Though these mandates were largely authored by Archbishop Quinn and rubberstamped by many other liberal prelates, there are a few good, conservative American bishops who will have none of this nonsense. One such man is Archbishop Charles Chaput. This young Capuchin archbishop of Native American descent and formerly head of the Rapid City Diocese in South Dakota has recently been appointed Archbishop for the archdiocese of Denver succeeding the equally conservative Archbishop J. Francis Stafford who was installed by the Holy Father in November as president of the Pontifical Council on the Laity in Rome. Chaput and Stafford were two of the leaders of the conservative element and a necessary thorn in the side of the liberal faction of American bishops throughout many of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. They served as watchdogs over what some of the conference committees would propose. It is no secret that Archbishop Stafford, upon his new appointment, handpicked Chaput, now the country's youngest archbishop, with the Pope's blessings. Fortunately the Holy Father is aware of the liberal leanings of many of his bishops in America and is doing everything he can to supplant them with prelates who are loyal to the Vicar of Christ and ALL the teachings of Holy Mother Church. Like Stafford, Chaput has no time for the humanistic and proportionalistic group "we are church" or any other groups of that ilk as he points out, "Some of the changes [these groups want] concern faith and morals. The Church shouldn't be used by those who agitate against it." And he is absolutely right! Yet these groups continue to hammer away at the roots of morality in order to conform to today's mores; mores that have made homosexuality acceptable, abortion legal, contraception the norm, and free sex something "everyone does." That was the same thinking of the vast majority in Ninevah, Sodom and Gomorrah and that ilk and what did God do? Right! Do we have any doubts the Father will exact His Justice on a world that Our Lord and His Blessed Mother Mary have affirmed to countless visionaries is "worse than the times of Sodom and Gomorrah"? This latest assault from supposedly within our own ranks only confirms how conformity to the ways of the world, the flesh, and the devil have taken such a hold today.
In a breakdown of the vices this group recommends "backing off" of, the first listed is contraception. Man and woman were created by the Father for the purpose of procreation. This is the essence of the Sacrament of Matrimony and anything that hinders the opportunity for offspring cries out as an outrage against God's plan. This was the intent and content of Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae which flatly forbid artificial contraception as contrary to the Will of God. The Pope reasserted the Church's stance on this and offered the "rhythm method" as the only approved means of contraception short of abstinence from sex. Yet the world and, unfortunately, the majority of Catholics rejected and ignored his wisdom. In both John Paul II's encyclicals Veritatis Splendor on August 6, 1993 and Evangelium Vitae - The Gospel of Life on the occasion of the feast of the Annunciation on March 25, 1995 our supreme pontiff reaffirmed the Church's position on contraception and moral theology. The Holy Father points out in the former encyclical in Chapter Two, the passage from Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world" reaffirmed by Jesus' words in John 8: 32 "You will know the truth and the truth will make you free." Setting us free is not by following the recommendations of groups who have decided to discard the Word and the wise counsel of Christ's Vicar on earth as the former explains in paragraph 102, "Man's history of sin begins when he no longer acknowledges the Lord as his Creator and himself wishes to be the one who determines, with complete independence, what is good and what is evil." He goes on to warn us in paragraph 105, "All people must take great care not to allow themselves to be tainted by the attitude of the Pharisee, which would seek to eliminate awareness of one's own limits and of one's own sin. In our day this attitude is expressed particularly in the attempt to adapt the moral norm to one's own capacities and personal interests, and even in the rejection of the very idea of a norm." That is exactly what Quinn and groups like his and others are attempting to do!
The second listed vice Quinn's group advocates relaxing is "homosexual acts." Pardon this editor, but they've got to be crazy! Wasn't this one of the main reasons Sodom was destroyed? Doesn't the word "sodomny" which basically means homosexual acts, come from the vile and debase customs of that city? It was the Apostle Saint Paul who admonished the people in Romans 1: 27, "and in like manner the men also having abandoned the natural use of the woman, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men doing shameless things and receiving in themselves the fitting recompense of their perversity." Perversity. That is the word Paul uses to describe homosexuality, something definitely against the Will of God. The word "homosexual" per se is not in the bible and, because of it, many of this perverse persuasion claim it is okay. How wrong they are! The Church has always stood strong against this immoral and unnatural practice but today, when many men have permeated the ranks of the priesthood in a satanic plot to weaken Holy Mother Church, those who propose this agenda suggest we "look the other way." It's interesting to note that the author of this mandate to ease up on homosexual acts is Archbishop Quinn, the same man who was ordained in the Diocese of San Diego, a diocese which for decades (until Bishop Robert Brom became the new Bishop in 1990) was the seat of an alarming number of homosexual-oriented clergy. This is not heresay, but rather backed up from personal encounters by this author as well as documented by various experts including a leading Dominican who blew the whistle on what was truly going on in the diocese and in the seminaries. He claimed 75% of the clergy were gay! That is not only alarming but sadly true. He also was involved in many liberal activities as archbishop of the San Francisco diocese including sympathy towards the homosexual priests of that dioces and appointing a known homosexual who was also former Jesuit priest to officially head up the AIDS activities for the diocese. If the archbishop, who was made a bishop at the early age of 38, had been righteously appalled at the growing number of gay clergy he would have fought to eradicate the problem through Catholic counseling programs and have fallen in line with Rome's moral objectives. Rather he has chosen to follow his own path, perpetuating the idea of "giving homosexuals their space" by proposing such outlandish mandates. Who is he trying to protect?
