Vigil of Saint Thomas, Apostle

Violet Vestments

Missa "Ego autem"

The Church attaches great importance to the feasts of the Apostles, which are preceded by a Vigil (Collect).

The Gospel recalls the vocation of this great Apostle Saint Thomas, also known as the "doubting Apostle" who had the happiness of hearing continually the word of Christ and of enjoying His intimacy. The Offertory declares that he had been chosen by Jesus to be one of the twelve Princes who would govern His Church, "the Lord has crowned him with glory and honor and has given him authority over the works of His hands."

In addition, the words of the Epistle that St. Thomas was given by Christ, "his share of inheritance among the twelve tribes." The country of the Parthians and Persions was allotted to St. Thomas when the Apostles divided the world among themselves. Let us prepare for tomorrow's solemnity in union with the Holy Church.

We want to thank the Friends of Our Lady of Fatima for expediting these resources of the Propers. Sources: Saint Andrew Daily Missal and the Marian Missal , 1945

INTROIT:    Wisdom 51: 10, 11
Ego autem sicut oliva fructigera in domo Domini, speravit in misericordia Dei mei : et exaspectabo nomen tuum, quoniam bonum est ante conspectum sanctorum tuorum. (Ps. 51. 3) Quid gloriaris in malitia : qui potens es in iniquitate? V. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
Repeat Ego autem...
But I, as a fruitful olive-tree in the house of the Lord have hoped in the mercy of my God : and I will wait on Thy name, for it is good in the sight of Thy saints. (Psalm 51: 3) Why dost thou glory in malice, thou that art mighty in iniquity? v. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

EPISTLE:   Ecclesiasticus 44. 25-27; 2-4, 6-9

Lectio libri Sapientiae. Benedictio Domini super caput justi.
Deo Gratias.

Lesson from the Book of Wisdom. The blessing of the Lord was upon the head of the just man. Therefore the Lord gave him an inheritance and divided him his portion in twelve tribes; and he found grace in the eyes of all flesh. He magnified him in the fear of his enemies, and with his words he made prodigies to cease. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him commandments in the sight of his people, and showed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faith and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. And he gave him commandments before his face, and a law of life and instruction, and he exalted him. He made an everlasting covenant with him, and girded him about with a girdle of justice: and the Lord crowned him with a crown of glory.
Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL    Psalm 91: 13, 14

Justus ut palma florebit: sicut cedrus Libani multiplicabitur in domo Domini. V. Ad annuntiandum mane misericordiam tuam, et veritatemm tuam per noctem.

The just man shall flourish like the palm tree : like the cedar of Libanus shall he be multiplied in the house of the Lord. V. To show forth Thy mercy in the morning, and Thy truth in the night.

GOSPEL:    John 15: 12-16

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Joannem.
R.Gloria tibi, Domine

Laus tibi, Christe

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
The continuation of the holy Gospel according to John.
R. Glory to Thee, O Lord

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples : 'This is My commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends, if you do the things that I command you. I will not now call you servants : for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends : because all things whatsoever I have heard of My Father, I have made known to you. You have not chosen Me : but I have chosen you, and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain; that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it to you.'
Praise be to Christ

PREFACE   of the Apostles

Dominus vobiscum.
R. Et cum spiritu tuo.
Sursum corda.
R.Habemus ad Dominum.
Gratias agamus Domino Deo nostro.

SANCTUS, SANCTUS, SANCTUS...

The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Lift up your hearts.
R.We have lifted them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is meet and just.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, to entreat Thee humbly, O Lord, that Thou woulds not desert Thy flock. O everlasting Shepherd; but through Thy blessed Apostles, wouldst keep it under Thy constant protection; that it may be governed by those same rulers, whom as vicars of Thy work, Thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore with Angels and Archangesl, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of The glory, evermore saying:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
