The liturgy shows us that our misfortunes are caused by our unfaithfulness in conforming to the will of God. Let us beseech the Lord, through the prayers of Holy Church, to pardon our sins, so that we may serve Him with a quiet and trustful heart, always obeying His precepts.
Today's Mass makes us own that our misfortunes are caused by our unfaithfulness in conforming to the divine will (Introit, Epistle). Therefore, in the same way as the people of Israel when in exile lamented their sins and prayed that God's mercy should be manifested in their favor (Introit, Offertory), so the Christian people ask the Lord, through the prayers of His Spouse, the Church, to pardon their sins so that they may serve Him with a tranquil heart (Collect),by always obeying His commandments (Postcommunion).
All, filled with the Holy Ghost Who must fix our attention during the season following Pentecost, are gathered together in the temple and take a part in the ceremonies of worship (Epistle). They raise to the Lord their eyes full of hope and sing canticles to His glory (Gradual; Alleluia), for in Him alone do they put their trust (Communion).
 There is a commemoration today of the holy martyr Pope Saint Callistus I. He is also called Callixtus and succeeded Pope St. Zephyrinus. The institution of the ember day fasts is ascribed to him. He suffered martyrdom under Emperor Alexander Severus, October 14, 223. He was a staunch defender of the unity of the Divine Essence. He offered absolution to even the greatest sinner who should have performed the canonical penances. He is remembered in the Canon of the Mass.
