Today:
Quid Dicit Scriptura?

Jacob Michael continues to apply Divine Revelation in his reflections on the Sorrowful Mysteries this week to help us all better understand the scope of this week in his short series "Five Days of Sorrow." Jacob hopes to give each reader a better grasp of their own life and put it all in perspective. Indeed the force with which the soldiers plunged the cruel thorn-plated helmet into Christ's sacred skull would doom any man to immediate, indescribable pain and horror. Yet Christ did not give up, He did not say "Enough!" He merely remained silent as his torturers mocked and derided Him further. Talk about harassment and persecution. Think about what He went through for us the next time we feel put upon. Jacob shares some astounding medical and historical facts that make the crowning of thorns all the more horrible in scope as he provides a most inspiring meditation for Wednesday of Holy Week on
The Crowning of Thorns
Shears and Tears of a Lamb Catharine Lamb helps us prepare for the beginning of the Easter Triduum by giving us a better perspective of the symbolism and meaning of the rituals of Maundy Thursday and why it is called such, for Maundy means Mandatum which translates to 'Commandment' and this Christ gave us with the institution of the Blessed Sacrament gifting those worthy of His graces His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Catharine also gives us some insight into the Office of Tenebrae and where it originated and its beautiful meaning and customs kept alive from the monks keeping Christ company overnight to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the side chapel for the faithful to keep watch. Catharine takes us through tomorrow's magnificent liturgy practiced for so many centuries by Holy Mother Church. She explains in - Maundy Thursday: A New Commandment I Give Unto You
Yesterday:
Christ or chaos
Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey weighed in with a most powerful and necessary essay on the state of consciences today. Too many have accepted the compromise and in so doing have only empowered satan further. He addressed the Bishops of the United States, dressing them down for their lukewarmness and pulled no punches when it comes to the Democratic candidate for president John F. Kerry who is trying to ride on the coattails of another JFK whose own heresy began America on this trek into moral depravity and a loss of its soul. Tom pointed out the magnificence and absolute principles outlined by Pope Leo XIII in Sapientiae Christianae 114 years ago which holds truer today for politicians and the hierarchy than ever before. Tom also reminded that it is not the political parties who have the answers. Neither the pro-abort Dems or the hypocritical GOP are the answer. The only answer is to strive with every ounce of energy and breath of life to preserve life - everlasting life - by seeking to re-establish the Social Kingship of Christ no matter what it takes. Tom laid it all out in his hard-hitting column
Craven Cowards and Judases!.
Quid Dicit Scriptura?

Jacob Michael continued to apply Divine Revelation in his reflections on the Sorrowful Mysteries this week to help us all better understand the scope of this week in his short series "Five Days of Sorrow." Jacob hopes to give each reader a better grasp of their own life and put it all in perspective. Indeed Christ's terrible scourging at the Pillar, so brilliantly and vividly portrayed by Mel Gibson in his masterpiece film, is really only a hint of what Our Lord suffered. And what He suffered were the lashes of our sins - from the most inconspicuous venial sin to the most deliberate and vile mortal sin. They are all offensive to God and need to be atoned for since God operates in "Trinity Time" not linear time. Jacob reminded us to reflect on this scourging and realize every time we sin or have sinned it is another deep bruise in the precious Body of Christ as he shared a most inspiring meditation for Tuesday of Holy Week on
The Scourging at the Pillar
Monday:
Quid Dicit Scriptura?

