Missa "Da pacem"
Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost
"My son, thy sins are forgiven thee"

Semi-Double Observance of the Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Commemoration of the Feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux, Virgin and Religious

Missa "Da pacem"

GREEN Vestments

The liturgy today alludes to the ordinations of Ember Saturday. Christ is our Savior, and the priests of the Church are made rich in Him. The Church is blessed abundantly in and through Our Lord Jesus Christ

This Sunday used to be called vacant, because it is inscribed in the Missal after the Saturday in Ember week. As the liturgy of Saturday lasted until the Sunday morning, this day had no proper Mass. When later on they no longer waited until evening in order to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice on the Saturday in Ember Week, they borrowed, for the eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, the Mass composed in the sixth Century for the Dedication of the Church of St. Michael, at Rome, which was celebrated on September 29. That is why all the chants relate to the consecration of a church. "I rejoiced when I was told that: We shall go into the house of the Lord" (Verse of Introit and Gradual). "Moses consecrated an altar to God," says the Offertory. "Enter the courts of the Lord and adore Him in His holy temple," adds the Communion.

This Mass, following Ordination Saturday, also alludes to the priesthood. The new priests have just been "blessed in Christ with all manner of riches both of utterance and knowledge" (Epistle). Like the Saviour, Who proved in healing the body of the palsied that He had also healed his soul, the priests have received power to pardon sinners. Palsy is indeed an image of sin, for just as it deprives the body of motion, sin destroys life in the soul (Gospel).

Today is the feast of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus. She was born Mary Frances Teresa Martin of saintly parents at Alencon (Orne) on January 2, 1873. She was educated by the Benedictine Nuns at Lisieux. After her ninth year she tried to enter the Carmelites, and put her case before the Bishop of Bayeux and Pope Leo XIII, whom she visited. At the age of fifteen she was allowed to enter the Carmel at Lisieux (April 9, 1888). She died at the age of twenty-four. There was nothing extra-ordinary about her religious life; she was perfect in her simplicity, humility, charity, her love of God and her trust in Him. She offered herself as a victim to the "merciful love of the good God." She was just a little child in the arms of Jesus. Her way of sanctity was a little way; Pope Pius XI said: "We wish that St. Theresa's secret of sanctity should be made known to every one of our children. We have set her before the children of the Church as a striking and most precious example." Countless miracles have been wrought through her intercession. On her death bed she said: "I do not intend to remain idle in Heaven. My longing is to labor even there for the Church and souls. Our Lord will work wonders for me that will infinitely surpass my boundless desire. After my death I shall let fall a shower of roses." She was canonized May 17, 1923.

EPISTLE:   Corinthians 1: 4-8

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstolii ad Corínthios. Fratres, Grátias ago Deo meo semper pro vobis in grátia Dei, quæ data est vobis in Christo Jesu: quod in ómnibus dívites facti estis in illo, in omni verbo, et in omni sciéntia: sicut testimónium Christi confirmátum est in vobis: ita ut nihil vobis desit in ulla grátia, exspectántibus revelatiónem Dómini nostri Jesu Christi, qui et confirmábit vos usque in finem sine crímine, in die advéntus Dómini nostri Jesu Christi.
Deo Gratias.

Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, I give thanks to my God always for you, for the grace of God that is given you in Jesus Christ, that in all things you are made rich in Him in all utterance and in all knowledge, as the testimony of Christ was confirmed to you so that nothing is wanting to you in my grace, waiting for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will also confirm you into the end without crime, in the day of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:    Matthew 9: 1-8

Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

In illo témpore: Ascendens Jesus in navículam, transfretávit, et venit in civitátem suam. Et ecce offerébant ei paralyticum jacéntem in lecto. Vidéntes autem turbæ timuérunt, at glorificavérunt Deum, qui dedit potestátem talem homínibus.
Laus tibi Christe.

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Luke.
R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus entering into a boat, passed over the water and came into His own city. And behold they brought Him one sick of the palsy lying on a bed and Jesus seeing their faith, said to the sick man of the palsy: "Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee." And behold some of the Scribes said within themselves: He blasphemeth. And Jesus seeing their thoughts, said: "Why do you think evil in your hearts? whether is it easier to say: Thy sins are forgiven thee or to say: Arise and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins" (then said He to the man sick of the palsy): "Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house." And he rose, and went into his house. And the multitude seeing it, feared, and glorified God, who had given such power to men.
Praise be to Christ

PREFACE   of the Most Holy Trinity

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sursum corda.
R.Habemus ad Dominum.
Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro.

SANCTUS, SANCTUS, SANCTUS...

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
R.We have lifted them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is meet and just.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, ever-lasting God: Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, are one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out with one voice saying:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
