he theme for this Sunday is humility and mercy. St. Paul, in today's Epistle, has been charged by God to proclaim to the Gentiles that like the Jews, they have been chosen to form apart of His people. An entirely free choice which should fill them with gratitude towards God and warn them against that discouragement which is only a form of pride. Again, humility is vital for spiritual survival.
In today's Gospel of St. Luke, even on the Sabbath, when all manual labor was forbidden, the Jews did not hesitate to do what was necessary to rescue an ox or a donkey from the bottom of a well, and not leave it there to be drowned. Why then may not the Savior heal a sick man on the same day? He was also rebuking the Pharisees for their strict letter of the law while they themselves did not even obey the spirit of the law as Christ condemns them in his seven curses in Matthew 23.
Our Lord's words, "Go, sit down in the lowest place," do not mean that a superior should put himself below his subordinates, or expose his dignity to contempt. He should, however, remember these words of Holy Scripture: "The greater thou art, the more humble thyself in all things; and thou shalt find grace before God" (Ecclesiasticus 3: 20).

And answering them, He said: "Which of you whall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out on the sabbath day?" And they could not answer Him these things.
