hristian people should attend to their temporal interests without exaggerated preoccupation, for such anxiety offends God Who is our Father in Heaven. We cannot serve two masters: the flesh and the spirit, at the same time. But let us serve the spirit given to us by the Holy Ghost, Who inclines us to supernatural life.
In today's Epistle St. Paul mentions certain vices to which our lower nature may carry us. He points out three sins against purity, tow against the virtue of religion, nine against charity and two against temperance. These are the works of the flesh. Then the apostle passes to the faruits of the Holy Ghost, which he enumerates under the names of the twelve Christian virtues. Whoever practes these virtues is led by the Spirit of God, Who is the Holy Ghost - the Spirit of liberty leading us to crucify the flesh that we may no longer be saves, and produce actions which are like agreeable fruit.
In the Gospel today, Christ emphasizes that to flee from vice and practice virtue is truly to seek the kingdom of God. All this does not mean that we are to be idle. Our Lord does not repress a prudent thrift, but the lack of trust in divine Providence, that anxiety about material things, which stands so much in the way of true freedom of the spirit, and keeps us from being generous in the Lord's service.

At that time Jesus said to His disciples: "No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will sustain the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat, and the body more than the raiment? Behold the birds of the air; for they neither sow nor do they reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are you not of much more value than they? And which of you, by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they labor not, neither do they spin; but I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. Now if God so clothe the grass of the field, which is today, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more you, O ye of little faith! Be not solicitous therefore saying: What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? for after all there things do the heathen seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and His justice; and all these things shall be added unto you."
