EMBER SATURDAY First Saturday

Violet Vestments

Missa "Intret oratio mea"

The Station for the Saturday of Ember Week is always at the great basilica erected by Constantine and rebuilt by the Popes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on the hill of the Vatican on the spot where St. Peter died on the cross and where his body rests. Besides the Gospel is about the Transfiguration of which St. Peter was the chief witness.

It was in this basilica that ordinations took place, preceded, during the night, by twelve lessons of which we have a trace in those occurring in the Mass for to-day. The Introit verse alludes to this nocturnal vigil : "I have cried in the day and in the night before Thee."

Like the Apostles selected to be present on Mount Thabor at the manifestation of the divine life of Jesus (Gospel), the new Priests will ascend the steps of the altar to enter into communication with God. It is they who in His name will exhort us to prayer, to patience and to charity. If we abstain during Lent from even the appearance of evil, our souls, and our bodies will be preserved unstained for the day of the eternal Pash, when Christ (Epistle) will allow us to participate in the glory of His Transfiguration for all eternity.

Let us pray to God to fortify us with His blessing so that, during this Lent, we may never depart from His holy will (Prayer over the People). Today is also the Double Feast of the Martyrs Saints Felicitas and Perpetua. These two saints are the Patron Saints of widows and invoked over the death of children.

These two women were martyred at Carthage on the northern coast of what is today Libya by the Romans. Though persecution and the slaughter of Christians was terrible in Rome itself, the senseless slaying of Christians was even worse in Africa and Egypt. Though Perpetua's father tried to intercede so that she would not embarass the family, her faith was more important to her than family and she would not renounce her belief in Jesus Christ as her Savior. Her refusal to adhere to the pagan wishes of her father moved servants under her father to join her in her faith, one of which was Felicitas or Felicity as she has come to be known. A covey of wild animals from leopards to bears to wild bulls were unleashed on the helpless Christians in the great arena of Carthage and to the sadistic delight of thousands both Perpetua and Felicitas were gored to death by the bulls. They are commemorated daily in the Canon of the Mass among the mentioned martyrs in the Nobis quoque peccatoribus.

There is a commemoration of these two saints in today's Mass with its magnificent Proper for Ordination Mass on the Ember Saturday of Lent.

FIRST LESSON:    Deuteronomy 26: 12-19
Lectio libri Deuteronomii.

Lesson from the Book of Deuteronomy. In those days Moses spoke to the people, saying: When thou hast made an end to tithing all thy fruits, thou shalt speak thus in the sight of the Lord thy God : I have taken that which was sanctified out of my house, and I have given it to the Levite, and to the stranger, and to the fatherless, and to the widow, as Thou hast commanded me : I have not transgressed Thy commandments nor forgotten Thy precepts. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God, and have done all things as Thou hast commanded me. Look from Thy sanctuary, and Thy high habitation of heaven, and bless Thy people Israel, and the land which Thou hast given us, as Thou didst swear to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey. This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these commandments and judgments : and to keep and fulfill them with all thy heart, and with all they soul. Thou hast chosen the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in His ways and keep His ceremonies, and precepts, and judgments, and obey His command. And the Lord hath chosen thee this day, to e His peculiar people, as He hath spoken to thee, and to keep all His commandments: and to make thee higher than all nations which He hath created to His own praise, and name and glory : that thou mayest be a holy people of the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken.

SECOND LESSON:    Deuteronomy 11: 22-25
Lectio libri Deuteronomii. Omnis locus quem calcaverit pes vester, vester erit. A desterto et a Libano a flumine mango Euphrate usque ad mare occidentale, erunt termini vestri. Nullus stabit contra vos : terrorem vestrum et formidinem dabit Dominus Deus vester super omnem terram quam calcaturi, estis, sicuit locutus est vobis Dominus Deus vester.

Lesson from the Book of Deuteronomy. In those days Moses said to the children of Israel: If you keep the commandments which I command you, and do them, to love the Lord your God, and walk in all His ways, cleaving unto Him, the Lord will destroy all these nations before your face, and you shall possess them, which are greater and stronger than you. Every place that your foot shall tread upon shall be yours. From the desert, and from Libanus, from the great river Euphrates unto the western sea shall be your borders. None shall stand against you : the Lord your God shall lay the dread and fear of you upon all the land that you shall tread upon, as he hath spoken to you, the Lord your God.

