The herdsmen were fighting over pasture land. Tensions were mounting. It was obvious to Abram that it was time for him and Lot, his nephew, to separate. (Both had numerous servants, herds, and possessions.) So Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are kinsmen. Does not the whole land lie before you? Withdraw from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; or if you take the right, then I will go to the left" (Genesis 13:8-9). Lot looked about and saw that the land to the east, toward the Jordan, was very fertile, like "the garden of the Lord." Thus Lot departed and dwelt in Sodom.
But the men of Sodom and its environs were very wicked, and God resolved to destroy the city and all the neighboring towns. Abraham (for so Abram was now called by God), upon hearing this, pleaded for the cities to be spared if even 10 just men could be found. Since not even 10 just souls could be found, God rained fire and brimstone from heaven to utterly destroy those wicked cities. That area of the earth was instantly transformed from a fertile garden to the very inhospitable region of the Dead Sea. In this story we see that the fierce wrath of God was enkindled by the unspeakable wickedness of the people of Sodom, who gave their city's name to that sin which cries to heaven for vengeance.
St. Paul advises great caution when speaking of the sins of the flesh: "But immorality and every uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints" (Ephesians 5:3). While this counsel must certainly be remembered, a priest must also be concerned about the danger to morals presented by prevailing attitudes in our society. He must speak out (and write) against evil, lest the uninstructed have their faith and morals undermined by false teachings. Indeed, St. Paul himself spoke against the sin I am about to mention, warning the early Christians in the strongest terms (as we shall see) to shun the vices of their pagan countrymen. I speak here of the sin against nature, the sin of homosexuality.
The Teaching of the Church
Every effort is made today to alter the beliefs of Christians by convincing them that what they have been taught to be sinful is not necessarily so any longer. On all sides we are barraged by the various forms of the liberal media, which attempt to persuade us that certain people are born with an attraction for members of the same sex. How then, they ask, can these persons sin by following their inborn tendencies? We shall soon see this sophism for what it is, but first let us investigate the teachings of the Church.
A sin crying to Heaven for vengeance. The Catholic Church, the faithful guardian of Divine Revelation, has always upheld the condemnation of homosexuality as one of the gravest of mortal sins. Basing their teachings on Sacred Scripture, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church have consistently maintained that this sin bears a special malice. So much is this the case, that homosexual sins are referred to in a special category with three other sins as the sins "which cry to Heaven for vengeance." (The other three are willful murder, defrauding the laborer of his just wages, and the oppression of widows and orphans.) The scriptural story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha (Genesis, 19) is well known. The sins of the inhabitants of those cities did indeed cry out to Heaven for vengeance. The punishment was swift and severe.
The Evidence of Scripture
I have said that the Fathers and Doctors of the Church base their teaching on Sacred Scripture. This fact is important to keep in mind, because a common sophism in vogue today, attempting to justify the homosexual lifestyle, is the argument that there is no evidence in the Gospels that Jesus ever condemned it. Actually, there was no need for Our Lord to speak about this sin to the Jewish people, who were well aware of the harsh words of the Old Testament. Further, had He not said, "I came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill" and "not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law" etc. Let us, then, look at some of the pertinent quotations found in both the Old and New Testaments.
Old Testament quotations. In Chapter 18 of Leviticus, the Lord tells His people that they must not commit the sins of the flesh, including homosexuality, as do the pagan nations around them. After cataloguing these sins, God says: "Do not defile yourselves by any of these things by which the nations whom I am driving out of your way have defiled themselves .... You must keep my statutes and decrees forbidding all such abominations .... Everyone who does any of these abominations shall be cut off from among his people. Heed my charge, then, not to defile yourselves by observing the abominable customs that have been observed before you. I, the Lord, am your God" (Leviticus 18: 24-30). In Chapter 20 of the same book, God announces the punishment for such abominable deeds: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives" (Leviticus 20: 13).
New Testament quotations. The Apostolic writers of the New Testament are no less harsh in their condemnation of unnatural sins. In his Epistle to the Romans, St. Paul speaks of the wicked who reject the grace of God and the light of their reason. "For this cause God has given them up to shameful lusts; for their women have exchanged the natural use for that which is against nature, and in like manner the men also, having abandoned the natural use of the woman, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men doing shameless things and receiving in themselves the fitting recompense of their perversity. And as they have resolved against possessing the knowledge of God, God has given them up to a reprobate sense, so that they do what is not fitting" (Romans 1: 26-28). To the Corinthians he states: "Do not err; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor sodomites ... will possess the kingdom of God." (I Corinthians 6: 9-10). St. Jude writes: "Sodom and Gomorrha, and the neighboring cities which like them committed sins of immorality and practiced unnatural vice, have been made an example, undergoing the punishment of eternal fire" (St. Jude 7).
