Mortal Sin is the consummate Dead-End!|
The VerbumQUO for today is "moriemini", the Latin future tense for "you shall die" taken from today's Gospel for Monday in the Second Week of Lent in which our Lord repeats three times "you shall die in your sins." A reminder for Lent that sin has great consequences.

Editor's Note: The is editor has relaunched this series for Lent in order to highlight one word from the Proper of the day's Mass. Taking the Latin Verbum and Quotidianum, which mean respectively "Word" and "Daily", we have coined the word "Verbumquo" by contracting quotidianum to quo and running it together as VerbumQUO for this feature series, thus "The Daily Word," as in the sum of the message, the 'quotient', if you will. It is also our hope that in choosing the Latin word with its meaning and etimology more will be attuned to hearing the word read at the altar and better comprehend the beauty of the Mother tongue. Today the VerbumQUO for Monday in the Second Week of Lent is moriemini which is "you shall die",the future tense of moriri meaning "to die." It is used in conjunction with Christ's words of warning to the multitude of Jews in which He repeats three times that "you shall die in your sins" unless they believe that He truly is the promised Messias. We see this in today's Gospel passage from Saint John 8: 21-29:
In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus turbis Judæórum: "Ego vado, et quærétis, Me, et in peccáto vestro moriémini. Quo ego vado, vos non potústis veníre." Dicébant ergo Judæi: Numquid interfíciet semetípsum, quia dixit: Quo ego vado, vos non potéstis veníre? Et dicébat eis: Vos de deórsum estis, ego de supérnis sum. Vos de mundo hos estis, ego non sum de hoc mundo. Dixit ergo vobis quia moriémini in peccátis vestris: si enim non credidéritis quia ego sum, moriémini in peccáto vestro. Dicébant ergo el: Tu quis es? Dixit eis Jesus: "Princípium, qui et loquor vobis. Multa hábeo de vobis loqui, et judicáre. Sed qui me misit, verax est: et ego quæ audívi ab eo, hæc loquor in mundo." Et non cognovérunt quia Patrem ejus dicébat Deum. Dixit ergo eis Jesus: "Cum exaltavéritis Fílium hóminis, tunc cognoscétis quia ego sum, et a meípso fácio nihil: sed sicut dócuit me Pater, hæc loquor: et qui me misit, mecum est, et non relíquit me solum: quia ego quæ plácita sunt ei, fácio semper."
At that time, Jesus said to the multitudes of the Jews, "I go and you shall seek Me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come." The Jews therefore said, Will He kill Himself? because He said, Whither I go, you can not come. And He said to them, "You are from beneath, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore I say to you, that you shall die in your sins; for if you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your sin." They said therefore to Him, Who art thou? Jesus said to them, "The beginning, Who also speak to you. Many things I have to speak and judge of you; but He that sent Me is true, and the things I have heard of Him, these same I speak in the world." And they understood not that He called God His Father. Jesus therefore said to them, "When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself, but as the Father hath taught Me, these things I speak: and He that sent Me is with Me, and He hath not left Me alone:for I do always the things that please Him."
We see very clearly the no-nonsense approach of our Lord here; three times He asserts the very same necessity to accept His teaching or die in their sins. Dying in one sins means "mortal" and mortal sin damns one to hell. It is a reaffirmation of His words in Mark 16: 16: "He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not, shall be condemned." Nothing could be clearer, and yet even today we have workers of iniquity like Abe Foxman calling Jesus and the New Testament "anti-Semitic" and basing his arguments on the heretical documents of Vatican II, most notably Nostra Aetate and later Ut unum sint, Dominus Jesus, and the Pontifical Biblical Commission's anathema that the Jews no longer have to convert for salvation; something that was not only approved but signed by one Joseph Ratzinger. We see so clearly that the counterfeit church of conciliarism continues to peel away the mask and expose itself for what it truly is: NOT CATHOLIC! This was brought home vividly this past week when the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture defended the Good Friday intercession in the old Rite. And yet spouted the Modernity that has been the prevalent essence of the false church. To try and spin it to mollify the Jews and behind the recasting of the Latin text, "Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi is quoted in an article in L'Osservatore Romano that there is
"no missionary strategy directed towards the Jews. At the heart of the Christian hope is Jesus, and that's why the church prays, at the end of time, if they are to share Jesus, 'the faithful of Israel' will be found at their side. That was 'the Christian vision', but not a 'program' for the 'conversion' of the Jews. The Good Friday intercession for the Jews can be found in the Missal of the old form of the Catholic Rite, it was recently reworded by Pope Benedict, alluding to a quote from St Paul."
Strange that they have overlooked our Lord's command in St. Mark 16: 15-16 and several other Gospel passages, as well as St. Paul's Epistles, but then conciliarists are masters at picking and choosing cafeteria style, what doesn't suit them for their humanist agenda of gaining human respect at the expense of incurring God's almighty wrath. It's the Modernists' Way, their creed. Never mind future consequences, live for the now and be sure to discard the past, especially anything that will contradict their prideful agenda.
