Carol Marin, a well-known and highly awarded Chicago-based journalist, claims to be a practicing Catholic. Like the vast majority of media types, however, this woman embraces and defends every liberal serving that was ever sent down the food line at Catholic Cafeteria, that mythical-yet-all-too-real lunch stop for most of this nation's clueless Catholics. Her articles read like position pieces for The Democratic Party of death. In fact, the more I investigated her background, I realized that she should receive yet another recognition...Poster Child for American Catholic Ills 2006.
Underpinning much of Marin's political and religious positions as evidenced by her various writings is a clear humanism served under the guise of inclusive, compassionate open-mindedness. In her attack of The American Life League's ad against Dick Durbin's support for abortion contrary to Catholic teaching, Marin warns pro-lifers not to judge lest they be judged, adding her name to the list of usually liberal fools who misquote this passage in Matthew 7:1-5 as a mantra for their tolerance trash.
In that piece Marin attacks "the willingness on the part of The American Life League to take it upon themselves to decide if Durbin is, in fact, "Catholic" or entitled to receive Communion." She adds, "Exactly what kind of true believers are so bereft of humility, charity, or self-doubt that they can presume to look into someone else's soul?" This drivel is nothing more than humanistic rubble served on a pretend Catholic plate! It accommodates the kind of moral relativism and politically correct moral cowardice that is eviscerating the American 'Catholic' Church today.
Like so many moral imbeciles of her ilk, Marin misquotes Christ's warnings against unrighteous, hypocritical judgments as warnings against judgments of any kind. If one followed this woman's absurd position to its logical position, then one could not possibly ever speak in judgment against anyone since, after all, none of us can look into anyone's soul, right? However, as often happens with the babble of the ignorant, their own hypocrisy brings them to their knees soon enough!
Marin speaks with indignation about The American Life League's ability to openly and publicly judge Dick Durbin by placing an ad that read "Senator Durbin, You can't be Catholic and pro-abortion" yet she vehemently attacked her news station when they hired trash talk show host Jerry Springer to make some commentary and quit in response.
Speaking on the local public television program Chicago Tonight and in The Chicago Tribune, Marin stated, "Just saying Jerry Springer's name is a statement of the kind of television that descends to the lowest rung." Providing guest commentary in The Chicago Sun-Times, Marin lamented that journalists "in the trenches" already have to deal with too much sensationalism and "now we see Springer, the poster child for the worst television has to offer, being added to the 10pm news menu".
Now, Ms. Marin, who are you to "judge lest ye be judged"? I mean, exactly what kind of true believer is so bereft of humility, charity, or self-doubt that they can presume to look into someone else's soul"? Now you may say that you are not pretending to look into the soul of Jerry Springer but merely speaking regarding his actions in contradiction of the supposed mission and integrity of journalism, which ideally but not realistically, is to objectively and professionally report the news. Well, guess what Madame Hypocrisy, The American Life League was not pretending to look into the soul of Dick Durbin but merely speaking regarding his actions in contradiction of the supposed mission and integrity of the Catholic Church to which you dare to pretend you likewise adhere!
In fact, one critic compared Marin to Springer and found both "have a tendency to indulge themselves in self-righteous moralizing. Both delight in taking on easy targets." For an alleged Catholic who is regarded as publicly self-righteous to promote her own image to attack an organization that is publicly critical to defend true Catholic teaching is truly as vile and hypocritical as one can get!
Betrayal of True Catholic Teaching
Carol Marin has attacked pro-life forces while babbling the familiar liberal trash about abortion being such a tragedy. She has characterized traditional religious positions as polarizing and divisive. She has written admiringly about feminism and radical environmentalism. She has written favorably about John Kerry, another false Catholic and defender of baby killing, calling him a "hero".
Carol Marin is about as Catholic as Osama Bin Laden! She defends Dick Durbin and John Kerry's brand of Catholicism because she practices that kind herself, plain and simple. The problem is that people like Durbin, Kerry, Kennedy, Granholm, Sebellius, Pelosi, Giuliani, Pataki, and Marin have a public position whereby they can influence, confuse, and distort Catholic teaching even more. The pathetic reality that there are actually Catholics out there so clueless as to look to the above fools for moral guidance is a tragedy in itself!
At various times in her career, Marin has worked with CBS News and its show 60 Minutes which has often attacked Catholic teaching. I guess there is no problem working with and for people who attack your faith if you do the same by your own betrayal of that faith's true teaching.
Marin has been honored by many news organizations with awards citing her journalistic integrity and respect for the truth and objective reporting but, as one would expect from honors given by the liberal media, her biased reporting against core traditional religious positions and in favor of liberal views belies integrity and objectivity.
Simply put, the liberal media's version of integrity and objectivity is usually quite biased against faith so being honored by them is almost a certification of that very same bias.
Marin has also been lauded by Loyola University, another one of those pretend Catholic institutions that support dissidence and criticism of traditional Catholic doctrine. She recently spoke there about "ethical issues in the news". I am devastated that I did not attend that nugget of wisdom where I could have witnessed Marin tell her listeners about objectivity and loyalty to one's alleged identity.
Might even have been approached by one of the students to buy a ticket to the "V Monologues" playing there later this month as it is on so many so-called 'Catholic' campuses.