These quotations from the revealed Word of God make it abundantly clear how God regards this sin. Yet the permissiveness of our modern society promotes a quite different attitude. Every effort is being made to promote the "rights of homosexuals," to accept their life-style as valid, and even to condone "same-sex" marriages. I doubt there is a city of any considerable size in this country, whose streets have not been defiled by a "gay pride" parade. Many companies now offer benefits to same-sex partners of their employees. We even have a president who actively sought the support of the "gay" community, promising, before his first election, to revamp the military restrictions against them and has since carried it out.
Myths about homosexuality. What is truly tragic in all this, is that so many Americans have fallen for the lies that are drummed into our heads by the liberal media. The sophism is constantly advanced that these people cannot help the way they are. Since they are born that way, it is argued, how could it be morally wrong for them to indulge their tendencies? There are two glaring errors here. First, just because someone has a tendency does not mean he can indulge it without guilt. We have a fallen nature and are all inclined to the various capital sins to greater or lesser degrees. We are obligated to control the tendencies of our lower nature and subordinate our behavior to the Commandments of God. God's grace is never wanting to those who fight the good fight. Like St. Paul, we must chastise our bodies and bring them into subjection? We must work out our salvation in fear and trembling.
The second erroneous idea in the above statement is the notion that homosexuals are sexually biologically determined. But are homosexuals really born that way? As with evolution, this statement is advanced without serious scientific proof. The best known of two studies claiming to demonstrate a genetic connection was conducted by Dr. Simon LeVay of the Salk Institute in San Diego. After he had examined 35 male cadavers, LeVay reported that a cluster of neurons in the brain was twice as large within the brains of heterosexual males as it was in the brains of homosexuals. But there are several problems with this study. First, the sexual orientation of the 16 allegedly heterosexual cadavers was never verified. Second, all of the homosexuals involved died of AIDS, and the impact of the disease itself was never explored. Third, the findings are not consistent, as three of the heterosexuals had smaller clusters, and three of the homosexuals had larger clusters. Finally, since behavior itself is known to alter brain patterns, the size of the nodes could have resulted from, rather than instituted, homosexual behavior. (Winters, C. J. Always our Children: How Catholic Is It?). In short, there is no scientific proof for the existence of a "gay gene."
Political correctness. The gay establishment, however, has been very successful in convincing the populace that their behavior is not to be condemned. In the name of multiculturalism and diversity, every effort is made to excite sympathy and understanding for gays. Those who would oppose their lifestyle are called "homophobic," a term which implies a "fear" of homosexuals. In fact, would it not be more correct to state that we do not fear or hate these individuals but rather detest the sin of homosexuality? As Catholics, we are taught to hate the sin but love the sinner.
Societal Changes Effected by Gay Establishment
Signs of the success of the efforts of the gay establishment are abundant. It would be fatal for us to pretend to wear blinders and not be aware of the evolution taking place in our society. The carefully planned campaigns of the pro-homosexual crowd are paying off. Attitudes are changing. According to polls, the number of people who believe one is born a homosexual was only 16% in 1983. Fourteen years later the number was 31%. In 1977, 56% of Americans thought homosexuals needed protection against discrimination in the workplace. Now 80% believe that way. These numbers are bound to change even more as time goes on. How do we explain this change in thinking?
Media bias. The change in thinking of Americans is primarily due, I believe, to the influence of the media. One example of left-leaning media bias can be found in the formerly family-oriented Walt Disney Company. The entertainment conglomerate has repeatedly supported the gay agenda. I will cite just a few of the many examples that could be given. Disney has extended company health benefits to live-in partners of homosexual employees (USA Today, 10/19/95). The company annually hosts a "Gay and Lesbian Day at Walt Disney World." Company executives, including Chairman Michael Eisner, worked with Hollywood Supports, a homosexual advocacy group whose focus is to promote the gay agenda in the workplace. In September, 1997, Disney poured money into a benefit for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), a homosexual lobby group (AFA Journal, Nov./Dec., 1997). Disney's support for the homosexual agenda has been so pronounced, that the American Family Association (AFA) announced a boycott of Disney several years ago. Many other groups have joined the boycott since, such as the Southern Baptist Convention, Concerned Women for America, Focus on the Family, Catholics United for the Faith, and the Free Methodist Church, to name a few.
