecclesiastical Authorities and the Freedom of the Church, "One who profanes a movable or immovable sacred thing is to be punished with a just penalty." Think about it, what is more sacred than a human life created by God? Isn't someone who is an accessory to the profanity of abortion by their vote not only sinning against God, but violating this canon law and therefore deserves whatever penalty the Church chooses to dole out?

The upcoming elections on November 7 will be the most important election in the entire history of our country. It will be the first time that people will have the opportunity to vote for someone who will save lives, or a person who will destroy lives.

Never before did we know in advance the mindset of a presidential candidate on this subject. When Clinton was running for president eight years ago, no one knew that he would veto a ban on partial-birth abortions. A ban that was passed OVERWHELMINGLY in congress. They knew it was infanticide, which is just sugar coating for murder. But Clinton, who promised fewer abortions, vetoed the ban to pay back his biggest contributors.

We know in advance that Al Gore has promised to also VETO the ban if he becomes president, because he is also in the pockets of the abortion industry and the Hollywood film industry.

We also know in advance that George W. Bush WILL SIGN the ban and no child of God will be tortured and killed when they are 3/4 born and our country will be better off for it.

Therefore, the line in the sand has been drawn. If Catholics step over it and go against the will of God through their own stubborn or selfish wills then, as the pro-life candidate has been emphasizing, there must be accountability for their actions or inactions if they decline to cast a vote for life at all. We know there is accountability before God. It's so sad that so many Catholics don't realize this, continuing to be blinded by the world, the flesh and the devil - all for the almighty dollar and what's in it for them.

The time is now for the bishops to speak out stronger than ever. Some have, not enough however to truly bring home the point and the guilt lies with those shepherds who, through their lukewarmness will cause confused Catholics to eschew their conscience and cast their ballot on empty promises, trusting man over God. We all know what God says in Apocalypse/Revelation 3: 16, "But because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to vomit thee out of My mouth." Those are strong words, my friends.

That entire passage is for the Church at Laodicea, but we could very well call it the Church in America for the words apply very much to the United States and the faithful today. Consider, "because thou sayest, 'I am rich and have grown wealthy and have need of nothing,' and dost not know that thou art the wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked one...As for Me, those whom I love I rebuke and chastise. Be earnest therefore and repent. Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man listens to My voice and opens the door to Me, I will come in to him and will sup with him and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will permit him to sit with Me upon My throne; as I also have overcome and have sat with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches" (Apocalypse/Revelation 3: 17, 19-22).

Can you see where God stands? Can you see where His Church stands? Can you see why it is paramount, nay vital that all the faithful of the Church repent and open the door to Christ, to Life? Of course. All other issues lumped together are not as important as saving the lives of these babies. One does NOT have to be a rocket scientist to understand this. It is intrinsically imprinted on our souls, our hearts and our consciences.

Why do we even have to be told by the Catholic Church that all life is sacred, from conception to natural death? Do we not know it without being told? Do we not have any sense of common decency?

Surely you must know that your vote for a pro-life, or a pro-abortion candidate for president, congress, or at the state or local level WILL be in your resume, when you apply for a position in the kingdom of God.

Is this not the least we can do for God, Who sent His only Son to die on the cross for our sins? There are 60 million Catholics in the United States. 40 million of voting age. Catholics have the glorious opportunity to end partial-birth abortions by their vote. They have the glorious opportunity to open the door wide to "the Truth, the Way and the Life."

Let me make it more simple. If Gore is elected president, it will be the fault of Catholics -- that thousands of babies will be brutally murdered every year, while they are being born. Can you live with that? If not, pray, speak out firmly in defending life and Vote for Life! In the shortrun, or in the longrun - as in forever and ever - there is no other alternative!
