Remembered each day as Xystus (Xysti) in the Canon of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Pope St. Callistus I, whose feast we commemorate today, is one of the few Sovereign Pontiffs we know little of. His statue adorns the south portico ceiling in the vestibule of St. Peter's Basilica. Confounding the issue is the fact his greatest foe, St. Hippolytus was most predjudicial against Callistus especially in criticizing his purported laxity with sinners, even to calling him a heretic. The truth is that he extended forgiveness to sinners just as Christ did with the charge to 'go and sin no more.' Quite a contrast to today when sin is elevated and if you don't sin, you're targeted as the enemy in being both ostracized and persecuted. Just as Callistus persevered through many persecutions and sufferings, so we must stand firm; and hold to the traditions we have learned (cf. 2 Thessalonians 2: 14). An interesting contrast is comparing what Callistus did and today's conciliar 'popes'. The former was accused of heresy but was acquitted; the latter have proven they're heretics in apostasizing from the Church that recognized Callistus as a valid pope. There was an account in Callistus' life that a heated dispute arose over use of an oratory which Callistus had built. A group of influential Jews in Rome wanted to turn his property into a tavern. They took it all the way to the emperor Alexander Severus, who was persuaded by his Christian mother to rule in favor of Callistus with the rationale that a place of worship was better than a place that occasioned sin. Quite a contrast to today when churches are turned into bars. We can all learn from Callistus that the battle for souls and standing up to our common foes is noble and necessary.

Sermon on St. Teresa of Avila by Bishop Dolan

Prayer to St. Joseph
This Prayer to the Patron of the Universal Church was prescribed by His Holiness Pope Leo XIII to be recited after the daily Rosary during October, month of the Holy Rosary. Click here to print out the prayer.

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength.

Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen off-spring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so no defend God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.

The following 15 promises (the same number of Mysteries) were given by the Blessed Mother of God to Saint Dominic and Blessed Alan in the twelfth century. To every person who devoutly prays the Rosary, Our Lady promises:

  • 1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces.
  • 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
  • 3. The Rosary shall be powerful armor against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin and defeat heresies.
  • 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish. It will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God. It will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
  • 5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
  • 6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice. He shall not perish by an unprovided death. If he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.
  • 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
  • 8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plentitude of His graces. At the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
  • 9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
  • 10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
  • 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
  • 12. All those who propagate the holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
  • 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.
  • 14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
  • 15. Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.
  • In light of the passage of the so-called "hate crimes" bill by those intent on foisting unnatural laws on the lawful, Griff Ruby pulls no punches in addressing a sensitive subject that has spiraled out of control because of the proliferation of sin, unjustly justified by liberalism and a government out of control. Decent citizens, true Catholics, are shocked at how far society has sunk in its immoral miasma just in the last few decades where today evil is considered acceptable and proper while virtue is considered a vice that must be indoctrinated to modern times. Yes, thanks to liberalism, modernism, and satan-bar-the-door, it's become a topsy turvy world and another sign that we are in those times foretold in Sacred Scripture. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the liberality of sexuality where God's natural and supernatural laws have been shunned for the beastiality of pure lust in every form and fashion. Little do these epicurean enemies of Christ consider St. Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10 and thus society today sinks deeper into the swamp of serious sin, assuredly heading for the abyss known as hell. What then are we to do? Follow them? Hardly. Rather, return to the prudence and continency of our forefathers who held proud the faith, living it fully in obedience to holy Mother Church as the Authority Christ appointed, and setting an example for this generation that we stand firm to tradition and will gladly show the side of decency in all things whether seen or unseen. And in these times when everything is seen, not only do people need to cover their bodies, preserving them untouched, but we must all have custody of the eyes and heart. Our faith compells us so as Griff explains in The Roots of Liberalism.

We continue with the Sunday Haydock Commentary for the Epistle and Gospel. This special feature provided by John Gregory concerns the Haydock Commentary found at the bottom of each page of the Douay-Rheims Bible penned by Father George Leo Haydock. The Double of the Second Class Feast of the Divine Maternity for October 11 supersedes the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Last week, Father Haydock provided one of the keys to revealing Christ's divinity in knowing hearts and working miracles. This week he provides the proof of Our Lord's humility in subjecting Himself to His Mother Mary and step-father St. Joseph. Being the daughter of the Father, the spouse of the Holy Ghost, Mary is the Mother of the Son, thus manifesting to all through holy Scripture that she is the Mother of God - Theotokos (Θεοτόκος)and therefore due all the honor of such a title with the attributes illustrated in today's epistle from Ecclesiastes. Christ set the example of how all children should treat their parents in being obedient and respectful to the lawful Authority God granted. If Jesus could be subject to His Mother and honor her thusly then and forever after with the heavenly edicts bestowed upon her from the Cross, then lifting her up into Heaven and crowning her as Queen of Heaven and earth. If God so honored Mary thusly, should we do less? Honoring Θεοτόκος (Theotokos)