Jacob Michael used Divine Revelation to help us all better understand the scope of this week, and the unimaginable Love God has for us that He would send His only-begotten Son to die for us so that we might live. What Jacob hopes to accomplish in his series, which are basically the Sorrowful Mysteries in "Five Days of Sorrow," is to give us all a better grasp of our own lives and put it all in perspective for every drop of His Precious Blood from those first tears in Gethsemani to the last on Golgatha had a definite, specific purpose in atonement for our sins. Jacob confirms that indeed Christ did shed tears of blood in the Garden and what those tears meant as well as the necessary comfort of the angel as he shared a most inspiring meditation for Monday of Holy Week on
The Agony in the Garden
Gabriel's Clarion
Gabriel Garnica reminded us of the simple virtuous traits lived by the Saint of Lourdes, the holy Bernadette whose sanctity was confirmed by God by leaving mankind with a sign of her holiness and adherence to Sacred Tradition for her body remains incorrupt today, nearly 125 years after her death in Nevers, France. Gabriel shared the fact that though Bernadette may not have been a learned Doctor of the Church in the mold of Thomas or Teresa of Avila, she was every way their equal in virtue and, like another French saint, found the simple way the best. Gabriel equated the seven traits of simplicity Bernadette lived to each day of this holiest of weeks in the year when we can apply the practicality of her simple advice which will do wonders in Heaven if we but have a sincere, simple heart full of love for Christ. Gabriel enumerated on her traits in his column
Bernadette Soubirous - Doctor of Simplicity.
SUNDAY:
"Qui legit, intelligat"

In Father Louis Campbell's sermon for Palm Sunday the Hebrew children - Pueri Hebraeorum - who spread palmfronds before Our Lord, hailing Him as the Lord - "Hosanna in the highest" are today's 'pueri hebraeorum' who reject Him. This includes those who advance the heresies of Vatican II and, by doing so, no longer express such love for the Lord. Indeed, as we have seen from the pogroms issued against 'The Passion of The Christ', they openly flaunt that "Vatican II changed that 'medieval thinking'." Father reminds us how damaging to souls that anathema is for all are in agreement that the Jews are not solely responsible for Christ's death. The Church has never blamed the Jews exclusively. They did not kill Christ, but they REJECTED Him. It's basically the same, and they are killing souls today by rejecting the infallible dogma of salvation as Father pointed out in his sermon for truly the Hosannas of truth have turned to Hisses of heresy thanks to the venomous Vatican II agenda that is responsible for sinners remaining in sin and tolerating it. Souls are lost and the Faith is in great jeopardy if we do not resist such anathema by practicing true charity as Father explained in his sermon
"When as yet we were sinners."
Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

Kevin Tierney presented his seventh installment on the Disciplines of the Season, having passed from Lent into Passiontide with today's focus on Palm Sunday in this series simply called "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi." He took the reader through the Propers of the Traditional Latin Mass for the Beautiful ceremony of the Blessing of the Palms, Procession and Holy Mass and compared it to the abbreviated form adopted in the Novus Ordo whereby once again he pointed out the omissions that on the surface may not seem like much of a difference, but in content and intent are huge in one, the Traditional Rite of the Immemorial Mass being totally Catholic, the New Order Rite expressing a Protestant mentality in so many ways. Kevin identified the differences in The Disciplines of Passiontide: Palm Sunday
From Eden to the Empty Tomb

In keeping with the season we began a retro series first presented by Dr. Thomas A. Droleskey last year for The Daily Catholic readers on A Reflection on Salvation History. It stretches from Adam and Eve to the glory of the Paschal Lamb on Easter Sunday. We also encourage you to catch up on his most recent articles at his own site at Christ or chaos. He continued with his special series for Passiontide and Holy Week. For Palm Sunday he showed how we must discard the palms of political correctness and secular ideals for the true fronds of love that come from our heart in which we are willing to not only offer our Hosannas, but take up Christ's Cross for His entire Mystical Body as well in order to keep our focus on the straight and narrow - the sure path that leads up through Calvary. For without the Cross, there can be no Glory! Tom outlined the "Love Trail" in

Saturday:
Catholic PewPOINT
As we head into Holy Week editor Michael Cain reminded all of our mandatory duty as members of the Church Militant, a task most have dropped and abandoned. Too many have forgotten the Poor Souls in Purgatory because the modern church has not emphasized it for that would offend our Protestant brethren in the big ecumaniac circus that the New Order has become. Cain asked us that as we set our clocks ahead an hour to think of the Church Suffering and to switch to "Trinity Time" in order to make use of whatever time we have left on this earth. Cain presented a gut-check for every Catholic, especially Traditional Catholics, when he asked Are we prepared to die with and for Him?.