Most recently, Marin mocked President Bush for not seeing Brokeback Mountain, wondering if this is not just another example of his intolerance and narrow world view. In that article she joked that Bush could improve his popularity numbers by seeing the movie and that his administration has too often tried to "frighten us with the idea that gay couples might somehow erode our values and ruin our culture." She cited some biased testimony about the movie's supposed popularity as evidence that America has no problem with "two men who love each other", citing the film's 51 million dollar box office numbers as some impressive figure. I would challenge those numbers for liberals are notorious for inflating figures. The last I heard it was bombing at the Box Office. Perhaps she was talking about the cost to produce such tripe. I am pretty sure that Marin was not similarly impressed and supportive of Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ! which truly was a box-office smash in red and blue states and overseas.
Meanwhile, she admires John Kerry as a "war hero" while admitting that he was a lousy candidate. I wonder if Marin ever publicly advised Kerry to see The Passion of The Christ, which has international gross earnings of well over 600 million which, if my math is correct, is 12 times plus what Brokeback has earned, and notice I use the word "earned" with facitiousness. I mean, if Marin thinks that Bush would be politically well-advised to see a movie that glorifies homosexuality would she not also think that Kerry, Durbin and company would have been well-advised to see Mel's masterpiece that could possibly have awakened them from their morose state of mortal sin and touch their heart to seek forgiveness? I will guess that Marin never did this since liberals, including liberal make-believe Catholic journalists like Marin, were not too keen on Mel's film. It wasn't fashionable with her peers.
Marin has also stated that "you need to hear the people you don't like..to question them because if you don't know who they are, how are you making the judgment?" Given this noble view, I would ask Marin if she has bothered to write an article explaining the positions and views of pro-life people or groups such as Exodus International, the largest evangelical network of former homosexuals in the world, which receives 400,000 inquiries every year from people affected by unwanted homosexuality who are struggling to free themselves from the propaganda and brainwashing of pro-homosexual groups that falsely paint homosexuality as a permanent trait like race. People such as Exodus President Alan Chambers cite just how dangerous an insidious film like Brokeback Mountain really is since it pushes that permanent claim while glorifying homosexuality and depicting it, in classic liberal style, as a group victimized by societal intolerance and ignorance. I guess Marin never got around to writing about these people because, like any good American 'Catholic', she was too busy singing the film's praises and mocking Bush for not seeing this cinematic gem!
In addition to all of the above examples that make Carol Marin the classic poster child for clueless American Catholicism, I wish to add one more. In wondering why pro-life forces bother Dick Durbin on his voting record, Marin wrote in disgust, "For some reason, abortion has become the defining issue of American politics, eclipsing many other wrenching issues that speak of the human condition" Perhaps Marin should consider that murdering innocent, unborn children is slightly more heinous, detestable, and vile than feeding the hungry, helping the poor, and cleaning a pond. While nobody is claiming that poverty, social injustice, crime, and pollution are no evils as well, only an imbecile or a radical liberal (excuse the redundancy) would pretend that murder is morally equal to these other evils. The fools who support this notion do so by conveniently pretending that abortion is not murder and that it is just one more peg on the morality pool alongside mercury intoxication, unemployment, pollution, and gun control. This notion is called proportionalism and it is the kind of trash that allowed Democrats to claim that Kerry was the most Catholic senator in our government.
Although not as obvious as the other issues, Carol Marin's articles on Bush and Brokeback Mountain and attacking pro-life forces also point out what happens when you have a pathetic, ineffective, cowardly and compromised leadership in the American 'Catholic' Church. If these clerics had the guts or the moral authority to firmly and assertively denounce Catholic politicians and public figures such as Marin when they act or express in contradiction of true Catholic doctrine and teaching, we would have a lot less of this kind of drivel than we do now. As it is, many of these so-called shepherds are either spineless sheep or foxes instead. God will judge them, but who can deny that they have innocent blood and the eternal fates of many souls in their hands as they go about either wimping out on strongly asserting Church teaching or destroying their moral integrity through their own vice? It is clear that these church leaders seem to care more about keeping the Democratic party alive than demanding that anyone follow Church teaching and doctrine.
Her bishop Cardinal Francis George is back pedaling over the sex-abuse scandals that continue to overflow ugly in every diocese, especially the archdioceses. One of George's own has called for his resignation and he did so from the pulpit! Meanwhile Marin plods on blindly. To show you how callous and clueless these people are, I sent a letter to Marin about what I'm writing and received a reply - a standard form letter with her signature. She sent a reply, "Many thanks." Evidently she agrees with everything I said, but won't, as typical of those already in satan's camp, do a thing about it.
Carol Marin represents the very worst in American Catholicism. She embodies the kind of humanistic and hypocritical distortion of the true Catholic faith that has made American Catholics a joke among the right assuming they can even pretend to be anywhere near the right at this time. She calls herself a Catholic while promoting and defending positions completely inconsistent with true Catholic doctrine. She mocks President Bush while pretending that Brokeback Mountain has any positive contribution to this society's ultimate moral and cultural survival. She attacks organizations that defend life as being judgmental and intolerant even as she publicly judges others. She calls Jerry Springer a poster child for trash journalism even as she is a clear poster child for trash Catholicism.
Marin has stated that reporters should hold politicians accountable for their promises and actions but attacks a pro-life organization for holding those very same politicians morally accountable for their public actions. Given the vast amount of material by which Carol Marin exposes her brand of clueless Catholicism in her own words, we may best close with her statement that "the best thing we can do in this business is to decide who we are in it" I would venture to say that Carol Marin has decided that her role in the news business is that of pretend Catholic and typical liberal hypocrite, not to mention classic poster child for precisely why the American Catholic Church is increasingly becoming a moral and doctrinal disaster.