The media constantly promotes the myth that there is a biological basis for homosexuality. For example, in an article on Exodus International, a Christian movement to help homosexuals who wish to change, U.S. News & World Report stated: "The weight of scientific research in recent years suggests homosexuality has biological roots, with highly publicized studies suggesting that a 'gay gene' or differences in brain structure may determine sexual orientation" (July 27, 1998, p. 29). The article was referring to the aforementioned study of Dr. Simon LeVay, who claimed that autopsies showed a difference in brain structure between heterosexuals and homosexuals, thereby indicating a biological origin for sexual orientation. Despite numerous flaws in LeVay's study and questions about researcher bias (LeVay is an avowed homosexual), the media reported the studies as conclusive. But according to the Los Angeles Times, Marc Breedlove of the University of California at Berkeley produced evidence from laboratory studies on rats that suggests sexual behavior changes the human brain, not vice versa. "These findings give us proof for what we theoretically know to be the case that sexual experience can alter the structure of the brain, just as genes can alter it," stated Breedlove. "It is possible that differences in sexual behavior cause, rather than are caused by, differences in brain structure" (Los Angeles Times, 10/23/97). Despite the fact that there is no scientific evidence whatsoever to support the notion of a biological source for homosexuality, the media continue to repeat this myth.
Government support. Bill Clinton was the first American president to openly support the Gay establishment. Clinton eagerly sought the support of the gay community in his '92 and '96 campaigns. His support for gays in the military was just one of the many efforts made by Clinton to support the homosexual lifestyle [that sadly Barack Hussein Obama has brought to reality] On November 8, 1997, Clinton attended and gave the keynote address at Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) national dinner. HRC is the largest homosexual political organization in the nation. The dinner also featured actress Ellen DeGeneres, who received an award for her much-hyped "coming out" episode on the Disney/ABC sitcom Ellen in April of that year. In his speech, Clinton stated: "Moral law is evolving.... We're redefining in practical terms the immutable ideas that have guided us ... we were [in previous generations] limited in our imagination of how we should live" (NARTH Bulletin, December, 1997, p. 25).
In the same year (1997), Clinton met with a dozen representatives of the homosexual community, assuring them of his support and promising to appoint five openly gay and lesbian individuals to major administration posts. Clinton also created the position of White House liaison to the homosexual community, with salary paid for by American tax dollars. Human Events reported (8/22/97) that the Clinton administration gave $500,000 to a pro-homosexual seminar group, which teaches homosexual men to overcome the religious and moral teachings against homosexual practices that they were raised with.
In May 1998, Clinton signed an executive order that granted protected class status to all homosexual federal workers, adding sexual orientation to the list of categories protected from discrimination within the federal government. This policy has had far-reaching consequences, affecting anyone who receives a federal grant or who contracts with the federal government. When some federal agents balked at homosexual diversity training, for example, Bruce Lehman, U.S. Commissioner of Patents ant Trademarks, said, "As far as I'm concerned, it's got to be forced down their throats" (AFA Journal, July 1998, p. 9). In a letter to the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Pride Coordinators during the same month of May, President Clinton stated, "I commend each of you for your dedication to working for an America that celebrates our diversity," and he warned against "the voices of hatred and prejudice" that oppose the gay rights movement. (AFA Journal, July, 1998, p. 9).
The war against the young. Youth are particularly vulnerable to misdirection, and the gay establishment knows this only too well. Our public schools have been targeted for programs to change the thinking and habits of our young people. "Many school counselors direct confused teenagers to gay community centers to see if being gay 'feels comfortable' for them. The gay community embraces these unhappy and searching youngsters. Many of them discover a new and exciting sense of belonging in a welcoming community when they are barely into puberty. According to the reports of school counselors, even heterosexual teenagers encouraged by some AIDS Awareness Programs to find out if they enjoy sexual pleasure with males are now beginning to proclaim themselves 'bisexual'" (NARTH Bulletin. Fall, 1997).
Public Schools use the existence of harassment as a justification to introduce pro-gay programs. Referred to as "preventative programs," they affirm homosexual behavior, gay marriage, and even sexual experimentation. Some schools even speak of identifying and affirming homosexual eight or nine-year-olds. (letter of Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D.).