In his first part of his redact series, Tom traced the history of salvation from the fall of our first parents and the subsequent trials of God's people in the Old Testament in waiting for the Messiah; and when He arrived, few there were who recognized the God-man even in the face of fulfillment of all prophecy because of man's stubborn pride and resistance to God's will. So also today, especially today in 2004 as Tom explained in

Gabriel's Clarion
Gabriel Garnica is righteously upset that in this most holiest and somber of seasons the obscene, blasphemous, and sacrilegious film Life of Brian is being re-released into theaters to compete with Mel Gibson's masterpiece 'The Passion of The Christ' in a most mocking form. The irreverence which the anti-Catholic group Monty Python showed 25 years ago has not subsided as they have approved this action which should not only outrage Catholics, but, as Gabriel points out, should have Jews incensed. He wonders if the same critics of Mel will come forward and castigate this latest abomination or, as he suspects, why go after someone who ideologically and politically is on the same page. It all adds up to further scourging of Our Lord during the week we focus solely on Him. Gabriel expands on this in his column
How Long, O Lord?!.
Shears and Tears of a Lamb Catharine Lamb continues her feature on the Canon of the Mass and those who are honored, continuing with the list of saints invoked in the Nobis quoque peccatoribus after the Consecration. These saints have been abandoned by the New Order for the very words "To us also, Thy sinful servants," which are the only audible words spoken in the Canon of the Mass per the rubrics and celebret set in stone by Trent and Pope Saint Pius V. Thanks to the Vatican II popes the powerful intercession of these saints have been eliminated just as the idea of being a sinner has been downplayed so that all will feel better about themselves. Catharine has a shock for those who have bought into this 'all is love' hype: they're in for a shock when they stand before their Maker at their Particular Judgment. She shares insight into four more saints Ignatio, Alexandro, Marcellino, et Petro who all gave their lives for their Faith rather than betraying Our Lord and the Church He founded. A far cry from what is promoted today as she explains in - Abandoned Saints to sustain Thy Sinful Servants - Part Three
Hope on the Horizon

Terence Jeffrey in his Townhall column points out the pending confrontation that is bound to break out soon and that is John Kerry's absolute acceptance of sin and his direct opposition to God's Laws and the Church's. The Massachusetts senator's feeble excuse of separation of Church and State doesn't hold a lick of water as Jeffrey points out that "if it violates the natural law, the bishops have a right and a duty to hold him accountable." While he really only touches the surface, it is interesting that he cites an event where the Baptist minister Dr. Martin Luther King relied on the wisdom of the holy Doctors of the Church - both St. Augustine and the Angelic Doctor St. Thomas Aquinas. Their contention: "Unjust laws are no laws at all!" Since abortion is unjust because it is murder and goes against the absolute Laws of God,it is no law. Though we wouldn't put as much, if any, hope as Jeffrey does in St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke, Terence seems to think he is the answer, but he has still been all talk. Only when a bishop officially excommunicates a pro-abort politican publicly will the rest sit up and take notice. Regardless, we provide Jeffrey's Townhall column
Will the bishops confront Kerry?

