Commemoration the holy Abbot Saint Giles
There is a commemoration of the holy abbot Saint Giles, who was an Athenian and lived in the Sixth Century. He fled to the south of France where he lived as a hermit in a vast forest. Discovered by King Theodoric he founded a celebrated monastery in the diocese of Nimes and was so famous on account of his miracles that a number of churches were dedicated to him. His feast was kept at Rome with great solemnity with fireworks, music, races through the streets, etc. He is invoked for the cure of epilepsy and other diseases. The abbey erected in his honor was a magnificent structure and center of pilgrimage during the middle ages.