Gary L. Morella presents a sobering piece on how the flickering light of faith has almost gone dim in a world shrouded in darkness and sin. To add our comments as a preface for his article, the Last Catholic out of the Vatican, turn out the lights because the most recent praise of an antichrist truly signifies Our Lady's prophecy at La Salette that "Rome will lose the faith and become the seat of the antichrist" has been fulfilled. The Great Apostasy has been the portal for many antichrists to come forth. Just who the main one is can still be left to conjecture considering how much the world has been dumbed down to believe anything. Thanks to Vatican II, the current head in Vatican City is getting some stiff opposition from an arrogant man/beast who would be king of the world once he's dismantled the United States, which is only too evident. Ever since the early conciliar 'popes' began the sell-out practice of abdicating the Vicar of Christ's tri-regno responsibilities to souls by bowing to the UN as the answer for "social peace and justice", souls have been confused and this has only enabled the many antichrists to establish a foothold both in church and state. When will the world know the only peace possible that can come is through adherence to God's laws and submission to the only One Who can bring peace? That would be the only Light of the world: Jesus Christ. When will people learn? When it's too late? Gary warns of the consequences in his article Darkness rules the roost as Obama struts

What? you say, how can this be? Read the First Epistle of St. John 2: 15-29 and you shall see whereof this headline speaks truth and then read Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey's latest pertinent pieces at www.christorchaos.com in which he details how the conciliarists bend over backward to compliment those very men out to destroy all that Christ taught and established on earth. This is especially evident in the reaction of the radical liberal theologists in congratulating one Barack Hussein Obama for being awarded the leftist award known as the Nobel Prize, not to be confused with a Noble Prize which would be believing in Christ and carrying out what He commanded. Tom weighs in on the similarity of how today's scenario is sadly not stranger than fiction for fiction has proven true as he equates the classic (read: an excellent novel, literally and literature-wise) Lord of the World by Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson, a Catholic British author and priest at the turn of the century depicting a future apocalyptic armageddon in the mideast in a resistance effort against a One World Order in the mode of George Orwell's 1984. Obama's Marxist orientation and desire to be President of the World, aided by the reception of the now besmirched and worthless (other than the monetary value) Nobel 'Peace' Prize is a joke, but not one we should be laughing at, considering the consequences which make Benson a prophet a century or so later. Did the monsignor, like Pope Leo XIII, have a vision of what is to come, what for us is quite near? Tom lays out the signs in his three articles

Stephen Grieve hails from across the pond in England and has agreed to provide interesting articles that should stir the sensibilities of those who continue to elude the inevitability that a true pope would never and could never do what the conciliar leaders in Rome have done for the past 50 years. Stephen begins today a multi-part series on proving the basis for a sede vacante stance based on holy Scripture itself. Hard to argue with the divine Word. In his first installment he introduces the first passage that indicates such in 2 Thessalonians 2: 6-7 in which he points to the Greek root of the word for 'withholder' as it is in the Douay-Rheims version and 'restrainer' as it is in the newer versions as κατέχων. Should we be surprised considering Greek was the language of the Thessalonians and which Paul was well versed in? In his study, Stephen outlines today his thesis and begins to eliminate possibilities that could not refer to the κατέχων (o Katechon) as he narrows it down to show that the 'absence' of the 'withholder' or 'restrainer' ultimately refers to the Papacy. He explains in part one of his series "Towards a Scriptural Brief suggesting Sede Vacante" with Introduction to an Examination of 2 Thessalonians 2: 6-7

The Feast of the Holy Rosary is an occasion to bring you inspiration from the venerated Benedictine Abbot Dom Prosper Gueranger for, sadly, too many are unaware of the tremendous power of the heavenly weapon bestowed on St. Dominic Gusman for the specific purpose of putting down heresies. Since that time the Rosary has proven to be the ultimate artillery to turn back the enemy from Lepanto to Viena to countless other examples, a few of which Abbe Gueranger treats in his short essay on the Feast of the Holy Rosary which still in his time was celebrated on the First Sunday of October, but in 1913 His Holiness Pope St. Pius X set the Double of the Second Class feast for October 7, the date of the victory at Lepanto and superseding the previous feast of Our Lady of Victory. Gueranger shows how the Church in her wisdom has mapped out the liturgical year in such perfect fashion which he explained his his marvelous fifteen volume masterpiece The Liturgical Year in Volume 14, pages 295-300 which we bring you here in The Lasting Magnificence, Grace, and Power of the Holy Rosary

Griff Ruby files his second installment - in one of several series he is currently running - in which he addresses the fact that one of the problems of establishing unity within the sedevacantist movement and making a difference with strength in number for the sake of saving souls is the division of Absolute Sedevacantists and Cassiciacum Sedevacantists; the latter consisting of those who believe in the Formaliter/Materialiter status of the man who sits on the Throne of Peter. Griff dissects the arguments raised by the Society in which they have inadvertently opened their own Pandora's Box considering their giving credence to the very real possibility that both sede camps have points that not only outweigh the compromising position of the SSPX, but also prove the Society is headed down the wrong road...one leading to the conciliar cul-de-sac that provides no way out. Such a stance has led to the inevitable trap they currently find themselves in where we see mass defections as Fellay's farrago has fed mass confusion within its own ranks. Every step he takes is like quicksand, sinking him and the Society deeper. The only escape to firm footing is to embrace sedevacantism. Evidently the SSPX will have to learn the hard way before waking up to that fact. And the position of Sede Vacante itself will need to be more embraceable by being more consistent and complete within itself as Griff explains in And Now, the Other Kind of Sedevacantist .