Traditional Insights Mario Derksen continued his excellent series on "The Truth About Ecumenism" as he meticulously analyzed the final word of the Church on ecumenism. Surprise, surprise it is not Ut unum sint but rather Mortalium animos, the no nonsense Papal encyclical by Pope Pius XI who warned in 1928 against the very insanity that has run wild over the past several decades and grows worse by the year, by the month. Mario provided the proof that ecumenism is not just a grave error, but an anathema which, in effect, is apostasy pure and simple for it denies the ineffable truths of the One True Church, denies the primary dogma of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus, and denies Christ's command in the Scriptures. Mario provided the second installment on An Analysis of the Encyclical Mortalium Animos
and other true Catholic Teaching on Religious Unity
with part two Allurements & Temptations
A Chronicle of Catholic Tradition
The thirteenth chapter of our series on the history of Holy Mother the Church and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
moved out of the age of persecution from the Romans and encountered a new persecution, one from within as the devastating Arian heresy raises its ugly head. This Medusa of madness would cause more souls to be lost than all the Christians of the first three centuries. Many say that with the end of the cruel reign of Diocletian and the rise of Constantine the Great as the new emperor who, through the Sign of the Cross, conquered, that the growth spurted with Christians free to worship publicly for the first time. With this freedom, abuse entered in as is usually the case and it would be left to the emperor and Pope St. Sylvester I to try to quell the heresy with the First Major Council at Nicaea in 325 as we covered the first half of the fourth century during the pontificates of seven Popes in the thirteenth installment In Hoc Signo Vinces

Gabriel's Clarion
Gabriel Garnica showed why everything is topsy-turvy today and why some want to strike God from the Pledge, from the schools, even from the churches, and definitely from the courts. They no longer recognize the absolute mandate of the Ten Commandments handed down from Almighty God to Moses on Mt. Sinai for all time. Considering the state of things today, is it any wonder the Ten Suggestions have replaced the Ten Commandments? No wonder they wanted to take the Decalogue monument out of Judge Roy Moore's rotunda. Do you think Moses might be mighty mad still? It's a sure thing that God's not happy because so many today have by and large turned their collective backs on the True God and His Laws and embraced the Golden Calf of The New Order both secularly and ecclesiastically. Gabriel has titled his column: Moses Meets The New Order.
Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

Kevin Tierney presented his sixth installment on the Disciplines of Lent in this series simply called "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi." He took the reader through the Propers of the Traditional Latin Mass for this past Passion Sunday and compared it to what is offered in the proper for the Fifth Sunday in Lent Novus Ordo Missae. He pinpointed the passages that are optional and showed why those particular passages which the priest is at freedom to omit are key to the entire meaning and message of the Scripture reading. If one wonders why so many do not believe as they once did reading these particular points will help open eyes to the vast difference between the structured, purposeful Traditional rite and the novelty-ridden option-oriented New Order rite. Kevin identified the wide chasm in The Disciplines of Lent: Passion Sunday
Tuesday:
Catholic PewPOINT
Editor Michael Cain dovetailed from Gabriel Garnica's column on 'Reality' TV from Monday's issue, in asking how some of these other shows get televised. He wondered how many are getting sucked in by promos on television which always leave one wanting, never truly entertaining and even worse, so insidiously injecting anti-Catholicism into the content. While many times it is subliminal, other times it is quite obvious, blatantly such as in last Friday night's episode of Fox's Wonderfalls. As bad as that was, Cain came back for more punishment by sitting through CBS 'Jesus' Sunday night. He shared the sad side effects of the Andy Rooney-network's latest effort to offset the good Mel Gibson has been able to accomplish through his masterpiece film 'The Passion'. As for the CBS fare, Cain gave all a hint of why they should stick exclusively to broadcasting NCAA basketball games and the Masters Golf Tournament. It would be better if all the networks scrubbed their programming because it's hard to decipher one network from another. They all look alike and they're all carrying the same damaging type of trash that is harmful to souls as he pointed out in his editorial March Madness Gone Berserk!.
Pro Life Prescriptions