Throughout Lent we see how the Old Testament readings so wisely chosen by holy Mother Church tie in how God knew those whom He had chosen would reject Him. The clues are throughout the Old Book, and yet today they are so misinterpreted because they have not trusted in the discernment of the Church, divinely inspired by the Holy Ghost and which every Catholic must submit and not interpret Sacred Scripture they way they think. You see, divine revelation is not left to opinion, but fact and faith. Human interpretation accounts for the plethora of false religions today who have, in effect, rejected Christ and His full teachings by thinking they have a better plan than God. What gall! Many call themselves "Christian" today, including those in the Novus Ordo lodges, but they must realize that the Catholic Faith can never be compromised and if it is, then it is no longer Catholic, in effect, no longer Christian. We must not forget Jesus' words in St. Matthew 7: 21, "Not every one that saith to Me, 'Lord, Lord', shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven: but he that doth the will of My Father, Who is in Heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven."
And what is the will of the Father? We saw that yesterday in the Gospel of St. Matthew for the Second Sunday of Lent at the Transfiguration when through the "Voice" the heavenly Father affirmed, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased." He expressed the same in Saint Mark 1: 11. Those who follow and heed all that Christ taught are then doing the will of the Father. Christ established One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church on the Rock of Peter. What Peter passed down was the will of the Father, what His successors up through Pope Pius XII preserved and passed down
was the will of the Father. If this is all true, and it is, then the syllogism holds that what has been taught since Pius' death has not been the same as before. Then how can it be the same? It cannot be for it logically goes against the Father's will. Since the Triune Divinity cannot change or err, then it must be the adversary of the Holy Trinity: the devil. It is really all so simple, it is that man of hell - the prince of the world - who seeks to complicate and confuse.
The etimology of the word comes from the Latin root mors = "death, mortal." Let us look at Webster's various definitions:
"Mortal" - adj., "[From the Latin mors, mortis, death] 1.Subject to death; destined to die. 2. a. Destructive to life; deadly; fatal; specif., exposing to or deserving spiritual death; as mortal sin. b. So severe as to be thought of as threatening death. c. Wishing, or involving a wish, to kill; deadly; as a mortal enemy. 3. Human; belonging to man; as mortal wit. 4. Of or pertaining to death or its occasion; deathly; as th emortal place, a vital spot. 5. Colloq. Extreme; very great; esp., very tedious; as, a sermon lasting two mortal hours. - Syn. See DEADLY. - adv. Mortally; - now rare except Chiefly Dial, in the sense of "extremely"; as, so mortal cold. - n. A being subject to death; a human being; mortality."
As we can see "destined to die" and "mortal sin" are exactly what our Lord is indicating in today's Gospel. Not only will man's body pass away and, as we were reminded on Ash Wednesday, return to dust, but his soul would physically die in the state of mortal sin and lose forever the reward of heavenly bliss. This applies to every person today even though the term "mortal sin" is hardly mentioned anymore except in Traditional Catholic teaching. Why do you think that is? Because man has rejected Christ's warning that he will die in his sins; and yet We saw this in the Old Testament where the Jews turned away from God one too many times. While God is all merciful, He is also all just. Let us hear what the holy Dom Gueranger says for Monday in the Second Week of Lent in Volume 5 for Lent of The Liturgical Year:
"But what are the Israelites now? What has been their history for the last eighteen hundred years? The words of Daniel's lamentation [in today's Epistle] but faintly represent the sad reality of their present long chastisement. God's anger lies heavily on Jerusalem; the every ruins of the temple have perished; the children of Israel are dispersed over the whole earth, a reproach to all nations. A curse hangs over this people; like Cain, it is a wanderer and a fugitive; and God watches over it, that it become not extinct. The rationalist is at a loss how to explain the problem: whereas the Christian sees it in the punishment of the greatest of crimes. But what is the explanation of this phenomenon? The light shone in the darkness; and the darkness did not comprehend it! (St. John 1: 5). If the darkness had received the light, it would not be darkness now; but it was not so; Israel, therefore, deserved to be abandoned. Several of its children did, indeed, acknowledge the Messias, and they became children of the light; nay, it is through them that the light was made known to the whole world. When will the rest of Israel open its eyes?"
When indeed? Instead of broadcasting this message today, the conciliar church seeks to muzzle the message and listen to the same type of scribes and pharisees who rejected Christ 2000 years ago. The whole formation of the modern state of Israel is a sham for it is not and cannot be the rebuilding of Jerusalem or true ancestors of the chosen people and the evangelicals' push to restore Israel and to build a new temple in Jerusalem is destined for ruin. If they truly discern Sacred Scripture they would understand this and yet, because they do not have the grace of the Holy Ghost - contrary to what the modernist 'popes' have said - and though the vast majority do not yet realize it, they are all contributing agents for the devil who hates the New Jerusalem - the Roman Catholic Church and has done all he can to undermine and destroy it. While that seems so plausible and possible today when the True Church is in eclipse, we have Christ's promise to Peter in Matthew 16: 18, "And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" and Matthew 28: 20, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world."
There again is proof and that is why Lent is so important for us to die to self so that we can better be assured that we won't die in our sins. If we do not observe all things that Christ has commanded and taught, then we could be listed with those who will die in their sins. Death is so final, but mortal sin is the consummate dead-end!
