Double Feast of Saint Ambrose , Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church

Also Vigil of the Immaculate Conception

Day of Fast and Abstinence

WHITE Vestments

Saint Ambrose, a doctor or teacher of the Church, was Archbishop of Milan from A.D. 374 to his death in 397. By his steadfastness he deserved well of God's people. Gentleness, meekness, humility, and obedience made him yield to every one in indifferent matters, but in those of duty he was inflexible. His writings have contributed many hymns and lections to the Roman Breviary. St. Ambrose died April 1, 397; but the fourth of April falling as a rule in Lent, the seventh of December, anniversary of his consecration as bishop, was assigned for his festival which is also the Vigil of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To add to the solemnity of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Lady, Pope Leo XIII in 1879 extended this vigil to the Universal Church.

    EPISTLE: 2 Timothy 4: 1-8
Deo Gratias.
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and His Kingdom. Preach the word: be instant in season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience, and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed; and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day; and not only to me, but to them also that love His coming. Thanks be to God.

    GRADUAL: Eccles. 44: 16
Ecce sacérdos magnus, qui in diébus suis plácuìt Deo. V. (Ecclus. V. (Ps. 109: 4) Tu es sacérdos in ætérnum, secúndum órdinem Melchísedech. Allelúja.
Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God. V. (Ecclus. 44: 20) There was not any found like to him, who kept the law of the Most High. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ps. 109: 4) Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

    GOSPEL:   Matthew 5: 13-19
    Dominus vobiscum.
    R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
    Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum
    R.Gloria tibi, Domine

In illo tempore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: "Vos estis sal terræ.
    Laus tibi Christe.

    The Lord be with you.
    R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
    R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples,"You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain can not be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house; so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For, amen I say unto you, till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall not pass of the law till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven: but he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven."
    Praise be to Christ

Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:
    HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
