Church gives us today a true notion of Christian humility. The liturgy reminds us that the humble soul is pleased to recognize its nothingness; only on this condition (and the soul knows it), will the virtue of Our Lord Jesus Christ dwell in us.
In today's Gospel, Our Lord stigmatizes the pride of the Pharisee which makes him put his trust in himself and which always shows itself in his contempt for others. Humility of the publican is the virtue every Catholic must practice.
Our sanctification is an impossible work if we undertake it alone, since our acts are only supernatural if they proceed from the Holy Ghost. That is what the Church impresses on us to-day in giving us a true notion of Christian humility.
Left to ourselves, we are powerless and given to sin, it is to God that we owe its avoidance or its pardon, and that we are even able to pronounce the name of Jesus affirming His divinity (Epistle).
The pride of the Pharisee is the enemy of God, for it attributes to itself the gifts which the Holy Ghost confers on each according to His pleasure (Epistle), and it therefore hinders His divine power from manifesting itself in us (Collect), since it makes us imagine that we need no help. The humble soul, on the contrary, is pleased to recognize its nothingness, knowing that it is only on this condition that the virtue of Christ will dwell in it.

[Psalm 54: 17-18, 20, 23
] Cum Clamarum ad Dominum
. When I cried to the Lord He heard my voice, from them that draw near to me; and He humbled them, who is before all ages, and remains for ever: cast thy care upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee. ((Psalm 54: 2)). Hear, O God, my prayer, and despise not my supplication; be attentive to me and hear me.

O God, who dost manifest Thine almighty power most chiefly in sparing and showing mercy: multiply upon us Thy mercy: that as we hasten towards Thy promises, Thou mayest make us partakers of the heavenly treasures.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who livest and reignest with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.
(1 Corinthians 12: 2-11) Brethren, You know that, when you were heathens, you went to dumb idols, according as you were led. At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves as just, and despised others.
"Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one was a pharisee, and the other a publican. The pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: 'O God, I give Thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; as also is this publican. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' And the publican standing afar off would not so much as lift up his eyes towards heaven, but struck his breast saying: 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' (Indulgence of 500 days.) I say to you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: because every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."
