Terri's Passion |
It is no coincidence of the parallels between Our Lord's Passion and Terri Schiavo's. In both cases there is so much at stake for the sake of society's soul.
"...just as Our Lord was stripped of His garments and nailed to a Cross, so too Terri has been stripped of her humanity, freedom, right to life, and dignity and nailed to her bed. So also has our rights as American citizens for the Constitution of the United States has been stripped of any meaning for no longer can we rely on 'the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.'"
I do not believe that it is a mere coincidence that Theresa Marie Kathleen "Terri" Schinlder-Schiavo's life hangs in the balance as we approach Holy Week. Is not this young woman's ordeal very much her own personal passion play? Is this whole mess not simply a battle between innocence and evil, faith and unGodliness, and service versus selfishness? Is this not gross injustice dressed up as "justice"? All indications point to Terri's situation as a very real reverence point from which we can both offer thanks to God for our own good fortune and many blessings.
Betrayal, Judgment, Condemnation, and Crosses
Just as Our Lord was betrayed by one so close to Him, has not Terri been likewise betrayed by her supposed life partner? Just as Christ was betrayed by cowardly authorities more concerned with appearances, popularity, and self-interests, so too Terri has been betrayed by authorities whose oaths in speech and stone are mere lint blowing in the wind. Just as these authorities "judged" Christ based on trumped-up charges and pure lies, so too our legal, medical, and media institutions judge Terri and those on her side based on twisted, biased, and incomplete evidence and reporting of that evidence. Just as authorities attempted to twist their communications to society to depict Christ more as a prince of fools than a Prince of peace, so too our biased media outlets attempt to spin their perceptions and observations contrary to the true, relevant facts to make such views "intolerant", "insensitive" and "divisive." Just as the Jewish leaders hands were bloodied with rationalized and arrogant maneuvers depicted as nobility but really meant to rid them of Christ so too medical authorities have hands bloodied with the sin of Euthanasia and rationalized, arrogant strategies depicted as noble mercy but really meant to rid them of a bothersome patient. Just as authorities dressed intrusions into God's authority over justice and life as practicality amid Roman rule, so too present authorities dress their intrusion into God's domain as practical mercy and concern. Just as Christ was condemned to death by the acts and failure to act of cowardly, evil authority, so too Terri has been condemned to death by cowards and despicable ghouls. Finally, just as Christ was handed His cross over already greatly burdened shoulders, so too Terri Schiavo has been handed her cross despite already burdened by illness and frustration.
Hand Washing and Hand-wringing
Just as Pontius Pilate foolishly believed that a mere hand washing would relieve him of the guilt of injustice on innocence, so too this society's hand wringing and rationalizations will serve no purpose beyond proving how pathetic, superficial, and tragic its fall has been. Just as satan slithered through the crowd, stirring them into a militant frenzy, which was so brilliantly depicted in Mel Gibson's masterpiece The Passion of The Christ, so also the politicians from the State level to U.S. Congress, are afflicted by the half-truths of the evil one. This also holds true for all higher courts who have cowardly forfeited their right and duty to override a lower court; one which has shown a definite prejudice in favor of those favoring Euthanasia despite overwhelming evidence medically, constitutionally and spiritually that this is outright murder!
Please tell me how both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate could both pass bills that would help save Terri's life, but because they were different bills, they cannot be ratified for another month because our precious elected are on spring recess - read, "Easter vacation." Life and death to them means getting that reservation on the beach to lay on the sand, while Terri is starved to death parched and grimacing - akin to being stranded on the sands of the Sahara left to the vultures of Euthanasia and the culture of death. When it came time to draw that line in the sand, they drew two lines, leaving Terri stranded in no man's land, save for God's mercy. After all, we can't be too hard on our congressmen and senators, they just had to put priorities first; such as grilling mega-million dollar baseball players about steroids. Mustn't put anything in our bodies, even, by their incompetence of confusing the bills, a life-saving feeding tube.
Falls and Assistance
Just as Our Lord fell and rose on His journey to Calvary, so too Terri Schiavo's ordeal has seen rises and falls as rulings and actions in her favor collided. This last one even more painful and wrenching since it would have stopped the madness of the corrupt judicial system which arrogantly and stubbornly resists any logic or justice. Talk about an oxymoron; or is that moron in referring to the hostile action by Judge George Greer. Is he the only one who doesn't understand the situation? Kind of like appointing Mickey Mouse to rid the room of rats. And is he not the biggest rat of all? Did not Our Lord say in Mark 12: 48, "And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more."? God and man demand more from a judge, much more.
