       The three Sundays preceding Ash Wednesday are called SEPTUAGESIMA, SEXAGESIMA and QUINQUAGESIMA, which mean, respectively, the seventieth, sixtieth, and fiftieth day, that is, before Easter. They are mere names to correspond with the name of Lent (Quadragesima in Latin: fortieth); obviously they do not actually correspond with the period they indicate.

       Man, victim of the sin of Adam and of his own sins, is justly afflicted; groans and sorrows encompass him.

       On these Sundays the Gloria in excelsis and Alleluia are omitted, except when the Mass of a Feast is said, and purple vestments are used.

       Septuagesima Sunday supersedes the Double Feast of Saint John of Matha, Confessor and Religious Founder. Normally the Mass for this day would be that of a Confessor not a Bishop - Os justi. He was born in Provence and from his earliest childhood distinguished himself by his charity to the poor. Ordained a priest in Paris, he, at his first Mass, had a vision in which God commanded him to establish the Order of the Holy Trinity for the ransoming of captives and, with St. Felix Valois approached Pope Innocent III, who gave his approbation to the new institution commanded by God.

       Thanks to the abundant alms obtained from the kings and princes of France and Spain, he was enabled to ransom a large number of Christian fallen into the hands of infidels. He died in 1213.

       There were seven concilors of Florence who founded the Servants of Mary or Servites in 1233. The best known were Saint Buonfiglio dei Monaldi and Saint Alessio de' Falconieri, who served as a lay brother all his life.The other five were also from influential families in Florence and were all members of the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through this association, they grew spiritually and longed for something more. Thus, under the direction and advice of their bishop, the majority became priests, forming the Servants of Mary or Servites.

       They adopted the Rule of Saint Augustine, wore black cassocks and strove to emulate the mendicant friars like the Franciscans and Dominicans. Their Order was officially approved by Pope Innocent IV in 1259; canonically approved by Blessed Pope Benedict XI in 1304; and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. Their feast is celebrated in Church Liturgy on February 17th. There was also a contemplative order of Servite nuns founded by two penitents of Saint Philip Benezi and a Third Order of nuns dedicating to treating the poor and sick as well as educating children. This was founded by a relative of St. Alessio's, Saint Juliana Falconieri in 1306.

NOTE: From Septuagesima to Ash Wednesday the Tract is said only on Sundays and Feast Days. On Ferias when the Mass of the Sunday is said, the Gradual is said without the Tract or Alleluia.