Dr. Frank Joseph returned to these pages with a stirring, impassioned plea to Archbishop Sean O'Malley to get off his hierach duff and do something before it is too late. He was, of course, referring to John Kerry and his shameful, scandalous flaunting of his sinful ways and receiving the sacraments as if nothing is wrong. Frank reminded the Archbishop of his duty before God and closed with a poignant and most pertinent piece by radio legend Paul Harvey titled "If I were the devil" in which it is quite obvious the bishops have done nothing to stop the evil one, even to curtail the devil somewhat. Now push has come to shove and it's time for O'Malley to stand and be counted or lose out forever if Kerry is elected. This has nothing to do with politics, but everything to do with saving souls as Frank emphasized in his column An Open Plea to Archbishop Sean O'Malley
Monday:
Gabriel's Clarion
Gabriel Garnica wondered what if all the shallow programming, especially the inane so-called reality television shows that seem to litter the major networks over the past two years, instead strove to provide something of value using the same concept but put towards good in a Christ-like manner. He realized he was just dreaming for the world would never buy it as programmers and viewers seemingly sink lower and lower in the base mentality of pushing the envelope beyond any kind of moral standards. Gabriel reminded us that there is definitely a reality at play here, one that can effect the very outcome of eternal life. With those kind of stakes, it is best to do a reality check as he pointed out in his column The Reality of 'Reality Entertainment'.
Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

Kevin Tierney presented his fifth installment on the Disciplines of Lent in this series simply called "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi." He took the reader through the Propers of the Traditional Latin Mass for Laetare Sunday and compared it to what is offered in the Novus Ordo Missae. For his analysis of Laetare Sunday we would like to rejoice, but there is so much lacking in the synthetic rite that on laments instead. It is a fact that the man-made rite of Vatican II is sorely lacking as Kevin explained why: the New Order has left it so ambiguous and avoids those things which are absolutely necessary not only for striving toward sanctity, but for salvation. The whole purpose of the Novus Ordo liturgy is to negate the negative theology that we are totally dependent on God and are unworthy unless blessed by Him and in His good graces by having sanctifying grace on our souls. Kevin broke it down in The Disciplines of Lent: Laetare Sunday
SUNDAY:
"Qui legit, intelligat"

In Father Louis Campbell's sermon for Passion Sunday, he reminded us all of the infallible truths handed down in Sacred Scripture as to the New Covenant which he likened to a marriage covenant between man and God. The Hebrews of the Old Covenant had the same covenant until they wandered for the final time and, by their own choosing, rejected God, despite constant warnings and curses to bring them back to their senses. Their blessings ran out. God divorced forever the Old Covenant and took to Himself the Bride of the New Covenant through His only-begotten Son to live, literally happily ever after. However, as Father pointed out, that is only possible if we are faithful to Him. If we stray, then, like the Jews, we too will be deserving of the seven-fold curses, the woes that befell the Hebrew people and are befalling His unfaithful children of the Bridegroom today. What is most pertinent and shameful is that the present bride, seeking to please man rather than her eternal Spouse, has gone behind the back of the Divine Groom and conspired with the exiled "divorcee" to tell the latter that an annulment is no longer necessary for the marriage to the Bridegroom is as good for the old bride as well as the new bride. This would be spiritual polygamy and there are dire consequences for such infidelity as Father illustrated through Scripture in his sermon
Blessings and Woes
Books you can count on!
Gary L. Morella provided a most positive review of an outstanding book by Atila Sinke Guimarães just released by Tradition In Action. It is considered a special edition of his vaunted and eye-opening collection Eli, Eli, Lamma Sabacthani which already includes the landmark volumes The Murky Waters of Vatican II, Animus Delendi I, and Animus Delendi II. His latest, Vatican II, Homosexuality & Pedophilia is a book that needs to be in the hands of every bishop in the world, including the Pope, as well as in the hands of every religious editor and investigative journalist so they'll understand what the Church truly teaches and not buy the modernist/tolerant-speak and psycho-babble that has so insidiously undermined Holy Mother Church. Gary L. Morella presented a succinct, compact review that hopefully should pique the interest of all in desiring to read and better understand why the Church has gotten itself into such a sordid situation and why she has done so little to extricate herself. The facts and evidence may shock you, but satan is so clever and has masqueraded himself and his agenda so insidiously. Gary pointed out Atila's work helps "connect the dots as to why Rome is impotent to right the Barque of Peter by sadly coming to the realization that the pro-sodomite mentality in the Church goes right up to the highest levels of the Vatican." Atila's book is a must read in order to alert all to how deep the rot goes and why the scandal in America was really only the tip of the iceberg. We encourage you to order, read and share with others his book: Vatican II, Homosexuality & Pedophilia
Saturday:
Gabriel's Clarion
Gabriel Garnica reminded us that we can learn a valuable spiritual lesson from the journey Mel Gibson has taken in his odyssey of being able to make 'The Passion of The Christ' one of the most seen movies of all time. Gabriel pointed out that had Mel played by man's rules, which is the norm in Hollywood - especially in following the 'sacred Hollywood rules' - his movie might have reached $100 million by now, but it would soon phase into oblivion. Because Mel did not trust in man, but God his movie not only has legs in surpassing $300 million at the box office but will become a classic for posterity. Gabriel listed five specific lessons we can learn and ties it all into the fact we are in the world, not never of it in his column Directing for the Divine Director.
Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