Lay minister Robert Waldrop who will enter the seminary for the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in May offers some insight into the inherent problems with homosexuality. Having worked as a counselor in an outreach ministry to homosexual prostitutes, he writes: "People who argue for full and complete acceptance of homosexuality are often deliberately blind to the darker side of the issue. Homosexual activists also do not like to talk about these things, and certainly, it would be unfair and uncharitable to suggest that all homosexuals, or perhaps even most homosexuals, are into the 'darker' side. But nevertheless, these issues exist. I have seen them too many times and simply cannot deny the objective reality of these happenings." Robert cites sexual violence such as sadism and masochism. He also asserts that one of the biggest problems is homosexual prostitution in the U.S. which both liberals and the gay community choose to ignore. He points out that these are the victims who are caught up in a vortex of drugs, glitter and broken dreams. Most of these young men come from broken homes and are extremely poor. They are vulnerable to the pimps who paint a pleasure palace in their misguided minds. As these young male prostitutes grow older their services are not as much in demand and they become the dregs of society, rebuked by both the gay and straight communities. Is it any wonder most of them die before reaching middle age of HIV positive diseases? Robert has been a Saint Francis to so many of these men as he stated to this author, "Even though I hate sin, I have a very deep and abiding love for the sinners - and that includes the crack addicts and drag queens and prostitutes. I don't know why God has laid this on me. I have often suggested that God find someone else, but I keep bumping into them and trying to share God's love with them. While being very clear about what the call of the Church is in these matters," he asks all to "please temper your remarks so that the Love of Christ shines forth in all of its splendor and holiness." What this world needs are more men like Robert Waldrop who heeds and fulfills Saint James' final words in his Epistle, chapter 5: 19 - "if any one of you strays from the truth and somone brings him back, he ought to know that he who causes a sinner to be brought back from his misguided way, will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins."
In a recent article by Archbishop Dionigi Tettamanzi of Genoa in L'Osservatore Romano he wrote "The Catholic Church does not have a separate set of criteria for judging the morality of heterosexual and homosexual activity." He also affirmed that "Adultery, for example, is no less sinful than a homosexual relationship." They are both sins and punishable by God, but the sinners can be forgiven as the archbishop reminds us when he said, "The Catholic Church is showing its care for the whole person when it refuses to consider the person purely as a 'heterosexual' or a 'homosexual' and underlines the fact that every person has a fundamental identity: being a creature and, by grace, a child of God and heir of eternal life. Whether heterosexual or homosesual, all people are tempted by sin and all people are drawn to hope and to goodness. Homosexuals persons, like other Christians, are called to chastity," he concluded in referring to the 1986 documents from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He warned, however, that the Church would not be drawn into the debate of the homosexual culture, "More broadly, we find ourselves in the context of the so-called 'gay culture' which adopts a homosexual 'lifestyle' and tries to get it accepted by society and by civil laws as fully legitimate." He concluded by saying that "the Church is called to be 'courageously prophetic: in fact, it is called along with all people of good will to denounce the very serious personal and social risks associated with the acceptance of such a culture."
The final point on the list is "other sexual matters" which covers a plethora of sins which the liberals choose to overlook such as abortion, premarital sex and illicit sex in our entertainment media. They have acquiesced to the old axiom, "if you can't beat them join them." Sorry, but if that's the case it's going to be pretty crowded in hell! There is no justification whatsoever to justify these sins which are all against God's law. There is no gray area. Abortion is against the Fifth Commandment "Thou shalt not kill." Premarital sex and any kind of reference to sex other than the sacred act for which God intended between husband and wife alone violates the Sixth and Ninth Commandments. Christ admonishes all to hate the sin, but love the sinner and He reminds us in His parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18, Luke 15 and the prodigal son in Luke 15 of His Mercy and Love. Jesus says in John 10:10, "I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly." That abundance can only be achieved if we follow God's Laws and the Church He established on earth. Those who would choose otherwise, especially those who support the "Culture of death" as John Paul II has termed these sins, will be in for a rude awakening at the Last Judgment for God is equally Just.
The Holy Father put it succinctly in paragaph 112 of Veritatis Splendor, "The moral theologian must therefore exercise careful discernment in the context of today's prevalently scientific and technical culture, exposed as it is to the dangers of relativism, pragmatism and positivism. From the theological viewpoint, moral principles are not dependent upon the historical moment in which they are discovered. Moreover, the fact that some believers act without following the teachings of the Magisterium, or erroneously consider as morally correct a kind of behavior declared by their Pastor as contrary to the law of God, cannot be a valid argument for rejecting the truth of the moral norms taught by the Church." Well put; the Holy Father has spoken; we believe it; that settles it! End of discussion!
In the next installment we will discuss the fourth mandate forth by the radicals that Holy Mother Church relax the restrictions of divorce and recognize remarriages not originally sanctioned by the Church.