Just as Simon the Cyrenean was brought in to help Our Lord, so too many people have assisted Terri on her path as well, directly or indirectly. From the throng of Christian leaders and followers amassing outside the Hospice where Terri has been held prisoner for nearly five years to those politicians whose hands are tied by the Party of Death - the Democrats both through the endless filibusters and grandstanding, and the quick exit of the donkies from the beltway before seeing Terri's Bill to conclusion, to vigilante heroes like General Bo Gritz, a former Green Beret who, though eccentric, sincerely believes in the oath he took to defend America against enemies "foreign and domestic." Greer and her faithless estranged unfaithful husband Michael Schiavo are definitely "domestic enemies" violating the Constitution of the United States, not to mention God's infallible law. It is called the Fifth Commandment and it says "Thou Shalt Not Kill."
Mother, Veronicas, and Consolation
Just as Our Lord faced His Blessed Mother Mary's loving touch and face, so too Terri has reacted to her own mother Mary Schindler's loving touch and words. It is no coincidence that Our Lady's name permeates the Schindler ladies. Terri, whose baptismal name was Theresa Marie, has two Mothers named Mary. With that kind of Catholic commitment, I just know the Comforter of the Afflicted will not abandon the Schindlers. Both Marys are sorrowful, for Terri's death sentence was scheduled yesterday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on the feast no less of the Seven Sorrows of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Mary Schindler, as well as her husband and Terri's father Robert and their son and Terri's brother Robert, Jr. have truly experienced the swords of pain in doing all that is humanly possible to save their own flesh and blood.
Just as Saint Veronica wiped the sweat, blood, and dirt from Our Lord's Divine Face, so too many have tried to relieve Terri's condition at least momentarily. Just as Our Lord's image was imprinted on Veronica's veil, so too Terri's image has been imprinted on the hearts, minds, and souls of those praying and working for her cause everywhere. Thanks to the internet, word has spread like the gentle wind of the Holy Ghost to penetrate the media blackout and misinformation being disseminated.
Finally, just as Our Lord consoled the weeping women, so too Terri's struggle may be tempered by the knowledge that her cause is right and just and that the enemy is evil, wrong, and ever-present. Likewise, as Christ told those women to weep for their children, Terri's situation calls for us to weep more for our society and our children who will live in such a society where innocence faces death at the altar of convenience, arrogance, and selfishness daily.
Stripped and Nailed
Just as Our Lord was stripped of His garments and nailed to a Cross, so too Terri has been stripped of her humanity, freedom, right to life, and dignity and nailed to her bed. So also has our rights as American citizens for the Constitution of the United States has been stripped of any meaning for no longer can we rely on "the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
Just as Our Lord made the ultimate sacrifice to honor God's Will and fulfill His mission of salvation, so too Terri has a mission, a purpose to her suffering and ordeal. Ultimately, her death will stand as both a symbol of this society's depravity and a warning of where this culture of death is headed. Just as Christ and His Cross stand as reminders of what evil we are capable of and what we have to do to save ourselves, so too Terri's situation reminds us of how low we can go as a society and how far we have strayed from Christ's path to salvation. Woe is us. The Almighty Father will have His vengence on those who oppress His little ones. There is always hope for His Divine Son asserted in His Beatitudes:
"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice sake: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you untruly, for My sake; rejoice and be exceeding glad, for your reward is very great in Heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets, that were before you" (Matthew 5: 5-12).
Our Lord's Passion is the ultimate masterpiece of sacrificial love and redemption, but our society has provided us with three lesser examples of such Passion. First, true Catholics are regularly unjustly depicted, accused, condemned, and judged by an evil society out to destroy them. Likewise, the innocent unborn and people like Terri Schiavo are unjustly depicted, accused, condemned, judged, and murdered by an evil authority out to destroy them and usurp authority from God over life and death. That any society like this one can ever claim to be acting for justice or moral authority in murdering the innocent is beyond reason. Second, true Catholics, the unborn, and the vulnerable like Terri are burdened by crosses allowed by God by which we may all glorify His Name and serve His purposes. Lastly, the sacrifice of Christ, of true Catholics, of the unborn, and of Terri Schiavo proves to be the spark by which a loving and merciful God brings about miracles. Let us pray that Terri's passion will awaken a society's own moral coma.
