Identifying the Real Weapons of Mass Destruction in American Catholic Homes
Part Twelve of
CATHOLIC IDENTITY CRISIS IN THE USA
While the liberal media and progressivists continue their wild-goose chase looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction, millions upon millions of souls are being wiped out by the worst WMD possible. Truly Our Lord's words should be a wake-up call to all: "And fear not them that kill the body, and cannot kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell."
"There are devices in our homes that can be controlled from great distances, that can cause immediate and long-term damage, and that can do this harm over large areas. In fact, many end times observers argue that these devices already control us and will be soon used to control us even more directly. Many of these observers argue that these devices will soon be used to spy on us, to monitor us, and to directly influence us in many ways. Hearing these observers, one would imagine an evil hypnotist lurking in our homes ready to lure us into various trances and also conveying our private life to some greater, sinister authority. By now it should be obvious that these WMD in our homes are our television sets and computers."
Much of the rhetoric and hype concerning Iraq has centered on the search for Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). The liberal media has mocked that search and its application as the pretext for starting a war many feel was unjustified or unwarranted. No matter what the truth is regarding that issue, there is an even greater truth sitting right before our clueless noses. The true weapons of mass destruction are not found somewhere in Iraq or hidden in the Middle East. They are found in our homes!
What is a Weapon of Mass Destruction?
Although there are various definitions and perceptions of just exactly what a WMD is or is not, we can generally conclude that a WMD is any tool or device that can inflict wide-spread harm, destruction, death, and suffering in minimal applications or uses and not requiring proximity by the agent of that destruction. While a gun or rifle can cause great harm, it cannot usually kill many with one use. While a suicide bomber can cause great harm, he or she is usually present and included in that harm hence the term "suicide" bomber. This leaves us with such things as conventional bombs, chemical bombs, biological weapons, and the like. Such devices can inflict great harm in one use and do not require the harming agent to be present at the scene. Certainly WMD have existed for some time now and are not limited to the past few years, but the term has become popular now with reference to the increased chemical and biological applications of such devices.
Taken in this context, we can add the notion that true, modern WMD seem to have the capability of not only causing great, widespread harm from a distance, but can also create a harm which itself perpetuates beyond the site of the direct application.
The more extensive that possible perpetuation, the more applicable the use of the term WMD. Taken in this context, it is easy to see why a small bomb is less of a WMD than a larger bomb which is less of a WMD than a nuclear bomb whose initial impact is supplemented by remaining radioactive harm. Since nuclear, chemical, and biological bombs can follow immediate, direct, physical destruction with later slow-term harm through radiation, chemical contamination, or biological harm, we can say that true WMD harm in both the short- and long-term and are thus even more dangerous.
What WMD Are Found in Our Homes?
There are devices in our homes that can be controlled from great distances, that can cause immediate and long-term damage, and that can do this harm over large areas. By now it should be obvious that these WMD in our homes are our television sets and computers.
Short and Long Term Harm
It should be clear by now that televisions and computers can bring us great benefits and opportunities to learn and grow, but they can also invite great evil and sin into our homes. Improper programs, pornography, materialism, disrespect, propaganda, and invasion of privacy are just some of the great harms that these devices bring into the home. These short-term, immediate harms can spread to greater long-term changes in attitudes, morality, conscience, and perspectives. Certainly there are many studies suggesting that murder and evil become more acceptable and can be more rationalized with constant exposure on television and in computer applications. Surely this is true of how pornography and immmoral standards have gained such a foothold. Like a silent chemical or virus spreading and slowly killing our bodies, the influences of these devices slowly and silently kill our souls as well.
Need for Constant Vigilance and Discipline
Given all of the dangers and potential harm of televisions and computers, we need to maintain a constant vigilance and discipline regarding their use in our homes. If end-times observers are right and we begin to perceive that such use increasingly becomes incompatible or impossible to reconcile with true Catholic values or seems to be increasingly creating evil in our homes, then we must be prepared to cease such use to the extent necessary. Even if that means doing the unthinkable in the minds of Americans dumbed down by this replacement for so many values: turn it off and discard your televisions. It is ironic that just as our society cries in anger or revenge against those who would kill 4,000 innocent people in one day while remaining silent as 4,000 innocent unborn are killed every day, so too many warn of WMD while enjoying and using WMD in their own homes!
Even worse, those guardians that should have been protecting us: the Church and parents were routinely programmed to accept what was the norm and to be excited about innovations. Nowhere is innovation and change more prevalent than in the world of television and, over the past ten years mushrooming at break-neck speed on the worldwide web. Parents today say helplessly, "we didn't know" or "we didn't realize." American parents are dumbfounded for they were left to their own, abandoned by a church eager to please man and this humanism has produced a dangerous stage where WMDs are everywhere and few can or want to go the the drastic measures to defuse these time bombs. I say time bombs because over time they become more potent and far more dangerous for that very reason - most do not realize still how deadly these WMDs are. In truth, they have become the tabernacle of the devil while the true tabernacle is consigned to a closet. God is a second thought. Man rules because his emotions are governed by the 300 plus stations on his satellite and all the chatrooms on his desktop. Modernism has never been so modern, so deadly!