Similar onslaughts are under way on college campuses. Dr. Charles Socarides states that every Thanksgiving anguished parents call him because their children, in their freshman year of college, have returned home to announce that they are gay, primarily because of campus homosexual experiences fostered by their institutions in the name of open-mindedness. (Socarides, Charles. Homosexuality: A Freedom Too Far. Phoenix: Adam Margrave Books, 1995). According to a 1993 report of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, more than 45 U.S. Colleges and universities have started to offer at least one course on the homosexual experience.
Further results of gay activism. Not only has social resistance to the behavior of gays softened, but attitudes toward those who oppose homosexuality have sharpened. Take the example of CyberPatrol, the most commercially successful filtering software on the market. Like other filtering programs, CyberPatrol is sold to parents who are eager to protect their children from dangerous sites on the internet. Sites which are filtered out fall under various categories such as violence, profanity, drugs, alcohol and tobacco, sex education, pornography, Satanism, gambling, etc. But now CyberPatrol has included "intolerance" as a category of sites to be filtered. Christian web sites which disapprove of homosexuality are filtered as offensive. It is interesting to note that there was a time when CyberPatrol blocked out homosexual-related sites. But the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) complained about the policy. The result - CyberPatrol changed its policy and even installed a representative from GLAAD on its oversight committee, so as to avoid offending the gay community in the future!
Gay activism has profoundly changed our society. These activists are characterized by the same shrill, irrational voice that can be heard from the pro-abortion lobby. Even Camille Paglia (who identifies herself as a lesbian and a pagan) in her recent book Vamps and Tramps states that gay activism has become "insanely Stalinist." She states that, as a scholar, she learned to "despise gay activists for their unscrupulous disregard for the truth. Their fibs and fabrications continue, now about the still-fragmentary evidence for a genetic link to homosexuality" (Camille Paglia. Vamps and Tramps. Vintage Books, New York, 1994).
Recent Pastoral of the American 'Bishops'
In their recent pastoral letter (October 1, 1997), the American 'bishops' of the Novus Ordo Church indicate that they have fallen for the myths promoted by the homosexual establishment. While the pastoral letter contains no glaring openly-heretical statements, it is even more dangerous in its "kid glove" treatment of the subject. I will give you a few quotations from this pastoral, accompanied by my commentary. (Please keep in mind that the pastoral letter is directed to parents, especially parents of homosexual children.)
"Our message speaks of accepting yourself, your beliefs and values, your questions and all you may be struggling with at the moment."
There is no mention here of conforming their "beliefs and values, questions, etc." to Church teaching on morality.
"Adolescence is often accompanied by anxiety or confusion about sexual identity. Sometimes the best approach may be a 'wait and see' attitude, while you try to maintain a trusting relationship and provide various kinds of support, information, and encouragement."
It is incredible that the 'bishops' counsel parents to adopt a "wait and see" attitude! Children have a fallen human nature and need to be taught what is right and what is wrong. These hirelings even go so far as to tell parents:
"It is essential for you to remain open to the possibility that your son or daughter is struggling to understand and accept a basic homosexual orientation."
Yes, these conciliar 'bishops' buy into the common myth of a genetic source:
"A common opinion of experts is that there are multiple factors - genetic, hormonal, psychological - that may give rise to it." The 'bishops' state: "Some homosexual persons want to be known publicly as gay or lesbian. Though you might find the terms offensive because of political or social connotations, it is necessary to be sensitive to how your son or daughter is using them."
Are they not here conveying a false sense of human liberty?
"This implies respecting a person's freedom to choose or refuse therapy directed toward changing a homosexual orientation."
The 'bishops' state that in itself homosexual orientation "cannot be considered sinful" and that youthful experimentation with homosexuality should not alarm parents! (end note here: Real Catholicism by Winters, C.)
Official teaching of the Vatican II Church. Not only the American 'bishops', however, have bought the line that homosexuals are in no way responsible for their condition. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Novus Ordo Church teaches that homosexuality's "psychological genesis remains largely unexplained" (no. 2357). The Catechism goes on to say that gays and lesbians "do not choose their homosexual condition" (no. 2358). It is interesting to note that the "new and improved" Catechism contains 103 "adjustments" announced by the Vatican at a press conference. Among these, #2358 was removed (The Latin Mass, Chronicle of a Catholic Reform, vol. 7, No. 1, Winter 1998, p. 12).