This year the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi falls on a Sunday and thus there is only a commemoration. The humble Francis, born in 1182, was the founder of the Order of Friars Minor. Chosen by God to be a living manifestation to the world of Christ's poor and suffering life on earth, he was early inspired with a burning love of poverty and humiliation. Divine desire burned in him so mightily as to kindle a like desire in other hearts. Many joined him, and were constituted by Pope Innocent III into a Religious Order. He lived at the time when the feudal system was disappearing, and Christian democracy was dawning. St. Francis undertook to teach to this generation a spiritual language suited to its new aspirations. He led the people to devotion towards the sacred humanity and the person of the Redeemer, a devotion which has continued to increase. He set the example for clergy and people of detachment from worldly wealth and worldly honors. His reform was carried out not by rebellion, but in accord with the head of the Church. It was the papal authority, which from the first directed that overwhelming current of new life and evangelical mysticism loosed by the saint, and incorporated it in the service of the Church. For more on this man who founded the largest religious order to ever serve Holy Mother Church, see Saint Francis of Assisi

Also, see Holiness Unalloyed Inspiration for the Feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus from Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey
His Holiness Pope Pius XI canonized Mary Frances Teresa Martin on May 17, 1925 and established her feast for October 3 in the traditional liturgy. This year her feast falls on the First Saturday of the month of the Holy Rosary and it is fitting for she was known for offering roses to Christ and what better roses than the rosary, a spiritual bouquet of roses offered to Heaven. It is each small rose or Ave offered up to make a large bouquet that receives Heaven's blessing. God is pleased when we do the little things as well as we can, offering all for His honor and glory. St. Therese of the Child Jesus was made of this mold. She was born of saintly parents at Alencon (Orne) on January 2, 1873. She was educated by the Benedictine Nuns at Lisieux. After her ninth year she tried to enter the Carmelites, and put her case before the Bishop of Bayeux and Pope Leo XIII, whom she visited. At the age of fifteen she was allowed to enter the Carmel at Lisieux (April 9, 1888). She died at the age of twenty-four. There was nothing extra-ordinary about her religious life; she was perfect in her simplicity, humility, charity, her love of God and her trust in Him. She offered herself as a victim to the "merciful love of the good God." She was just a little child in the arms of Jesus. Her way of sanctity was a little way; Pius XI said: "We wish that St. Theresa's secret of sanctity should be made known to every one of our children. We have set her before the children of the Church as a striking and most precious example." Countless miracles have been wrought through her intercession. On her death bed she said: "I do not intend to remain idle in Heaven. My longing is to labor even there for the Church and souls. Our Lord will work wonders for me that will infinitely surpass my boundless desire. After my death I shall let fall a shower of roses." For more on this saint who did the ordinary things in such extraordinary ways, see Saint Therese of Lisieux

The feast of the Holy Angels reminded us that our Guardian Angels are there to help us in everything we do. That includes when you can't physically get to Holy Mass, such as for those who cannot attend Holy Mass on a daily basis, or even on Sundays because quite possibly a Traditional Latin Mass is not near. You can always send your Angel to the Holy Sacrifice on your behalf in order to join the untold choirs of Angels adoring Christ come down upon the altar. Click on the poem below that illustrates this if you want to print it out:

We have no compunction in informing you that we are running on fumes. This is our mayday alert that we desperately need your help. We have received no bailout from anyone nor do we expect such, but we do expect those who visit this site to ask themselves how they can help. We ask where are the "Good Samaritans" out there? Other than a few, and we do mean "few" loyal and regular benefactors, everyone else seems to think we can operate without donations. In the demonic despot Barack Hussein Obama's world that might work by printing up more money and taxing everyone for it, but in the real world the reality is that we dearly need everyone to pitch in and help. As Dr. Thomas Droleskey has written often on his own site, if everyone who logs on once a week sent one dollar there'd be no need to ask again. That amount - times the number of visitors per week for The DailyCatholic - would basically set us up for the year with over $25,000. just there. However, we know that won't happen considering the apathy and modernist philosophy that has seeped into society today where so many consider themselves entitled. They seem to think they can use things for free with little consideration toward those, who have not only spent many, many years in learning and intense study (not to mention costs), but also continue to labor long in time and research to provide Catholic truth and information that would, in a true republic or monarchy, be duly rewarded or reciprocated in trade in the manner that made the guilds so successful and so Catholic. Did Our Lord not say, "a laborer is worthy of his hire" in St. Luke 10: 7? What say you? Won't you help us in our mission for saving souls?
