Explanation of Pat Ludwa's VIEW FROM THE PEW column

INTRODUCTION

Pat Ludwa, a committed lay Catholic from Cleveland, has been asked to contribute, on a regular basis, a lay person's point of view on the Church today. We have been impressed with his insight and the clear logic he brings to the table from his "view from the pew." In all humility, by his own admission, he feels he has very little to offer, but we're sure you'll agree with us that his viewpoint is exactly what millions of the silent majority of Catholics believe and have been trying to say as well. Pat puts it in words that help all of us better understand and convey to others what the Church teaches and we must believe.

In today's issue Pat Ludwa takes us back to common sense. In these days when things look so bleak, he reminds us that, like Dicken's literary portrayal of two cities in "Tale of Two Cities", these are the best of times, the worst of times. He takes us back to well before the English author to another author, a far, far greater one, a man with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit whose excellent treatise "City of God" puts in perspective why our hopes and fears for temporal solutions are useless if we are focusing on the city of man. He prods us to recall the meaning behind Saint Augustine's words as Pat quotes this wise and holy Doctor of the Church and shows the differences between those intent on doing God's Will through obedience to His Holy Church's teachings and those both outside and inside the Church, who would work toward construction of a fleeting, finite metropolis of materialism and measure their success by how high they can scale the skyscrapers of rationalism, confusion and deceit. Indeed, as he documents in the prophet Jeremiah's advice, Our Lord's assuring words, and Paul's entreaty to Timothy, these towers will tumble like Babel and those who put their faith in the false municipalities of modernism will suffer the same fate that occurred in Genesis 11. That is the gist of his column this week, The best and worst of times
