Double Feast of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, Deacon and Doctor of the Church

Missa "In medio Ecclesiae"

WHITE Vestments

Saint Ephrem, born at Nisbis in Mesopotamia of a pagan father, was cast out of his home and lived as a hermit in the desert. He never became a priest but was deacon of the Church of Edessa. From early times, because of his opposition to the Arians, he had been famed as a teacher of the Universal Church; not only the Syrians, but the Byzantines, the Slavs, the Armenians and the Copts had incorporated in their liturgical books the melodious compositions of the Deacon of Edessa, who was called in consequence by the Eastern Church the “Lyre of the Holy Spirit”. He died at Edessa in 379. In 1918, the year in which the Centenary of St. Jerome was being kept, Pope Benedict XV compared these two heroic monks of the East. On October 5, 1920, this same Pope proclaimed St. Ephrem a Doctor of the Church. He is the only Deacon honored with the title of Doctor.

Deus, qui Ecclésiam tuam beáti Ephræm Confessóris tui et Doctóris mira eruditióne et præcláris vitæ méritis illustráre voluísti: te súpplices exorámus; ut, ipso intercedénte, eam advérsus erróris et pravitátis insídias perénni tua virtúte deféndas. Per Dóminum nostrum Jesum Christum Fílium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus, Per omnia saecula saeculorum.

EPISTLE: 2 Timothy 4: 1-8
St. Paul admonishes Timothy to hold firm the sound doctrine of the Gospel. The Doctors of the Church were also renowned for their orthodoxy and their theological learning.
Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and His Kingdom. Preach the word: be instant in season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience, and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed; and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day; and not only to me, but to them also that love His coming. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL: Psalm 36: 30, 31
Os justi meditábitur sapiéntiam, et lingua ejus loquétur judícium: V. Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsíus: et non supplantabúntur gressus ejus. Allelúja, allelúja. V. (Ecclus. 45: 9) Amávit eum Dóminus, et ornávit eum: stolam glóriæ induit eum. Allelúja.
The mouth of the just man shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment. V. The law of his God is in his heart; and his steps shall not be supplanted. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ecclus. 45: 9) The Lord loved him and adorned him: he clothed with a robe of glory. Alleluia.

TRACT: Psalm 111: 1-3
Beátus vir, qui timet Dóminum: in mandátis ejus cupit nimis. V. Potens in terra erit semen ejus: generátio rectórum benedicétur. V. Glória et divítiæ in domo ejus: et justítia ejus manet in sæculum sæculi.
Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he shall delight exceedingly in His commandments. V. His seed shall be mighty upon the earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed. V. Glory and wealth shall be in his house: and his justice remaineth for ever and ever.

GOSPEL:   Matthew 5: 13-19
Like the Apostles, the Doctors of the Church are the salt of the earth and the light of the world
Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

In illo tempore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: "Vos estis sal terræ.
Laus tibi Christe.

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew. R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples,"You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain can not be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house; so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For, amen I say unto you, till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall not pass of the law till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven: but he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven."
Praise be to Christ

Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it.
