Dr. Frank Joseph's Pro-Life Prescriptions: LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!

We've enlisted Frank Joseph, MD, a committed retired Catholic physician from Southern California to write a special pro-life column for the DailyCATHOLIC which will appear each Wednesday exulting the Catholic beliefs on creation and procreation in upholding the Sanctity of Life.

As the Catholic Church in America goes, so goes America!    part one

I must say, that as a Catholic, I am greatly saddened by the Catholic Church in America's weak effort in trying to stop the killing of unborn babies. As you read on over the next two installments, you will know the reasons.

In the not so distant past, I read an article that stunned my every fiber. A column written by Peter Brimelow for the October 18, 1999 issue of Forbes Magazine entitled "Who Has Abortions?" by the Alan Guttmacher Institute. For brevity, I'll just include the differences in religious background, which are striking.

54% of American women describe themselves as Protestants, but they had only 37% of the abortions. Since most blacks are Protestants, this suggests that the white Protestant abortion rate is quite low. Roman Catholics are more likely to abort than Protestants: They account for 31% of the population -- and of the abortions.

This last statistic was the stunner. Catholics, lead all other Christian denominations in killing their unborn babies. How could this be? The Church that Jesus Christ founded and is the mother of all other Christian Churches, is lagging behind. The Protestant ministers are doing a better job from the pulpit than Catholic priests.

Is it possible that Catholics figure that if they have their baby killed, why they'll just go to confession, and their sins will be forgiven? If that's true we need to reeducate the masses as to the gravity of the sin and go back to tweaking consciences where the guilt syndrome prevented so many from committing serious mortal sin. It's also important to realize the many ways of sinning both through active and passive ways.

Most Catholics don't know that it's a sin to condone the killing of unborn babies, by saying, "I think abortions are wrong, but a woman should have that choice." Because in reality, you are sanctioning the taking of a human life - a mortal sin. This support and encouragement acts as an authoritative permission, which influences women to kill their unborn babies. Thus you are a party to these mass killings and a great delight to satan.

Most Catholics have never heard of the following Bible quotation and if they have, they don't know what it means: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart" (Jeremiah 1: 5).

This ignorance is manifested in the Catholic vote. As an example, in California, the last two Sundays before the last elections, nothing concerning abortions was even mentioned on the pulpit from our parish priests.

Gray Davis, a Catholic, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in California, stated that he was Pro-choice on all of his TV ads. As you know, he won. Dan Lungren, also a Catholic, would not compromise his religious beliefs. In his TV ads, he said he was Pro-life. It was later revealed that Davis got most of the Catholic vote. How could this be?

I know that the Catholic Church does not want to get involved in politics, because of their tax status -- but this is ridiculous. This is not a political issue -- it's a moral issue!!! You don't have to mention names, or any particular party, but you can certainly tell the parishioners to vote for Pro-life candidates in order to save the lives of God's most precious creations.

Even if they lost their tax status -- so what. There's a passage in the Bible that says, For what will profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8: 36).

How those who say they believe in God, can ignore the above scripture is beyond me. Besides they WILL NOT lose their tax status, for trying to save the lives of babies. Clinton, before the last elections, actually went to Black churches to ensure their vote. It paid off -- over 90% of the Blacks voted Democratic (for Pro-abortion candidates). Had the priests and bishops of the Catholic Church made the same kind of effort as the Black ministers -- (only in this case to get their congregation to vote for Pro-live candidates), think of all the lives that would have been saved.

Lungren, who is a good Catholic lost the governorship to a Catholic, who ignored the Church's teachings on the killing of unborn babies, just to get votes. In plain English -- Davis was rewarded by the Catholic Church by their silence, thus insuring that the killing of unborn babies will be proliferated. Lungren a devout Catholic, was hung out to dry by the Catholic Church, thus denying him opportunities to fight for Pro-life legislation, especially Partial-birth abortions.

There are pro-abortion professors teaching theology in our Catholic Universities. Not only are they teaching, but they are pushing their views on the students. Is it any wonder that more Catholics, voted for pro-abortion candidates, than Evangelical Christians? We send our children to Catholic grade and high schools, only to have their minds exposed to pro-abortion views.

One such person is Daniel C. Maguire, who teaches several freshman sections of, "Theology and Morals" at Marquette. He has been neither excommunicated nor removed from his tenured position -- although the Vatican issued a 49-page document in September 1990 - Ex corde Ecclesia charging universities to be more accountable for what they teach. Bishops have a "right and a duty," the document states, "to watch over" universities in their dioceses.

According to records filed with the IRS, Catholics For a Free Choice, of Washington, DC, has received thousands of dollars from the Playboy Foundation, which deals in pornography. Maguire is on the board of directors of Catholics For a Free Choice which is no more Catholic than Playboy! Here are quotes from one of Maguire's articles: "If you are concerned about the possibility that the fetus might experience pain you need to balance that concern ... Physical and emotional pain occur in all our lives. It is not the determining fact in making a moral decision about abortion or anything else."

Better to kill your unborn child than "ignore the needs and rights of other persons, your husband and children," Maguire says. Besides, the "possibility" that the fetus might be a person, pales in light of the fact that you definitely are. "Think about the relative value of your life versus that of the fetus.... many good religious people believe that the woman has to welcome the life in her womb and consent to the pregnancy, before God considers it a human person ... when the woman consents to the pregnancy ... God then infuses a soul into the body."

Have you ever read such insidious garbage?!? And he teaches at a Catholic university. If you want his whole article -- let me know at

Next week I will continue with this same thread, detailing how some within the Church in America are undermining the pro-life movement and, through their words and actions, not worthy to be called Catholic. I will expose the lies they are spewing and I will continue pleading for all Catholics, regardless of political affiliation, to campaign and vote for the pro-life candidate nationally and locally for that is the only way we can preserve not only the soul of America, but the souls of many Catholics and the lives of millions of preborn babies.

        God bless.

    Dr. Frank