These teachings of the Vatican II Church are readily applied by the clergy. Numerous are the instances of clergy offering masses for homosexual groups, and in other ways supporting their lifestyle. Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles even attended a fund-raising dinner (Sept., 1997) for the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries under the theme "Unconditional Love." (C. Winters).
How Do We Explain the Origin of Such Feelings
The question may then be asked, "How does one account for the sexual attractions experienced by homosexuals?" Clearly they find themselves perversely attracted to members of the same sex. We do not dispute that there are individuals with such tendencies. There seem to be two causes for this: early homosexual experiences and, especially, environmental factors. By the latter we refer to dysfunctional aspects of one's upbringing.
In their book on Gender Identity Disorder (GID), Zucker and Bradley quote a study of Stoller (1975), who described a disturbed boy's relationship with his mother. "Stoller concluded with his now-famous dictum: 'The more mother and the less father, the more femininity'" (NARTH Bulletin, August, 1996, p. 3). GID boys often have over-protective, domineering mothers. They are characterized by an avoidance of rough-and-tumble play, parental failure to discourage cross-gender behaviors, and parental (especially paternal) unavailability (NARTH Bulletin, August, 1996, p. 4). These boys fail to identify with their father. The behavior of the father leads to an alienation, the end result of which can be homosexual inclinations. Joseph Nicolosi states, "If the father is cold, detached, harsh, or even simply disinterested, the boy may reach out, but eventually will feel hurt and discouraged and surrender his natural masculine strivings, returning to his mother" (NARTH Bulletin, December, 1997, p. 2).
In his work, Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality: A New Clinical Approach, Nicolosi enlarges upon this concept: "The prehomosexual boy has typically experienced a hurt and disappointment in his relationship with father. This hurt may be the result of active abuse or simply passive neglect .... As protection against future hurt, he defensively detaches from father. Defensive detachment emotionally isolates him from other males, and from his own masculinity. Females are familiar, while males are mysterious. Then when [sexual feelings begin to be experienced] in early adolescence, it is understandable that the direction of such a young man's sexual interests will be away from the familiar and toward the unapproachable ... We are drawn to the 'other-than-me'"
Explaining the psychological problems of the homosexual, Nicolosi states: "The man who accepts the gay label in adulthood, has typically spent much of his childhood emotionally disconnected from people, particularly his male peers and his father." (NARTH Bulletin, December, 1997, p. 22). These quotations demonstrate how homosexual inclinations often develop. They do not arise from biological factors but from environmental factors, particularly within the family.
In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association officially removed homosexuality from its list of disorders. According to Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, most therapists often fail to inform the patient that reorientation therapy is, in fact, available. They "... rarely explore the possibility that the client's homosexual feelings may only be transitional, and are very quick to take it upon themselves to divest the client - often a minor - of any religious guilt conveyed by his family tradition about homosexual behavior." (NARTH Bulletin, Dec. 1995).
There exists an organization of professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, medical doctors, counselors, etc.) who refuse to accept the politically correct notion that homosexuals are unchangeable. This organization is the National Association for the Research and Treatment of Homosexuality (NARTH). Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, the founder of NARTH, has written two books on the therapeutic healing of homosexuality. Based on thousands of case studies from his clinical experience, his works offer hope to the "non-gay homosexual."
"Dr. Nicolosi shows that homosexuality is a psychosexual disorder which ranks alongside the neuroses as a serious maladjustment and which is treatable by modern methods. [In his works, Nicolosi] describes the reparative therapeutic measures which will allow such an individual to gradually assume his natural heterosexuality and achieve freedom from the confines of homosexual behavior. In so doing, he offers hope to many who previously had succumbed to despair" (Charles Socarides, M.D.). For information on NARTH or to contact a reparative therapist, one can write to: NARTH, 16542 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 416, Encino, California 91436 (818-789-4440).
Modern Attitudes Opposed to Such Therapy
Once again, however, political correctness opposes the good that is done by such therapists. Every effort is made to silence them. By their efforts members of the homosexual establishment display their clear bias. They do not want a cure - they want their life-style condoned by others. [Editor's Note: Recently in 2012, Legislation was passed by the far left Sacramento Democrats to ban this treatment for the very reasons here, though they will not admit their ulterior motives.]