Kevin Tierney presented his fourth installment on the Disciplines of Lent in this series simply called "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi." He took the reader through the Propers of the Traditional Latin Mass and compared it to what is offered in the Novus Ordo Missae. Needless to say the latter pales in comparison, but Kevin explained why the New Order has left it so ambiguous and avoids those things which are absolutely necessary not only for striving toward sanctity, but for salvation. The whole purpose of the Novus Ordo liturgy is to negate the negative theology that we are totally dependent on God and are unworthy unless blessed by Him and in His good graces by having sanctifying grace on our souls. Kevin broke it down in The Disciplines of Lent: The Third Sunday of Lent
Deprograming Diabolical Disorientation
Father Lawrence Smith provided a compact updated 'Syllabus of Errors' since the wisdom of Pius IX's Syllabus, the strongly worded encyclical to the American Bishops on Americanism by Leo XIII, and St. Pius X's Pascendi Dominici gregis have all been discarded in favor of the diabolical disorientation that seems to be the rule of the land today both in civil and ecclesiastical circles. The Constitution of our land and the Sacred Deposit of Faith have been ransacked to please those who do not please God.
Is there any wonder why our country and beloved Church are in such dire straights? Father showed the blaring contradictions in his pertinent and short, but succinct list which illustrate only too well the dichotomy of discord. Father asked who has the authority and audacity to do this and who really is in charge now? Questions that will hopefully prompt one to think seriously on the diabolical disorientation that so badly needs the Light of Truth. When Modernists Rule.
Friday:
Quid dicit Scriptura?
Jacob Michael re-asserted the infrangible teaching of The Council of Trent on the connection between the Sacrifice of Calvary and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, infallibly set in stone by Pope St. Pius V for all time in the Traditional Latin Mass. Jacob reflected on Mel Gibson's masterpiece - his magnum opus - in confirming the totally Catholic truths the film adhers to dogmatically. Jacob showed how Mel's flashback scenes are not coincidental but in line with the very intrinsic link of Atononement and the Propitiatory Sacrifice begun at the Last Supper and consummated on Golgotha. He also showed through Scriptural prophecies the fulfillment of the Old Covenant in the establishment of the New Covenant through the Body and Blood of Christ and backed this up by pertinent truths from holy men of the Early Church in confirming that Mel's work is a true gift from Heaven. 'The Passion of The Christ' can only enhance one's love for the continual Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as Jacob pointed out in his column The Sacrifice!
Traditional Thoughts

Considering that the Supreme Court is currently sitting in judgment on whether "Under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, Father Yves le Roux weighed in with a timely article of which everyone should strongly take notice. With all the fears of anti-Semitism raging out of control because of Mel's movie, a canard spawned by mostly the progressive Zionist front and not orthodox Jews, we can see it was all a sham on their part. There have been no pogroms. Yet the fact remains the Jews did reject Christ and still do today, but they are not alone, not by a long shot. Man has made his own mess and asked for the due punishments visited upon him. The sad fact and the fallout of so much of the destruction of the moral fabric of society today is the abandonment of Christ's Social Kingship. Father emphasized that all the modern vices combined do not add up to the greatest crime mankind has committed and that is "the crime of treason" setting man against God. Father pointed out that while Christ's Sacrifice represents His Divine Mercy, God is equally Just and will have due justice. He urged us all to be mindful of this and to use the rest of this Lent to prepare and be prepared for the Chastisements and Punishments inevitably growing stronger as man veers farther away from the Divine.

