The Bane of Atheism

by
Father James F. Wathen

Atheism, masked in the inklike blackness of progressive, modernist democracy, stretches its tentacles over every facet of life and culture in trying to eliminate the existence of God. It can't be done and that frustrates the nihilists all the more as they try to crush souls and spirits with their insane, but dangerous nonsense that is playing right into the hands of the devil.

"If we begin to recount the crimes of atheistic governments, we shall never come to an end. For example, as the most powerful nation on earth, which, under the shibboleth of 'separation of church and state,' has shown itself to be indifferent to and defiant of God, His Son, and His Church, the United States of America presents itself to the world as a prime example of an imperial power which has arrogated to itself the place of God in judging and punishing nations, while it progressively plunders and oppresses its own citizenry. Steeped in hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and audacity, it declares itself the world’s policeman and deliverer, while it stretches its tentacles into one country after another in the form of computer generated money and horrendous weaponry. In the clutches of its pietistic ravages, its victims warn their neighbors, 'Woe to the nation America comes to save!'"

As I have observed many times before, atheism is the dominant philosophy of life of the modern Western World, and practical atheism is its code of morality, which is no morality at all. Atheism denies that there is a God, and practical atheism is the moral behavior of those who either do not believe in God or that there is any reason to fear Him. We live in a population which, to a large extent, live as if there were no God.

Atheists are militant. They employ every means and argument to promote the "death of God," and that with brazen arrogance. And they have been very successful in swaying "the masses," especially since, in the intellectual arena, Protestantism is hopeless malaise, and the institutional Catholic Church has given itself over to Liberalism, whose moral code, at bottom, is the same as that of atheism..

Those who have been converted to atheism have succumbed to the only argument atheism has ever had, "the problem of evil." First, they say, Why does God permit such tragedy and sorrow throughout the world. They bemoan both moral injustices and natural disasters, man’s and nature’s cruelty to man, often, most noticeably, to the poor, the defenseless, and downtrodden. One has only to read the papers to know what human beings must suffer from politicians’ wars, evil rulers, rampaging invaders, and vicious criminals, though all the media are very selective in their reporting. And it is nothing to learn of the deaths of tens of thousands due to earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, fires, famine, and epidemics. The survivors often lose not only their loved ones, but often suffer crippling injuries, the loss of their homes and meager possessions. Why does God, Who has all power, allow these things to happen? Why does He not intervene?

They next conclude: Since He does not prevent these catastrophes, He must not exist; because if He does not prevent them, He is not good, and God, if He exists, must be good.. Having come to this conclusion, they pronounce themselves released from all obligations toward God. Since there is no God, there is no afterlife nor final retribution. Therefore, there is no moral law; the only law is not to do injustice to one’s neighbor (especially if he is bigger).

If there is no God, there is only this earthly life. If there is no afterlife, then there is no point to moral goodness or self-discipline. It is logical simply to suit oneself, to go where his appetites take him. If there is no God, life has no spiritual dimension; there are no unseen realities, no supernatural mysteries, grace from Heaven, no hope of everlasting life; and we are nothing but thinking animals. If there is no spiritual element in man, there is no reason for moral inhibitions, which inhibitions derive from custom and ephemeral circumstances, not from conscience, and not from divine commands. If there is no spiritual dimension in man, there is no standard of behavior, there is no moral good or bad. Goodness or evil must be measured in terms of its impact on our fellow animals; everything is allowed which does not injure or inconvenience others.

If there is no God, all that is related in the Bible can properly be regarded as a myth. Thus, the story of Adam and Eve and the Serpent and the Fall has no real significance and is no more compelling than the myths of Greece and Rome or the Gilgamesh and the Upanishads. This is the kind of logic that predominates in the institutions of higher learning throughout the Western World. It is what is fed to us in books and movies and other organs of influence. It is what students are taught in schools.

The consequence of this kind of thinking is to be seen all around us in the general depravity of the population from the top to the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. Fornication, homosexuality, divorce, public concubinage, gross indecency, abortion, murder, stealing, cheating, perjury, materialism, luxury, avarice, organized crime, drugs, the corruption of children, and an endless train of other vices are tolerated as normal behavior.

If we begin to recount the crimes of atheistic governments, we shall never come to an end. For example, as the most powerful nation on earth, which, under the shibboleth of "separation of church and state," has shown itself to be indifferent to and defiant of God, His Son, and His Church, the United States of America presents itself to the world as a prime example of an imperial power which has arrogated to itself the place of God in judging and punishing nations, while it progressively plunders and oppresses its own citizenry. Steeped in hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and audacity, it declares itself the world’s policeman and deliverer, while it stretches its tentacles into one country after another in the form of computer generated money and horrendous weaponry. In the clutches of its pietistic ravages, its victims warn their neighbors, "Woe to the nation America comes to save!"

Those who lose faith in God because of "the problem of evil" and proceed to deny His existence, seem not to realize that their reasoning is the most infantile nihilism. For their atheism leaves them without an explanation for everything, for all that exists, the world, the heavens, the power and beauty and wonder of nature, the promptings of conscience, our intelligence, the whole fabric of creation. Atheism is born of cowardice, childish irrationality, and small-minded conceit. If there is no God, where did the whole scheme of things come from? The atheists say that everything evolved from nothing, and that, therefore, everything is mindless and undirected. That nothing produced something, that nothing produced the human mind which is prone to reasonableness, which asks the question: How can nothing produce anything? Needless to say, it cannot. Only an infinite God can have produced what is here.

Atheists close their eyes and ears to the revelation of God and the way of life that Jesus Christ taught us, at Whose cruel passion and ignominious death His Own Father did not intervene. Their spirit is one of bloated pride, which claims that almighty God owes them an explanation as to why He runs the world as He does, and it must be given them without their looking or asking for it.

Thus, while they exclaim over the hardness and perilousness of life on earth, they join those who are the chief cause of "man’s inhumanity to man." It is not the God-fearing, but the godless and irreligious who are the abettors of evil and the violators of the weak and helpless..

Those who have not lost faith are able to bear with the mystery of evil much better. And, though their observations in no way alter the picture, i.e., the tragedies and sorrows continue, they are able to counter despair with revealed truth and holy trust.

What are we to do, who must live in the midst of the rebellion and immorality of the godless? We demonstrate our faith in and devotion to the Divine Being; we pray for the conversion of His professed enemies; we pray for His grace to love and serve Him generously as He deserves. We flee the works and influences of the wicked and vicious. We renounce the sinful pleasures which they crave and promote. We strive to view all things with the eternal view of God, Who is all-wise and Who will be seen to have "done all things well" at the end of time. We humble ourselves before Him, acknowledging that we know nothing and His Providence exceeds our understanding. Despite all, we know that there has to be a reasonable explanation for all things, because reason and purpose dominate all things, within the mind and outside it.

Our answer to the problem of evil is that all that God does and permits is governed by His perfect wisdom, and His all-encompassing dominion over creation. Only He knows all things including the secrets of hearts and the future. Only He knows the final outcome of all things, that He does and allows and decrees. Regardless of appearances to the contrary, all that He does pertains to the salvation of souls and the attainment of His holy purposes, predestined from eternity. Blessed be His Name forever.

Again, I thank everyone who has prayed for me, and continues to so. I continue to get letters and cards of encouragement, and financial help, all of which I truly appreciate. I send my priestly blessing to everyone who has befriended me during these long months, and implore the merciful God to heap His blessings upon him.

In Christ,

Father James Wathen