All of this is having a profound impact on our society. Perhaps nowhere has the effect of the gay agenda been felt more than in the public school. "As Michael and Diane Medved write in Saving Childhood, 'by raising the issue [of homosexuality] over and over, schools cause otherwise unpressured kids to question their sexual identity.' The Medveds quote from a ninth-grade textbook that actually recommends homosexuality - for 'early teens' no less!" (The Wall Street Journal, August 13, 1998).
Punishment of anti-gay sentiment. But gay activists are not content with seeking an acceptance of their lifestyle. They want those who oppose them to be converted to their way of thinking or punished. Let me cite a few examples.
Eugene Lumpkin was a member of San Francisco's Human Rights Commission with a reputation for social justice. On June 26, 1993, the San Francisco Chronicle quoted Lumpkin as saying, "It's sad that people have AIDS ... but it says right here in the Scripture that the homosexual lifestyle is an abomination against God." He was fired from the Human Rights Commission for the remark and was unable to win back his job through the courts. His disapproval of homosexual behavior was called homophobia. His claim that he was only exercising his First Amendment right was ignored.
Ron Greer, an 18-year veteran of the Madison Fire Department in Wisconsin gave a couple of fellow firefighters and friends a tract entitled, "The Truth About Homosexuality." Greer was suspended without pay and ordered to attend diversity training in November, 1996. (AFA Journal, June, 1998, p. 20).
In Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Leo and Jackie Pike were sentenced to three years each in jail for simply displaying signs outside their home which expressed anti-gay sentiments. (AFA Journal, August, 1998, p. 10).
In Minnesota, three state employees were censured for raising religious objections to the pro-homosexual training sessions they were forced to attend. According to the Washington Times, the sessions denounced "heterosexism" - or the belief that heterosexuality is the only normal sexual orientation - as the equivalent of racism (4/6/98).
Senator Lott and Reggie White. Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) was asked by radio talk show host Armstrong Williams about homosexuality, and he declared his belief that it is a sin. Lott likened homosexuality to other compulsive behaviors such as alcoholism or stealing. Later, when asked for his opinion, Rep. Dick Armey (R-TX) agreed. "The Bible is very clear on this," he said, "I do abide by the Bible." The White House was incensed. Press secretary Mike McCurry called Lott and Armey "backward in their thinking" and "extreme." He also said that such biblical views are "incorrect."
Similar treatment was meted out to a popular and successful professional football player. Reggie White of the Philadelphia Eagles and then the Green Bay Packers (now retired) was selected to the Pro Bowl in 13 out of his 14 seasons and is considered a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. Still, his statement before the Wisconsin State Assembly in March of 1998 that homosexuality is "one of the biggest sins" in the Bible, was met with severe denunciation by writers, fans and Wisconsin legislators. CBS immediately withdrew its offer to hire White as an on-air football commentator. Campbell's Soup let White’s endorsement contract expire just days after the speech, and Nike, although maintaining White as a spokesman for its product, sought to distance itself from the player. CEO Thomas Clarke stated, "Reggie is entitled to his opinions, regardless how misguided and insensitive we believe they are." Nike chairman Philip Knight put it more bluntly: "Reggie White is in simplest terms not evil - he's just crazy." (AFA Journal, June and Sept., 1998).
[Editor's Note: Since this article was first written there have been countless others who have been termed homophobics and out of touch with society because they will not serve at the altar of tolerance and diversity.]
The Proper Catholic Attitude
Is our age any less guilty than that of Sodom and Gomorrah? We have had the Gospel and 20 centuries of Christianity. Surely the people of today shall be more harshly judged even than the inhabitants of Sodom. One is forced to wonder when God's wrath will strike. When I was in New Zealand last year (March, 1998), the papers were filled with daily updates on the disastrous power outage in Auckland, the country's largest city. Underground power cables which supplied electrical power to the large city had failed, and it took months to completely repair them. Interestingly, just days before the power failure there had been a gay pride parade through the streets of Auckland! (Could the power outage have been a divine chastisement?)
In the midst of the abominations of our age, what is a true Catholic to do? First, never approve of homosexual sin. We must maintain a firm conviction of the gravity of this sin. Second, do what you can through prayer and the works of Catholic Action to promote the truth. We must pray for God's mercy and for the conversion of the pitiful souls addicted to this vice. At the same time, do what you can to oppose wickedness and promote a knowledge of the truth. Only if enough people act for God and for truth can we hope to turn the tide of evil.
Parce, Domine, parce populo tuo!