THIRD LESSON:    2 Machabees 1: 23-26, 27
Lectio libri Machabaeorum.

Lesson from the Book of Machabees. In those days all the priests made prayer, while the sacrifice was consuming, Jonathan beginning and the rest answering. And the prayer of Nehemias was after this manner : O Lord God, Creator of all things, dreadful and strong, just and merciful, who alone art the good king, who alone art gracious, who alone art just and almighty and eternal, who deliverest Israel from all evil, who didst choose the fathers and didst sanctify them : receive the sacrifice for all Thy people Israel, and preserve Thy own portion, and sanctify it that the Gentiles may know that Thou art our God.

ORDINATION OF THE EXORCISTS

GRADUAL:    Psalm 89: 13, 1
Convertere, Domine, aliquantulum, et deprecare super servos tuos. V. Domine, refugium factus es nobis, a generatione et progenie.

Forever and ever.
R.Amen.

FOURTH LESSON:    Ecclesiasticus 36: 1-10
Lectio libri Sapientiae. Domine, Deus noster.

Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. Have mercy upon us, O God of all, and behold us, and show us the light of Thy mercies : and send Thy fear upon the nations that have not sought after Thee, that they may know that there is no God beside Thee, and that they may show forth Thy wonders. Lift up Thy hand over the strange nations, that they may see Thy power. For as Thou hast been sanctified in us in their sight, so Thou shalt be magnified among them in our presence, that they may know Thee, as we also have known Thee, that there is no God beside Thee, O Lord. Renew Thy signs and work new miracles. Glorify Thy hand and Thy right arm. Raise up indignation and pour out wrath. Take away the adversary and crush the enemy. Hasten the time and remember the end, that they may declare Thy wonderful works, o Lord, our God.

O almighty and eternal God, who hast dominion over both the living and the dead, and hast mercy on all whom Thou forekowest shall be Thine by faith and good works : we humbly beseech Thee that all for whom we have resolved to make supplication whether the present world still holds them in the flesh or the world to come has already received them out of the body, may, through the intercession of all Thy saints, obtain of Thy goodness and clemency pardon for all their sins. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God

EPISTLE:   1 Thessalonians 5: 14-28

Deo Gratias.

Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians. Brethren :We beseech you, rebuke the unquiet, comfort the feeble minded, support the weak, be patient towards all men. See that none render evil for evil to any man; but ever follow that which is good towards each other and towards all men. Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In all things give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all. Extinguish not the spirit. Despise not prophecies. But prove all things, hold fast that which is good. From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves. And may the God of Peace Himself sanctify you in all things : that your whole spirit, and soul, and body, may be preserved blameless, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God.

O praise the Lord, all ye nations; and praise Him together, all ye people!
ORDINATION OF THE PRIESTS

V. Quoniam confirmata est super nos misericordiae ejus : et veritas Domini manet in aeternum.

V. For His mercy is confirmed upon us: and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever.
GOSPEL:   Matthew 17: 1-9

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

Levantes autem oculos suos, neminem viderunt, nisi solum Jesum. Et descendentibus illis de monte, praecepit eis Jesus, dicens : "Nemini dixeritis visionem, donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat."
Laus Tibi Christ

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Matthew.
R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time Jesus taketh Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart : and He was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun : and His garments became white as snow. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with Him. And Peter answering, said to Jesus: "Lord, it is good for us to be here: If Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moss, and one for Elias." And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying : This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him." And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said to them : "Arise, and fear not." And they lifting up their eyes saw no one, but only Jesus. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: "Tell the vision to no man till the Son of Man be risen from the dead."
Praise be to Christ

Third Postcommunion for the Living and the Dead
May the sacraments which we have received purify us, we beseech Thee, O almighty and merciful Lord; and through the intercession of all Thy saints, grant that this Thy sacrament may not be unto us a condemnation, but a salutary intercession for pardon; may it be the washing away of sin, the strength of the weak, a protection against all dangers of the world, and a remission of all the sins of the faithful, whether living or dead. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God
For ever and ever.
