Prayers at the Foot of the Altar

The priest (V.) bowing down at the foot of the altar, makes the Sign of the Cross - the first of 52 times during
the True Mass (to represent each week of the year) and with the Mass Server (R.) kneeling to his right, says:
V. In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
V.: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Then joining his hands in prayer before his breast, he begins the Anthem:
V. Introibo ad altare Dei.
R. Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.
V. I will go in unto the altar of God.
R. To God who giveth joy to my youth.
In Masses for the Dead and from Passion Sunday until Holy Saturday the 42nd psalter is omitted:

Psalm 43 - JUDICA ME

V. Iudica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo, et doloso erue me.
R. Quia tu es Deus fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

R. Emitte lucem tuam, et veritatem tuam: ipsa me deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum et in tabernacula tua.
R. Et introibo ad altare Dei: ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.

V. Confitebor tibi in cithara, Deus, Deus meus: quare tristis es anima mea, et quare conturbas me?
R. Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor illi: salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus.

V. Gloria Patri, et Filio et Spiritui Sancto.
R. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

V. Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation which is not holy: deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.
R. For Thou, O God, art my strength: why hast Thou cast me off? and why go I sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?

V. Send forth Thy light and Thy truth: they have conducted me and brought me unto Thy holy mount, and into Thy tabernacles.
R. And I will go into the altar of God: to God who giveth joy to my youth.

V. To Thee, O God, my God, I will give praise upon the harp; why art thou sad, O my soul, and why dost thou disquiet me?
R. Hope in God, for I will still give praise to Him: the salvation of my countenance and my God.

V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R. S. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The priest repeats the anthem:
V. Introibo ad altare Dei.
R. Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.
V. I will go in unto the altar of God.
R. To God who giveth joy to my youth.
Then the priest signs himself again with the Sign of the Cross, saying:
V. Adiutorum nostrum in nomine Domini.
R. Qui fecit coelum et terram.
V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.
R.Who made Heaven and earth.
In order to approach God we must further purify ourselves. Therefore the priest makes a public avowal, taking as his
witness the Church Triumphant and Militant and especially all the faithful present as he humbly bows his head
toward the altar and recites the CONFITEOR. After he has finished, the Mass Server responds:
R. Misereatur tui omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis tuis, perducat te ad vitam aeternam.
V. Amen.
R. May almighty God be merciful to thee, and forgiving thy sins, bring thee to everlasting life.
V. Amen.
The Mass Server, on behalf of the people prays the

Confiteor

R. Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Ioanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et tibi Pater: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, et opere:
R. I confess to almighty God, to the blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to you, Father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed:
The Mass Server strikes his breast three times as a sign of contrition
R. mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, beatum Michaelum Archangelum, beatum Ioannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et te Pater, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.
R. through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary, ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and you, Father, to pray to the Lord our God for me.
The Priest, is asking God to accept our confession, then says:
V. Miseratur vestri omnipotens Deus, et dimissis peccatis vestris, perducat vos ad vitam aeternam. R. Amen.
V. May the Almighty God be merciful unto you, and forgiving your sins, bring you to everlasting life.
R.Amen.
Public confession, like the aspersion, is a sacramental which may obtain from God the remission our venial sins.
Thus the priest signs himself with Sign of the Cross and gives us absolution the first time.
V. Indulgentium absolutionem, et remissionem peccatorum nostrorum, tribuat nobis omnipotens et misericors Dominus. R. Amen.
V. May the Almighty and Merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins.
R.Amen.
Bowing his head, he continues:
V. Deus, tu conversus vivificabis nos.
R. Et plebs tua laetabitur in te.

V. Ostende nobis Domine, misericordiam tuam.
R. Et salutare tuum da nobis.

V. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.
R. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

V. Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.

V. Oremus.
V. O God, Thou wilt turn again and quicken us.
R. And thy people shall rejoice in Thee.

V. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.
R. And grant us Thy salvation.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come before Thee.

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.

V. Let us pray.
The Priest Ascends the Altar
where he prays inaudibly a further prayer that he may be cleansed from all sin
while the Altar Server genuflects in the center and kneels on the first step on the Gospel side.
Aufer a nobis, quaesumus, Domine, iniquitates nostras: ut ad Sancta sanctorum puris mereamur mentibus introire. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

Oramus te, Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum, he kisses the altar and the altar stone containing sacred relics quorum reliquiae hic sunt, et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen.

Take away from us our iniquities, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that we may be worthy to enter with pure minds into the Holy of Holies, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

whose relics are here, and of all the Saints, he kisses the altar and the altar stone containing sacred relics that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to forgive me all my sins. Amen.

In Solemn High Masses, the altar is incensed here. While blessing the incense the Priest says:
Ab illo benedicaris, in Cujus honore cremaberis. Amen.
Be blessed by Him in Whose honor thou art burnt. Amen.
The priest signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and reads the INTROIT for the day's Holy Mass
the Proper of which can be accessed by going to PROPER OF THE MASS
After reading the Introit, the Priest returns to the center of the Altar where he says alternately with the Altar Server the nine supplications to the Father (Kyrie), to the Son (Christe), and to the Holy Ghost (Kyrie):
V. Kryie eleison.
R. Kyrie eleison.

V. Kyrie eleison.
R. Christe eleison

V. Christe eleison.
R. Christe eleison

V. Kyrie eleison.
R. Kyrie eleison.

V. Kyrie eleison.
V. Lord, have mercy.
R. Lord, have mercy.

V. Lord, have mercy.
R. Christ, have mercy.

V. Christ, have mercy.
R. Christ, have mercy.

V. Lord, have mercy.
R. Lord, have mercy.

V. Lord, have mercy.
The priest begins the GLORIA, called by the Greeks the Greater Doxology or Paraphrase of the Gloria Patri.
It begins with the words sung by the angels at the birth of our Savior and continues the supplications of the Kyrie.
Note: This is omitted during Advent, Lent and Requiem Masses.

GLORIA
Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.
Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace to men of good will. We praise Thee. We bless Thee. We adore Thee. We glorify Thee. We give Thee thanks for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Who takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Who sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For Thou only are holy. Thou only art the Lord. Thou only art most high, O Jesus Christ. Together with the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