The Passion' Bumps Gump Out of #10th Spot All Time!
Passion's' Passionate Returns Illustrate the Fever of the Fervor of Faith! Holy Week is here and many expect Mel Gibson's masterpiece 'The Passion of The Christ' to fare well this week as many will add to their inspiration by including the 'The Passion' as part of their meditation on the Passion and Death of Our Lord in this holiest weeks of the year.
This weekend Mel's little film surpassed 'Forrest Gump' as the tenth highest grossing movie ever. Next up on the list is 'Finding Nemo' at $339.7 mil* which should easily be surpassed by the weekend, quite possibly by the Easter Triduum. After six weeks 'The Passion' has amassed $332,149,000 million at the box office in North America through April 5th. This doesn't include Oceania and Europe or the Middle East where it has been a surprise hit. We urge all to see it if you haven't seen it yet, and if you have: SEE IT AGAIN!
'The Passion of The Christ' expects resurgence at the Box Office this week
The term bandied about "Jesus Saves" can be taken literally as far as the godforsaken pagan Hollywood is concerned for were it not for 'The Passion' which accounted for a record winter season which The Hollywood Reporter calls "How Mel Saved the Winter Boxoffice Season and Maybe the Year." Gibson's masterpiece was the second highest box-office film of all time for a winter season, just missing topping the all-time BO champ Titanic a just less than 6 million dollars. The film is already thirteenth all time and by Easter will comfortably be in the top ten. Meanwhile it is basking in five number one categories:
- The number one R-rated film ever, leaving its closest competition Matrix Reloaded a distant second at $281 million.
- The top independent film ever distributed. Period! And it's only begun!
- The number one film as far as February openings for all time.
- It is the number one film ever for a non-English movie which also is a first - released in the US. By the way, come Oscar time it will not be eligible for Best Foreign Language Film. Why? Because there is no country which speaks Aramaic or Latin anymore. As for the latter, sadly, not even Vatican City.
- Mel's movie stayed at the top as number one at the box office for 23 consecutive days. Interesting also that those who later beat out 'The Passion' for a weekend, such as 'Dawn' and 'Scoobey Do' drop off dramatically after the initial three-day push whereas 'The Passion' continues to hold up.
One interesting fact is that a recent Gallup poll said that 34% that had not seen it yet would definitely see it which guarantees legs for Mel's film. Ad to this that 31% will either see it again or definitely rent or buy the DVD or video and many believe that eventually it will topple Titanic.
What is truly more amazing than the monetary numbers is the impact the film has had on lives. Already there are accounts of over 70,000 testimonies of how the film changed their lives. We know about the murderer and the thief who turned themselves in because their consciences, not fear of being caught, caught up to them after they say Mel's magnum opus. The other interesting point is that church attendance since the movie's release is up 10% and what is even more amazing is that Mel has everyone talking about Jesus in a positive manner and going back to the Sacred Scriptures to fill in the blanks, if you will, for there is a thirst for "the Truth, the Way, and the Life."
If you have stayed away because you couldn't handle the violence or were put off by negative reviews, check your Faith. Ask yourself why. Christ didn't like it either but He was willing to undergo the humiliation and unbearable pain for you. It's Holy Week; offer it up and help carry His cross by experiencing this miracle that is moving souls, so much so that two men have turned themselves into law authorities for their crimes, one was for murder, the other for theft. Why? Because Mel's movie tinged their consciences. True modern Dismas men in our midst. How many more have changed and amended their lives? God only knows. Go see 'The Passion' again and then let us know what you thought of the film and how it affected you. Share with our readers by writing to My take on 'The Passion'
